Lia backed away, her eyes downcast. I took a careful step towards her.
“Lia, look at me,” I said softly, placing a finger under her chin and tipping it up.
Her eyes were glassy with tears.
“What is it?” I asked, gliding my thumb below her lower lip.
“I’m scared, Zane,” she said, sniffing softly.
My brows furrowed. “Of me?”
She nodded.
“Don’t be, my love,” I said in the gentlest of tones I could muster. “You have no reason to be afraid of me.”
“Not just you,” she replied, taking a deep breath. “You, Blake, the Hounds. What all of this means for me… I am not a part of your world, Zane. I’m just a human. I’m completely ordinary.”
She was not ordinary. Nothing about her was.
“Come here.” There was a barrel in the corner of the closet, and I turned it upside down, leading her to it. She sat down on it, and I knelt on the ground before her, taking her hands in mine. “I know it’s all very overwhelming for you, Lia. I understand what you mean-
“No you don’t,” she said, cutting me off. A tear escaped her eye, and I quickly reached out and wiped it away. “You had always known that there is a person out there who is created for you. You had been keeping an eye out for her ever since you found out. You knew exactly what would happen when you’d turn sixteen. You just didn’t expect that it would be me. Imagine if you were human, away from this world. Imagine if you did not know that people like you exist. And then all of a sudden, you turn sixteen, your bully starts showing up to your bedroom, acting all romantic and loving. You find out that he can turn into an animal, and if you don’t end up with him, if you dare to fall in love with someone else, he would eat him.”
“We don’t eat-“
“Yes, I know. Let me rephrase that to exactly what Sheila said. You’d rip his head off.”
Goddess. Why did Sheila have to do this?
“He gets you used to him, he stays close by no matter how many times you tell him to stay away. And then one day, he simply disappears. He stops coming to school, to your house, he stops texting or calling you for a whole week. You keep staring at your phone, and looking out the window, wondering where he went, worrying for his safety, worrying about the stupid message you’d sent to a random, fake Facebook group, and thinking you got him into trouble. And then he shows up, with a girl on his arm, acting like nothing happened, and he got a girlfriend.” She broke into sobs, tears spilling from her eyes freely.
Facebook group… Did she know about The Order? Was she the one who had led them to us?
“What Facebook group, Lia?” I asked, trying to keep my tone calm.
She glanced at me, wiping away more of her tears. “Something called The Order. It said they hunt werewolves. It’s probably a fake as you were just busy with your new girlfriend.”
I pursed my lips, running a hand through my hair.
Lia frowned. “What?”
“They’re not fake,” I replied.
Her face fell. “What?”
“They’re not fake, Lia, The Order. They do hunt us. It’s a real thing. They have killed a lot of werewolves around the world. Killed, kidnapped, tortured.”
She covered her mouth with her hands, her eyes wide.
-ZANE’S POV-
That was exactly what I had been busy with the last week. We found out that The Order has showed up in town. We had been searching for them, to get to them before they would get to us. But we couldn’t find them. I thought the news was fake, but now that Lia mentioned what she did, it meant it was real. They actually were here.
“I’m so sorry,” she cried, “I didn’t know they’d be real, Zane. I just… Sheila threatened me, and I thought-I just-“
“Hey, hey,” I took her hands in mine again, shaking my head, “it’s okay. Relax. I’m sure they’re not gonna come here due to a message from a sixteen year old girl.”
“But what if they do?” she cried. “What if they get to you Zane? What if they hurt you?”
I smiled at her, and leaned in. “What if they hurt me?”
“I’d never be able to forgive myself,” she whispered. “I’d-I-I don’t know what I’d do.”
“Why is that?” I smirked. “I thought you wanted to get rid of me.”
“Not like this,” she said quickly, “I just.. I don’t want to get rid of you, Zane. I just don’t know what to do.”
My smile widened further.
At least she admitted to it. She didn’t want me gone.
“Don’t worry,” I reassured, “I’m not going anywhere. I was just busy last week, Lia.”
“You said you did it to get on my nerves,” she scowled.
“That too,” I lied. I didn’t want her to worry that she’d gotten me into trouble. “But I promise it won’t happen again.”
She sniffed and looked away from me.
“Look at me,” I said again, cupping her face in my hands. “I love you, Lia Snow. You’re my soulmate. I’m not going anywhere, and I’m not gonna let anyone hurt anyone. Okay? Not you, not me, not my friends, and not even Blake. So don’t worry. You have to deal with me for the rest of your life, whether you like it or not. And I do not have a new girlfriend.”
I had only brought Meredith to school so Lia would think that was why I was busy. Also because I wanted to see if she’d feel jealous. After all, I’d spent a week away and she hadn’t even sent me a single text.
“Then who was that?” she asked.
“Her name is Meredith. You didn’t send me a single text, so my trick failed. I thought I might get you jealous by bringing a girl to school. See, it worked.”
“No it didn’t,” she said, glaring at me.
I laughed. “Yeah, right. You actually cried, Lia. I’m sorry about that. But you have to accept that it worked.”
“It did not.” She rolled her eyes.
I narrowed my eyes playfully, casually taking hold of her wrists. “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” she replied, not even noticing it as I held onto both her hands with only one of mine.
“Admit to the truth, Lia Snow, or face the consequences,” I said in a dangerous tone.
She stared at me. “What consequences?
“This.” I poked her side, making her squeal.
“Hey! Let go of me!”
I poked her again, and then a few more times, until she was giggling.
“Accept it,” I warned.
“Alright, fine!” she said, grinning from ear to ear. “You’re such a jerk. Yes, I got jealous.”
“Good girl,” I said, letting go of her wrists.
She slapped my shoulder as soon as I did. “Idiot.”
“At least you smiled.” I winked.
She rolled her eyes, unable to stop grinning. “We should get to class.”
“I think I’m good. I like it in here. It’s a secluded, crammed up space. I have you on a barrel in the corner, with no place to escape. You’re wet, I’m wet, I think I’ll stay.”
Her eyes widened, face flushing.
“I’m not wet,” she stated.
I frowned. I reached towards her face, and she tried to move away, but I managed to trace my fingers over her forehead. “You are wet. See, you’re sweating.”
Her mouth parted in realisation. “Oh. Yeah.”
“What did you think I meant?” I whispered. “Goddess, Lia, get your mind out the gutter.”
“You did that on purpose!” she scolded, slapping my arm again.
I laughed. “Okay, easy there, tiger. I thought you were afraid of me.”
She shrugged. “You’re the one who said I shouldn’t be.”
“Right, and you’re so obedient, aren’t you?”
“I am. I am a good girl. I listen to everyone.”
“Well, then, kiss me. Obey me, Lia. Kiss me.” I leaned in.
“Get your face away from me.” She pushed me back by the face, standing up from the barrel.
I laughed, standing up as well. “You good now?” I asked, tucking her hair behind her ear.
