“Lia, love, when you told Sheila you’re gonna date someone else, I knew you were bluffing. But being a werewolf, I feel everything everything you feel a hundred times more. Can you imagine how it made me feel now?”
It took everything within me to not snap at him. He thought he could excuse what he did to me by saying all this.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you just now. I only meant to tick you off. To make you feel the bond the way I do every second of the day. Sometimes, distance does it. I gave you a week, but you turned out stronger than I anticipated. I thought you’d call me, message me, anything. But you didn’t. I grew agitated.”
“So you came back with a girl?” I asked, not able to hold back anymore.
“Yes. Because I disappeared for a reaction, and yet you didn’t give me any. Not even a message, Lia.”
I stood up, seething with anger, and opened the door, ready to give him a piece of my mind.
But before I could utter a single word, Zane pushed me back and joined me inside, slamming the door shut again. He locked it, before turning to me.
I opened my mouth to yell at him, but he stepped closer, pushing me against the wall. My voice caught in my throat.
“Before you say a word,” he said softly, his blue eyes shining even in the dark, “I’d like to say that I’m sorry.”
I narrowed my eyes. “You’re-“
“Shh.” He pressed a finger to my lips, and the second our skins. made contact, tingles erupted throughout my body, and warmth seeped into my insides. “Always so angry. Always in a hurry. Don’t you ever rest, Lia?”
“Not ever since you and Blake told me what you are,” I replied, my lips moving against his finger.
Zane smiled. “I see, my finger cannot silence you.”
“No, it cannot.”
“No problem.” He then pressed his palm over my lips, making me glare at him. “Better?” he asked.
“No, not one bit!” I said in a muffled, uncomprehensive ramble.
“Hm,” he lowered his hand from my lips, a shadow crossing his features. He placed his hand on the wall, near my head, and leaned in until our noses were barely apart. “Maybe if I cover your lips with mine, that will finally silence you.”
My heart thumped in my chest, breath catching once more.
But I could not show weakness. I could not show him how affected I was.
“You wouldn’t dare,” I whispered, glaring at him.
Zane smirked, mischief glinting in his eye. “Don’t challenge an Alpha, Lia. It always ends in submission.” He started to lean in slowly, and I sucked in a breath, turning my face away just before our lips would touch.
His mouth made contact with my cheek instead, and even that sent my body into a wild frenzy. My heart threatened to beat its way out of my chest, and my stomach buzzed with butterflies.
Zane chuckled, pulling away.
I glanced at him again, staring at him accusingly. “You… you. tried to steal my first kiss.”
“I gave you enough time to dodge it, and you did.”
“And if I hadn’t?”
“Then that would be completely your fault, not mine.”
“You didn’t give me enough time,” I replied.
“You still managed. I don’t see the problem.”
“You tried to force me into a kiss, Zane. That is the problem. You knew I didn’t want it.”
“That is not how I’d force you, Lia. If I wanted to force kiss you, it’d look like this.” In a swift move, he grabbed both my wrists and pinned them above my head with one of his hands, and with the other, he grabbed a hold of my hair, tugging it down. I gasped, my eyes wide, mouth parting in shock. Zane leaned in, and I squeezed my eyes shut, struggling against his hold. I felt his breath on my lips, and curled my toes, my entire body bracing itself. His scent flooded my nose, his presence, his aura washing over me. My stomach twisted in desperate agony, my body urging me to inch forward and let him have his way.
But my mind screamed at me to stay put. To move away.
“It is indeed very easy for me to force you,” Zane whispered. His breath moved from my lips to my cheek, and then to my ear. He buried his face in my hair, beside my neck. “But what is the point of that? You’re my mate, Lia. You are literally created for me. What is the point of snatching someone who literally belongs to you anyway?”
A shiver crept through me.
“I… I am not a possession, Zane. I d muttered. not belong to you,” I
“You’re human, a person, I know. But you’re still mine. Even I do not have a say in that.”
I squirmed again, trying to get my wrists free from his hold. This… position made me feel very exposed. I wanted to get out of it. I needed to get out of this crammed up space.
“Stop struggling, love,” he said softly. “You’ll only hurt yourself. Stop struggling against my hold, and our bond. If you just relax, and accept your destiny, everything will become so much more exciting for you.”
I struggled harder, his words scaring me.
Zane chuckled. “You know that I won’t do anything. Yet still, you act like a damsel in distress.”
“I am a damsel in distress,” I snapped, struggling even harder. “I am being harassed here.”
He clicked his tongue. “So dramatic, Lia.”
“Zane…”
“My love…”
I sighed. “Alright, here’s the deal. You let me go this instant, or I will scream. I will scream for help so loud everyone will think you were actually trying to force yourself onto me. Best of luck explaining that to the teachers.”
“Hm,” he let go of my hair, and then took my chin. “Weren’t you locked in a locker a few days ago, and no one but I came to help?”
Now an idea struck me. “Actually, no. It wasn’t just you. Blake! Help me-“
Zane covered my mouth again, glaring at me. “Shh. Don’t call for him,” he scolded.
I continued screaming against his hand.
“Alright, fine,” he said, letting go of me and stepping away, raising his hands in surrender. “Stop screaming.”
I panted, catching my breath. “Let me go, Zane,” I whispered, glaring at him.
He stared at me a moment. “Okay. On one condition.”
“You’re not in any position to make demands.”
Zane’s face hardened, and he raised a brow. When I didn’t react at all, his eyes turned black.
I sucked in a breath, my face falling.
Maybe it was me who wasn’t in the position to make demands.
“What condition?” I asked, barely managing to keep my voice steady.
His eyes returned to their gentle blue shade. “Tell me honestly, how many times did you think about me in the last week? And don’t lie-I’ll know.”
Ah, just the perfect question to get me into trouble.
-ZANE’S POV-
I did not enjoy scaring her. But sometimes, she left me no other option. It pained me to see her frightened expression, but how else was I supposed to convince her to do what I needed her to do? Lia Snow was the most stubborn girl I’d ever met.
“What condition?” she asked, a slight tremor to her voice.
I wanted to step forward and pull her into my arms, to reassure her that she was safe. That no matter what happened, no matter what she did, I could never hurt her.
“Tell me honestly, how many times did you think about me in the last week? And don’t lie-I’ll know.”
Her heart raced.
Bingo.
I’d asked the perfect question.
She looked away from me, a clear sign that the question had caught her off guard. Now she was scrambling for an answer, or a way to lie to me without making it obvious.
“Once,” she then said, “or twice maybe.”
I smiled. “And for how long did those last?”
Now she glanced at me in utter shock.
I stifled a laugh.
She thought she did something there. But in all honesty, I would give the same response if she asked me the same question. It thought about her once and then did not stop.
“I am done here, Zane. I have to get to class.” She tried to leave, but I moved to block her way. She tried from the other side, but I moved with her, placing my hand on the wall.
