But Marilyn’s shamelessness still managed to push her limits again and again.

Yes, her mother-in-law had given her a pair of emerald bangles, but they were the Xander family’s heirloom, meant one day for Millie. How could she hand them over to a heartless girl like Marilyn?

She gave her no room for illusion, answering flatly, “I will never give you those bangles. If you have nothing else to say, you should leave.”

“Auntie!”

Marilyn stamped her foot in rage.

She had thought that throwing around the Luke family’s name would make Holly and Greg bow and scrape, eager to curry favor. She never imagined they would still refuse, not giving her so much as a thread.

The more she thought about it, the angrier she grew, convinced they didn’t know what was good for them.

Lifting her chin defiantly, she snapped, “I’m marrying the second son of the wealthiest family!”

Holly let out a cold laugh. “Whether you marry the second son or the third son makes no difference to me. Get out!”

Even after she brandished the Luke family name again, Holly still would Marilyn’s face twisted darker, her temper burning away the last of her reason. nd.

“You won’t give me the bangles-do you plan on giving them to that slut Adeline instead? Auntie, I’m your real niece, your blood. How can you turn your back on your own family?”

Slap!

Holly hadn’t expected Marilyn to call Adeline a slut right to her face. Her chest heayed with fury, and she raised her hand, striking Marilyn hard across the cheek.

“Adeline is not a slut-she is my daughter! Marilyn, if you ever come here again and act insane, I’ll call the police! Get out!”

“Bad person!”

Millie, who always defended Adeline, puffed up her cheeks in outrage. She rushed forward and shoved Marilyn hard.

“You haven’t brushed your teeth in three years, have you? How can your mouth stink this much? You talk bad about my sister-I hate you!”

“Millie!”

Marilyn’s rage twisted her features further. She was the one with blood ties to Millie, not Adeline. Seeing even Millie defend Adeline drove her nearly mad.

Grinding her teeth, she spat bitterly, “You treat some useless outsider like treasure. Are you all insane? Adeline is nothing but trash-what can she ever give you? I’m marrying into the Luke family as the future mistress. With me, you’ll have endless wealth and glory. What can Adeline give you? Shame, that’s all! Do you even know she secretly likes Victor? But too bad for her-Victor only wants me. He doesn’t even look at her. If you think she’ll marry into a powerful family and bring you honor, forget it-it’ll never happen!”

“Get out!”

Greg’s face hardened completely at Marilyn’s words, fury blazing in his eyes.

“Liking someone isn’t shameful. But trampling on another person’s dignity and exposing their private feelings-that’s the most shameless thing of all. Get out!”

Millie declared, hands on her hips, her voice fierce. “My sister is not an outsider! She’s my family, the pride of us all! Bad person, get out of my house, or I’ll call the police right now!”

With that, she shoved Marilyn again, not holding back.

Marilyn’s teeth ground together in hatred.

Failing to get the bangles left her bitter with frustration.

But Holly was too stubborn, too determined not to give them up. Against the whole family, Marilyn could gain no ground.

“You’ll regret treating me like this!” she hissed through clenched teeth before storming out on her heels.

Adeline stood frozen where she was.

She knew her parents and Millie treated her well.

But she never expected that her mother would strike her own niece for her sake.

After being with Victor, Adeline had longed to draw closer to him, only to learn he planned to marry Marilyn. The news broke her heart.

And yet, in that moment, she also felt incredibly lucky.

Even if her secret love was destined to remain hers alone, she still had a family who loved her, and she could still be friends with Lily. That, she thought, made her the happiest person in the world.

“Adeline, do you really like Victor?” Holly asked, holding her hand with concern.

Greg and Millie also looked at her with worried eyes.

Her family was her greatest support. In front of them, she didn’t feel the need to hide her careful little secret.

She nodded lightly. “I’ve had a crush on him for many years. But he’s getting married soon. I won’t disturb them.”

Greg and Holly trusted their daughter’s character. They knew she would never play the role of a mistress.

They only worried that Marilyn had come deliberately to provoke her and cause her pain.

So both of them spoke over one another, trying to comfort her. “Loving someone who doesn’t return your feelings is perfectly normal. Our Adeline is so wonderful-she’ll definitely meet someone better!”

“That’s right. And even if you never want to marry, your mom and dad can take care of you for a lifetime!”

Millie puffed out her chest proudly. “I’ve got pocket money too! I can take care of you. Tomorrow I’ll treat you to a feast!”

In the warmth of her family’s comfort, the last bit of bitterness in Adeline’s heart melted away, replaced by a sunshine-like glow of happiness.

This world, she thought, really is beautiful…

Earlier, the doctor had instructed Lily to come in for a prenatal exam once she reached forty days.

That morning, James personally drove her to the hospital.

The results confirmed it: Lily was carrying twins.

When she received the report, her eyes sparkled with joy, as bright as rippling spring water, radiant beyond compare.

She was going to have two little family members at once. How wonderful!

And she couldn’t help but wonder-how silly with joy would James be when he heard?

“Lily, what did the results say?”

Seeing her with the report, James hurried toward her, his eyes betraying the tension he couldn’t hide.

Meeting his gaze, so filled with worry and care, Lily’s smile bloomed even brighter.

“James, you’re going to be the father of two babies!”

“What? Two babies?”

James was usually quick-witted, but this time he stood frozen, dumbstruck, as if unable to process what she’d said.

The doctor had mentioned before that she might be carrying twins.

But hearing it confirmed-that she was indeed carrying two children-still left him stunned with joy.

That joy was quickly followed by a wave of dread and aching worry.

He knew how hard pregnancy was, how it dragged a woman through the valley of life and death.

Carrying one child was exhausting enough. But two? How could she bear the burden?

It was his fault. How could he have let her conceive twins?

“Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t you like our babies?” Lily teased, putting on a mock scowl when he didn’t answer right away.

Earlier, the doctor had instructed Lily to come in for a prenatal exam once she reached forty days.

That morning, James personally drove her to the hospital.

The results confirmed it: Lily was carrying twins.
