The three of them remained silent, so I went back, thinking about the new information I’d just learnt. First of all, Blake was a selfish jerk. Secondly, werewolves had a big weakness that The Hounds didn’t want humans finding out about. And third, Zane and Blake had their own contest going on about who would win me over, with rules and all.

At this point, I really didn’t know why I deserved to be caught in the middle of all this.

Blake kept away from me for the rest of the day, clearly too embarrassed and ashamed to come up to me.

Zane maintained a distance as well, until the last period was over and I was leaving for home.

“Lia,” he called out to me as I exited the school premises.

I stopped, turning towards him.

“You need a ride home?” he asked.

“So you can abduct me again?”

“No. I could abduct you from your house like last time.”

I rolled my eyes. “I don’t need a ride home. Thanks for asking.”

I started to walk away again, but he fell into step with me.

“Go away, Zane. I’m gonna walk home. It helps me clear my head,” I said.

“So? I’m not stopping you from walking. I’m just walking on this road because I want to. It’s free and it doesn’t belong to anyone, does it?”

I took a deep breath, and shook my head.

Now that he was here, I decided to ask him a few questions.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Anything,” he said at once.

“Why were you so secretive about everything? When did you think I’d be ‘ready’ to find out the truth?” I airquoted.

Zane narrowed his eyes, thinking. “Honestly, I’m not sure. I just knew that now wasn’t the right time. Maybe once both Blake and I had won over your trust, once you would have seen that even The Hounds are no danger to you anymore, you would feel safer after finding out the truth than you do now.”

Yeah, that made some sense.

I nodded. “And why didn’t you tell me about Blake that night? When you came to my house? Wouldn’t doing that help your chances with me? The chances of me choosing you and not him?”

“No,” he replied. “It wouldn’t.”

I frowned. “Why not?”

“Because, Lia, you won’t choose either of us if you hate werewolves. If you realised how… selfish we can be when it comes to our mates, that would scare you away. And I didn’t want to scare you.”

“Then why did you keep showing up to my bedroom uninvited? You didn’t think that would scare me?” I argued.

Zane’s lips curled into a smirk. “Let’s skip that question.”

“Why? Because the answer is embarrassing? Because you cannot control your desire of being close to me?” I mocked.

He chuckled. “I mean yeah, that’s there. But I wouldn’t do it if I thought it would terrify you.”

“So you didn’t think showing up to my bedroom in the middle of the night could scare me. You didn’t consider that placing your claw against my neck could scare me,” I said sarcastically.

Zane simply laughed. “Yeah, I didn’t think so. And it didn’t.”

“You’re crazy,” I stated.

“I’m not. I know what I’m doing, Lia.”

“No, you don’t. I’m sorry but you sound like an idiot right now.”

Zane paused by a tree, raising a brow. For some reason, I stopped as well.

“What?” I asked.

“You want me to prove it to you?”

“Prove what?”

“How I knew you wouldn’t be scared shitless?”

I blinked at him, then shrugged. “Go ahead.”

In a swift move, Zane leaned forward and grabbed my wrist, pulling me to his chest. I gasped as he then pressed me against the tree, holding my wrists on either side of me. Tingles erupted throughout my body, and I squirmed to get free of his hold, but failed. Zane leaned in, until his face was inches away from mine.

“What-what are you doing?” I whispered, my heart hammering in my chest. eyes

“Do you think I do not know when you’re excited and when you’re scared, Lia? I can smell it on you,” he whispered, his a darker shade of blue than I remembered, his voice deeper than usual.

My mouth fell open, heat spreading through me. “You… that’s-that’s not possible. How could you smell that?” I asked.

Zane smiled. “Tell me I’m wrong.”

I swallowed, looking away.

“Hence proved,” Zane let go of me, and stepped away, I released a breath, staring at him, still with my back jammed to the wall. “You get excited when I come close to you. The more intense and forbidden the situation is, the more drawn you feel to me. Am I wrong? Or should I just tell you how you smell?”

I opened my mouth to respond, then stopped. I didn’t know what to say.

Zane stepped closer to me again, making me shiver. He leaned in, bringing his nose near my neck. I held my breath, clenching my fists. “Right now, Lia,” he whispered, his breath tickling my skin. “You smell like your perfume.”

-LIA’S POV-

I frowned.

Zane glanced at my face, and then started laughing, pulling away from me. “I can’t smell it if you’re excited, my love,” he said, a look of amused pity on his face.

My jaw ticked. “You’re a big fat liar.”

He only laughed harder. “I’m so sorry. But I proved my point anyway. I know you, Lia. I understand girls like you very well. The quiet, shy ones, who have dark, wild fantasies. The more forbidden and wrong it feels, the more you want it. You’re such a good girl, with a scholarship. Studying hard to make your parents proud. Always the goody-two-shoes, always the kind hearted. The one who tries to play safe. But secretly, you crave danger, love, as long as it doesn’t actually harm you or disrupt anything in your life. As long as it doesn’t disrupt your routine.” you think

“And you your actions didn’t disrupt my routine?” I narrowed my eyes.

“Not any more than Blake did. Him showing up already changed everything for you. So I thought I might as well add myself to the mix. Wasn’t I right to do that? I know a thing or two about girls.”

“Hm,” I smiled sarcastically, “of course you know about girls. After all, you’ve probably had so many of them.”

Zane grinned. “I haven’t, actually, but it’s sweet you think that way. That shows you think I’m very desirable. Lucky for you, I had been saving myself for my mate. Everything I have to offer, belongs to you and only you.”

For some reason, my heart skipped a beat.

“I don’t want it, Zane. So you can go and give it all to someone else for all I care.” I pushed away from the tree.

Zane blocked my way.

“Are you sure?” he asked. “You won’t be jealous?”

“Not at all. Because I don’t feel any sort of bond with you.”

Zane smirked. “Not even… physical?”

“Especially not that,” I snapped.

“Sure, Lia. You tell yourself that.”

“Can you get out of my way now?”

“Yeah, we’re getting late. Let’s go.”

“No, I don’t want you to walk me home,” I said.

“Like I said, free road, free street, free town.”

I released a breath, walking off. Zane accompanied me, whistling a merry tune.

“Stop that.”

“Why? You want me to do a different tune?”

“I want you to shut up.”

“I see.”
