I kept my eyes on the board, trying my hardest to listen to the teacher. She was talking about different wars, and how those affected the people who were alive in those times. I wondered if werewolves existed back then. And if they did, did they fight in the wars posing as humans? Did the government know about them, or were they completely secret? They had to have a lot of influential people on their payrolls. Or, if not on their payrolls, influential people probably too terrified to say a word.

Could you blame them?

These monsters threw out death threats like it was nothing. They threatened to break spines and necks, as if human life had such little value. And why? Just because we were weaker? We were not strong enough to fight back? The entire food chain had always been messed up, but adding them to it had just changed. the dynamics completely. Humans were supposed to be the most dangerous, but now there was a creature which was half human and half beast. One could only imagine what they were capable of.

“Are you okay?” Blake whispered, pulling me from my thoughts. I glanced at him, then looked away again, not responding. I realised my heart beat had gotten quicker just thinking about them.

“Lia,” he tried again. “Is something bothering you?”

Before I could even consider telling him, Sheila stepped into class, and took a seat towards my back. I knew why she did that. She was keeping an eye on me, since Zane wasn’t at school.

I clenched my jaw, focusing on what the teacher was saying once more.

Blake turned his head to look at Sheila, then looked at me again.

We were studying about the most major wars now, going into detail about what happened, how tragic they were, and how many people lost their lives, homes and families. I stared down at the text book in front of me, and started to flip the pages, searching for anything that would catch my eye. My gaze fell on the ‘interesting facts’ section, and my eyes widened when I read the third point:

Following the war, several soldiers exhibited signs of severe psychological distress, reporting encounters with unusual creatures. Some claimed to have seen “men walking on all fours”, while others described being watched by glowing eyes in the darkness. Historians largely attribute these accounts to wartime trauma and psychological strain, but the reports remain a curious aspect of post-war records.

“Yes,” Blake said, stealing my attention. “That is what you think it is.”

I stared at him, my mouth parted open. “Werewolves fought wars?”

“Of course,” he replied. “There have been multiple instances. where humans discovered our secret. When the officials find out, they try to kill us or capture us. Back then, werewolves were sometimes kept in cages and treated completely like animals, then used to win wars. For centuries, we have been experimented on, Lia. Been used to try and come up with cures for dangerous diseases humans catch. Even now, there are organisations out there, who capture our kind and experiment

Ster 30 – Wars on us. Not just to find cures to diseases, but for research and even fun. They cut up parts of our bodies and watch how long it takes for us to heal. They try to burn us, drown us, bury us alive, and torture us to find our weaknesses. This is why we keep our existence a secret. Back then we were scared. But now, as human weaponry has grown stronger, our bodies have adapted too. Very few things can hurt us, and if humans challenge us now, there are enough of us around the world to destroy everything humans hold dear to them. This is the one cause every pack of werewolves out there is united in.”

Oh my God… I never considered the possibility of any of this. I should’ve known. Since when have human beings been innocent, harmless creatures? We were as terrifying as them.

Had I revealed their existence in our town to an organisation like that?

“So you mean, you and Zane can fight anything, right?” I asked, needing that reassurance. I had to make sure that I hadn’t put them into some awful danger.

“Yes,” he replied. “The only weakness we still haven’t managed to improve is the ma-“

Someone slammed the table really loud, shutting him up. I glanced around to find Sheila glaring daggers at Blake.

“What is going on?” the teacher snapped, glaring at her.

“Ma’am, may I go to the washroom?”

“That’s how you ask that question?”

“I’m sorry, my stomach ached really bad,” Sheila pretended.

“Well, go.”

She stood up, the chair scraping against the floor. Then she paused, grabbed her bag, and started searching through it.

“What are you doing, Sheila? Why aren’t you going?”

Sheila smiled. “Actually, I’m gonna need Lia to go with me. I think I just got my period, and I don’t have a tampon. I will also have to take off my jumpsuit in the washroom and I need help. putting it back on. It hugs my body really well.”

The entire class snickered, boys immediately whistling and whispering amongst themselves.

“Lia, please go with her. Silence!” The teacher clapped her hands.

Grudgingly, I stood up, grabbing my bag.

Sheila stepped forward and smiled at me. “After you.”

I rolled my eyes and walked out, with Sheila following closely behind. As soon as we were outside, I turned to her with a bored look. “I assume you don’t need a tampon.”

“You’re right, I don’t.”

“What was the problem now?”

“I was,” said Blake, stepping out of the class. “She couldn’t leave alone with me. Zane wouldn’t allow it, would he?” you

“It’s a good thing she doesn’t have to do anything since I’m already here.”

I turned to find Zane approaching, his posture relaxed and composed as usual.

I let out a sigh.

Here we go again.

-LIA’S POV-

“This isn’t according to the rules, Zane,” Blake snapped at him. “We decided something together.”

Rules?

“Oh, and what you did was playing by the rules?” Zane retorted. “At least I respected the mate bond.”

“What rules are you guys talking about?” I asked.

“Nothing,” Blake said.

“I’ll tell her,” Zane smiled. “On your birthday, when he caught me inside your house and put up that whole drama of beating the shit out of me and dragging me to the forest, I fought back once we were out of your view. Then, we discussed the situation, realising that we were both mated to you.”

“We drew up some rules,” Blake interrupted, taking over. “We can’t do anything physical with you without your consent. We can’t abduct you. We can’t force you to choose us.”

“And we cannot try to limit the other from seeing you,” Zane said.

“Exactly. So by sending your Hounds after me, and having them take Lia away when we’re in a deep conversation breaks that rule.”

“What?” Sheila laughed. “Zane didn’t ask me to take her away. He just asked me to watch, to keep an eye on you. You know why, I’m sure.”

Blake’s jaw clenched, making me frown.

“Why?” I asked.

“Let it be, Lia. It doesn’t matter,” Zane said.

“I’ve already told her, Zane,” Sheila muttered. “Sorry I forgot to mention that.”

Zane gave her a look of disbelief, and Sheila took a discreet step back.

“Told me what?” I asked.

“That it was Blake who planned that werewolf attack that day. You know the one that pushed you into our world way before you were ready. He wanted to be the one to save you and expose our kind to you. But he failed his own plan and I ended up being the one to do it.”

So it was true…

Blake put me into trouble just to look like a hero.

I glanced at him, disappointment clear on my face.

“Lia, it wasn’t like that,” Blake said quickly, stepping forward to take my hands in his.

I backed away. “Stay away from me.”

“I wasn’t going to let you get hurt! You think I’d ever put you in danger?”

“That wolf was about to pounce at me, Blake. If Zane hadn’t stepped in, I would be his dinner.”

“No, you wouldn’t. Because I would step in.”

Tears pricked my vision. Not out of hurt, but out of anger. “At the right moment,” I nodded, “which could have been too late.”

“It wouldn’t be,” he sighed.

“Anyway,” Zane cleared his throat. “You got her into trouble once. I needed to be sure you wouldn’t do that again. Especially when I wouldn’t be here to protect her.”

“So then why did Sheila interrupt us? If she was just supposed to watch, why didn’t she?” Blake asked.

“Because, Blake, like an idiot, you were talking about our secrets in a classroom full of humans. You were about to reveal our greatest weakness to every person sitting close enough to hear you. And I know I heard you because I’m a werewolf, but the humans right adjacent to you would have heard you fine as well. In your efforts to grow closer to her, you’re acting stupid and putting our entire community into danger. You don’t even belong to this town, so if something goes wrong, you can simply return home. I wasn’t going to let an outsider disrupt the community we’ve maintained in complete secrecy for so long. Is that clear?”

Sheila’s eyes turned black as she spoke, and I sucked in a breath and moved away, my back hitting Zane.

“It’s okay,” he said softly, shooting Sheila a look. Her eyes returned back to normal, and she lowered her gaze.

“Sorry,” she muttered.

I swallowed, tucking the loose strands of my hair behind my ears. “I think we’re done here. I’m gonna go back to class. You guys do whatever you want.”
