I sighed. “No, it’s okay. I’ll talk to him.””Suit yourself,” she said, her voice growing distant. “Here she is, Ginger.”

A second later, I heard Liam’s voice, which was something I’d been hoping to avoid. Not that I had much of a choice if he was starting to harass people I knew at work. The fact that he even thought he had the right to enter the life I had managed to create after he and the others turned their backs on me made me furious. It had the unintended effect of distracting me from the heat, at least.”Lavinia?” The fear and concern in his voice gave me pause, and I had to steel myself against it. “Where are you? What is this about a vampire?”

Of course he had overheard that somehow. Supposedly, males were more attuned to the sound of their mate’s voice and scent, but I hadn’t been sure if the mark had gotten far enough for that. I still wasn’t.”You can’t do this,” I said, ignoring his questions since that wasn’t the reason I agreed to talk to him. “I told you in the note I sent with the check, I don’t want to talk to you.””Yeah, you made that clear enough by ignoring my calls and texts,” he said in an accusatory tone he had no right to. “I’m not cashing the damn check.””Then I’ll mail you the cash,” I countered. “As for not answering your calls, what makes you think I’d want to talk to you in person?”

I heard a growl of frustration. “I needed to make sure you’re okay. It’s the first full moon after…””After what, Liam?” I asked, even though I didn’t want to hear the answer any more than he wanted to give it. “After you left me half-marked and sent me packing along with the others?””I know you’re angry. I know you hate me, you have every right to,” he said, his voice softening to a tone of regret that pissed me off more than anything. “But I’ve been doing some research, and I think you might be in danger. I was able to find a few cases of partial marks, and there are some potential effects that can happen on a full moon.””Yeah, I figured that out already,” I said, unable to keep the bitterness out of my voice. “Thanks for the heads up, but I’ll take it from here.””Lavinia, please just listen to me. We need to talk in person. Just once, and you never have to see me again if that’s really what you want.”

I gripped the receiver a little tighter until my hand hurt. “You don’t get to make requests like that, Liam. Not anymore. And if you show up at my work again, you’d better hope Sam calls the cops on you before I can get to you.””Lavinia-!”

I hung up because if I didn’t, I was going to say even more shit I would probably regret later. Not because he didn’t deserve it, but because I didn’t want to give him the pleasure.

The soft knock at the door as soon as I hung up alerted me to the fact that I’d been a bit louder than I intended. Not that I could help myself where Liam was concerned. I’d never have imagined I would speak back to him–any male, for that matter–but living in the real world was like having scales peeled off my eyes. With that clarity came an unexpectedly heavy helping of pure, unadulterated rage.

Rage I thought I was pretty fucking entitled to.

So much of it was buzzing beneath my skin, as if the heat had simply made the anger part of itself and formed something even greater. I was a bundle of nerves and excess energy, with a confusing amount of horniness in the mix, and I felt like my skin, let alone the room, was too confining.

I took a second to collect myself before opening the door, not surprised to see Alexander standing on the other side. What I wasn’t expecting was the concern in his gaze.”Are you alright?” he asked. “I don’t mean to interrupt, but you sounded quite upset.”

His eyes darkened with hunger as they traveled over my bare shoulders, and I was still too deep in the throes of primal lust to rationalize myself out of the obvious.

He wanted me, and I wanted him.

I opened my mouth to answer, but by the time I would have spoken, there didn’t seem to be any point. Not when there were ways to express myself far better than words.

Alexander’s eyes widened in confusion when I leaned up and slipped my hands around his neck to pull him in for a searing kiss.

He froze for a split second, but then all bets were off. His lips crushed mine in return and he took a step forward until our bodies were closely pressed together. I stumbled back and he caught me with one arm wrapped around my waist, pushing the door shut with his other hand.

I broke the kiss to look up at him–and take a much-needed gulp of air–but before I could say a word, he had me up against the door, kissing me once again. Even though I’d never actually kissed anyone before, my lips parted to receive his thieving tongue like it was second nature, and no matter how little I had to compare it to, I would have bet my life no other bastard was capable of kissing like that.

My hands settled against his chest as his roved my bare shoulders the way they had in my recent fantasy. “Damn,” I muttered, looking up at him under heavy lashes. Turned out, my imagination hadn’t done him justice, after all. My body was on fire again, but there was relief in sight, offered only by his strong hands. I needed more. I needed him to keep touching me, everywhere, and pushed myself up against him shamelessly. I wished I could say it wasn’t me in the driver’s seat. I wished I could blame it on some latent nature unleashed by the heat, but the truth was, this was me, even if it was a side of me I’d never let out before.

A knowing smile crossed his lips, the white tips of sharp fangs just barely peeking out. “You know, you’re sending some mixed signals.”

I slipped my hands into his hair, letting my fingers run through it the way they’d wanted to all night. It was even softer than I’d imagined. His smug expression faltered, taking on a trancelike quality I wouldn’t have imagined I was capable of inflicting on him in return.”Fuck me,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “That clear enough?”

Surprise momentarily shined through the lust in his gaze and he hesitated, stopping his hands where they had come to rest at my hips. “I don’t want you to do something you’ll regret. If you’re in heat–“”I am,” I admitted. “But that’s just an excuse to do what I want to do anyway.”
