Hailey’s eyes lit with greedy joy. Nearly ten million-her family was set for life.
Afraid Adeline might ruin it all, she snapped, “You hear that? If you make them happy, your brother gets a luxury apartment. Mr. Evan and Mr. Rob are our benefactors. For your brother’s future, you better do as they say!”
How laughable.
For Taven’s future, her mother had sold her own daughter.
Taven’s life mattered. But Adeline’s life? Hers was disposable.
The absurdity of it all tore a broken laugh from her throat, even as her tears streamed uncontrollably.
Hailey flinched at the sound, unease flickering through her. But her fear that Adeline would displease these men-and ruin Taven’s chance at wealth-made her voice sharpen with threat.
“Stop thinking nonsense. If your brother doesn’t get that apartment because of you, your father and I will never-forgive you.”
“Enough. Get out of the way!”
Tears streaked down Adeline’s cheeks, her beauty only making Evan and Rob hungrier.
For show, they always carried wads of cash on them. Evan yanked his bag open, pulled out three fat stacks of hundred-dollar bills, and tossed them at Hailey. “Stop standing there like a lamppost and ruining our fun!”
Hailey’s eyes went red with excitement. Five, six thousand at least-her daughter really was worth something.
And if she could keep pimping her out to more rich men… the money would never end. Her precious son Taven would have villas, luxury cars, and even a wealthy bride for her son.
Hugging the cash tight, she thanked them profusely before scurrying away.
Bang!
The door slammed shut.
Evan grinned as he undid the buttons of his shirt, stalking toward Adeline. “Sweetheart, now we can begin. You smell so good, so sweet. Where should I start?”
His greasy hand reached for her chest.
“Get away from me!”
Disgust twisted her stomach. But while crumpled on the floor, she had bitten her tongue hard enough to draw blood, forcing back a measure of strength.
She slapped his hand aside, then with gritted teeth swung her palm across his face. The crack echoed.
By sheer chance, after being adopted she had studied under a renowned opera master. Years of training had made her stronger and more agile than most girls.
Though her head was still swimming, her body remembered its drills. She rolled out of the way just in time to dodge his enraged punch.
“You filthy bitch, you dared hit me? I’ll kill you!”
Raging, Evan ripped off his belt, swinging it to lash her.
The fierceness in her eyes only excited Rob more. His narrow gaze gleamed with perverse delight as he lunged to tear open her blouse.
“I told you not to touch me!”
His clammy grab made her stomach churn violently. Darkness swam in her vision, but she bit her tongue again, dragging herself back to clarity.
Her eyes locked on a solid iron clothes rack leaning nearby. With every ounce of her strength, she snatched it up and swung it into Rob’s skull.
“Fuck!”
He staggered, stars exploding in his vision. For all his talk, his body was weak from years of drink and vice. The blow nearly dropped him.
“You bitch, put that down or I’ll-“
Clang!
Adeline didn’t wait. She pivoted and cracked the rack across Evan’s head too.
He reeled, face twisted, stumbling. Rob was still dazed. She couldn’t hesitate.
Yanking the door open, she bolted.
“You whore! You dare hit me? I’ll kill you!”
Their shouts rang behind her.
Her phone had already been snatched and tossed aside. The only hope was to reach the front desk and call the police.
But her body was failing. Her head swam, her legs buckled. She knew she wouldn’t make it to the lobby.
Not before they caught her.
A door up ahead was ajar. Without thinking, she slipped inside, heart hammering.
Behind her, the two men’s curses echoed down the hall.
“Where the hell did that bitch go? When we drag her back, I’ll make her pay three days straight!”
“And me-I’ll take her ten times before the night is through!”
The filthy men’s voices drew closer, making Adeline’s heart hammer against her ribs.
Then-footsteps faded.
They must have gone to another floor.
She stayed pressed against the door, gasping for breath, too afraid to risk going out and running into them. again. Relief was just beginning to seep into her bones when a shadow lunged from the bed like a predator, knocking her flat against the door.
The room was pitch-black. The curtains were drawn tight, blocking even the neon glow outside.
She couldn’t see his face, only that he was tall-nearly 6’3″. His body radiated heat, his breath hot against her skin. Just like her, he was burning up.
“You.. let me go first…”
Her voice shook. Being pinned down by a stranger in the dark was terrifying.
And the strange heat rising inside her made her panic more. Their bodies pressed close, and she could feel the man trembling. Suppressed, restrained tremors.
He was drugged too. Struggling to fight it.
She braced for him to lose control-but instead, he let her go.
Adeline’s chest rose and fell with a sharp breath of relief. Still, her heart didn’t settle.
Those men had said the drug inside her couldn’t be cured at a hospital-that without a man’s help, her body would collapse.
She thought of her adoptive parents, who had loved her like their own flesh and blood, even after having a daughter of their own. They always said she was their family’s good-luck star, that because fate gave her a little sister, they had been blessed with one.
They always said their family would be together forever.
If she died tonight, how could her parents and little sister ever bear it?
She wanted to live.
The man in the room was James’s/younger brother, Victor.
He had been ambushed that evening at a class reunion by a desperate woman who wanted to marry rich. She had slipped him a vicious drug and tried to force herself on him. But Victor had thrown her off, gagging in disgust.
Not wanting his family to see him like that, he had fled to a hotel instead of going home. In his haze, he hadn’t even shut the door properly. That mistake led Adeline to stumble into his room.
Victor had never been interested in women. He’d never planned to marry, never planned for children. The last thing he would ever do was touch a stranger.
He stepped back now, putting distance between them, moving toward the far side of the room.
But after two steps, he froze.
She smelled… different.
