Just then, Susan walked in.
She looked a bit weary.
Elaine’s brow furrowed with concern as she asked, “Susan, are you okay?”
Susan offered a sweet smile. “I’m perfectly fine. Luckily, I made it—let’s go eat together.”
“You know, if you’re busy, there’s really no need to force yourself to come,” Elaine said gently, her concern evident in her voice. “Is everything okay at home? Don’t let what’s online get to you too much.”
Susan offered a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. What’s online won’t affect me.”
Seeing the determination in Susan’s eyes, Elaine felt a wave of relief wash over her.
She took Susan and Isabella to dinner, with Glenn trailing behind, laden with bags. With so many joyful occasions recently, smiles adorned everyone’s faces.
After the meal, they strolled together, exchanging lively chatter about their plans for the following day.
Suddenly, Susan’s phone buzzed.
“Susan.” Esteban’s voice crackled through, urgent and clipped.
“What’s wrong, Dad?” Susan inquired.
Esteban replied, “Jada has been released from the detention center.”
“Really? How did she manage to get out early?” Susan asked, a hint of surprise creeping into her tone, though she didn’t dwell on it too much.
Esteban’s voice grew taut, betraying his unease. “Where are you now? You need to come home immediately. Jada bought a nearly scrapped car as soon as she got out. She might be coming for you.”
Susan was momentarily stunned.
At that moment, her gaze fell upon a white, battered vehicle parked nearby on the roadside, its condition suggesting it was on the brink of collapse.
Through the foggy window, Susan recognized a familiar face in the driver’s seat.
The woman’s eyes were ablaze with hatred.
Jada was brimming with resentment.
She had sunk so low, becoming the target of scorn from everyone, while Susan and Isabella frolicked in their joy.
It was an injustice that twisted deep within her.
She had tracked Susan down and lay in wait outside the restaurant. As Susan finally stepped out, Jada let out a chilling laugh. If she couldn’t enjoy a good life, then she would make sure Susan didn’t either.
The engine roared to life, its thunderous growl echoing as the car barreled toward Susan.
Lost in her phone conversation, Susan had ventured ahead, with Isabella and her parents trailing behind her.
In that fleeting moment, Susan felt a wave of relief wash over her, grateful that she hadn’t dragged Isabella into this mess.
“Susan!” Isabella shouted. She caught sight of the car hurtling toward them at the last possible moment. Her pupils dilated with fear as she sprinted to protect Susan, but it was too late. The impact was brutal, sending a figure crashing to the ground, blood pooling swiftly around them.
The pedestrians nearby erupted in terrified screams.
As Susan slowly blinked her eyes open, she was astonished to find she felt no pain, only to see Esteban before her. His eyes were shut tight, blood streaming from a wound on his head as he clutched her fiercely.
Jada was thrilled, thinking her plan was about to succeed. But she hadn’t anticipated Esteban rushing in at that moment. Her face flushed with anger, and she clenched her fists tightly as fury surged from deep within her.
She knew it! Esteban only had Susan in his heart. He didn’t care about anyone else, least of all her.
The thought of Esteban’s bias toward Susan only fueled Jada’s anger further.
Determined, she prepared to slam her foot on the accelerator, wanting to run them over.
But suddenly, the car window shattered with a deafening crash. Glass shards flew in all directions, some piercing her skin. She winced in pain. The next second, the door was wrenched open, and a strong hand yanked her out.
It was Isabella—she had broken the window with her bare hand. Though it was covered in blood, it still showed remarkable strength.
Her cold eyes blazed with fury as she raised her hand and slapped Jada hard across the face. Jada’s head tilted to the side from the impact. The force of the slap instantly extinguished her fiery attitude, leaving her with a look of panic and fear.
“You… What are you going to do? Do you want to kill me? Go ahead! Kill me if you can!” Jada shouted defiantly.
“Fine! I’ll kill you then.”
As she spoke, Isabella raised her fist.
Though Jada had been defiant moments ago, terror now overwhelmed her. From the coldness in Isabella’s eyes, she realized that Isabella was serious about taking her life.
She trembled in fear. “Isabella, you know that murder is a crime.”
Isabella couldn’t help but let out a laugh. Just moments ago, Jada had wanted to kill Susan, but now she was concerned about murder being a crime?
At that moment, Elaine quickly stepped between them, saying, “Isabella, calm down. Let’s take Esteban to the hospital first.”
Isabella glanced behind her. Esteban lay on the ground, blood covering him, while Susan was beside him, crying and calling out to him.
Isabella looked at Elaine, took a deep breath, and nodded. Without another word, she grabbed Jada by the arm and dragged her into her car.
When they arrived at the hospital, Esteban was immediately rushed into the operating room.
Outside the operating room, Isabella kicked the back of Jada’s knee, forcing her to abruptly kneel on the cold floor.
Susan, her eyes red-rimmed, watched as the operating room light flickered on. It reminded her of Esteban’s uncertain fate inside.
Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
Would Esteban be okay?
Her heart pounded at the thought.
Clasping her hands together, Susan closed her eyes and prayed.
“God, please save my dad.”
Time passed, but the light in the operating room remained on, and Susan’s anxiety only deepened.
Dane, who had heard the news, rushed to the hospital. He wrapped his arms around Susan, comforting her.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure you get the best doctors for your dad. He’ll be fine,” he reassured her.
As Susan melted into Dane’s warm embrace, she finally broke down, tears flowing freely.
Dane gently stroked her hair, but his cold, unwavering gaze remained fixed on Jada, who was kneeling on the floor, trembling in fear.
Now that Jada had calmed down, she realized the gravity of her situation. After everything she had done, neither the Patton family nor Esteban would let her go.
The anxiety of her actions gnawed at her as she contemplated the consequences.
She made a decision in her heart.
She would have to let her parents get a divorce.
Then, she and Mara could move to another city, away from everyone.
The thought of starting fresh in a new place fueled Jada’s resolve.
While lost in this thought, imagining a new life, Susan stood up and walked toward her.
