“Alright, then. Explain this new project that has you so excited.”
Wesley replied, “Perfume creation. Jada is remarkably talented, and I plan to market her products internationally…”
Before Wesley could continue, Clayton’s anger erupted.
“Enough! Obey me and follow my instructions!”
Wesley responded, “I’m sorry, Grandpa. I’ve been under your guidance for the last ten years, but now I’ve matured. I want to carve my own path. Please, let me have this opportunity.” With that, Wesley ended the call.
Clayton was overwhelmed with frustration, feeling like he might burst. He realized that his overprotectiveness had made Wesley an easy target for manipulation by others. Now, Wesley wouldn’t even listen to him!
A sharp sting of despair hit Clayton. He could dismiss Wesley, but what then? He was aging, and the company needed a strong leader. Could he possibly find such a leader within his own family?
Time was slipping away, and he wouldn’t be around much longer. How could he manage to train the ideal successor? For the first time, Clayton questioned his judgment. Perhaps he shouldn’t have placed his trust in Wesley from the beginning… Clayton’s emotions were conflicted.
“Mr. Lambert!” His thoughts were abruptly interrupted by his assistant, who burst through the door.
Clayton scowled. “This is a place for meditation. Why are you so emotional? What’s the matter?”
“Your grandson has returned!” the assistant exclaimed with enthusiasm.
Clayton’s scowl deepened. Why would Wesley come here? Realizing the confusion, the assistant quickly added, “It’s Mr. Zahir Lambert!”
Upon hearing the name, Clayton was taken aback. His prayer beads slipped through his fingers. He instinctively rose and moved toward the door. There, he saw a familiar face.
It was Zahir. Zahir was back!
Tears welled up in Clayton’s eyes, and a single tear rolled down his cheek. His long years of prayer and devotion had finally paid off.
“Grandpa…” Zahir approached the elderly man with caution, calling out softly.
Clayton took his hand and said, “Zahir, you seem thinner!” The straightforward remark triggered tears in both of their eyes. Zahir embraced Clayton tightly.
“Grandpa, I’m sorry it took me so long to come back.”
“It’s alright, it’s alright. Just tell me where you’ve been all this time. Why are you only returning now?” Clayton asked, patting Zahir’s shoulder.
They entered the cozy cabin, greeted by the comforting scent of brewing tea. Zahir began sharing stories of his journey. Clayton’s eyes remained moist as he listened. “You’ve always been so kind-hearted. Your acts of goodness must have been so impactful that even the heavens couldn’t bear to let you suffer.”
Zahir nodded, then inquired, “And you, Grandpa? How have you been all these years?”
Seeing his family again brought back waves of memories. Most of his memories had now returned.
Clayton sighed, his expression heavy. “After your accident, I never stopped looking for you, but I couldn’t find a trace. Now, your younger brother is running the company, and he’s created quite a disaster. Your return now feels like fate.”
Zahir said reassuringly, “Grandpa, now that I’m back, I won’t let you worry about the company anymore.” His voice was steady and filled with determination.
“I’m relieved to hear that. I believe in you. After all, you’ve always been the most outstanding among the younger generation.” Clayton nodded, feeling both pride and hope.
Zahir had always been sensible. As a child, he never caused trouble and displayed a sense of responsibility and maturity beyond his years. So, now that he was back, it was only natural for him to take over the company.
In contrast, Wesley had always been more carefree and rebellious, often getting into trouble. Despite Clayton’s best efforts to guide him, he still couldn’t match Zahir’s steadiness.
It seemed that fate had charted the paths of Zahir and Wesley from the very beginning.
Clayton and Zahir shared a simple vegetarian meal at the temple before returning to Ansport. Meanwhile, Jada was busy in her office.
She was well-versed in finance and investment, and had spent the entire afternoon persuading Wesley to sign a contract with her. If Wesley helped her transport perfumes overseas for sale, she could establish a thriving market that would elevate her brand to new heights. With that success, her income would soar, and she would no longer have to rely on anyone else.
Convinced by Jada’s words, Wesley firmly believed their collaboration would be a success.
Jada was delighted to have finalized the contract with Wesley. With the project settled, she invited him to dinner to celebrate.
But just as they stepped out of her office, her assistant rushed over, looking panicked.
Jada asked, confused, “What’s wrong?”
The assistant’s face was filled with tension. “The chairman of the Lambert Group has announced a change in the company’s CEO.”
Jada and Wesley were both stunned for a moment. They struggled to process the news.
Wesley was Clayton’s only grandson. Who else could Clayton possibly appoint as the CEO besides him?
At that moment, Wesley’s phone buzzed incessantly. He pulled it from his pocket and checked, only to find the company group chat flooded with messages.
He opened the group chat and scrolled through the thread. It turned out that Clayton had personally appointed Zahir as the new CEO.
Zahir?
How could it be him? Wasn’t he supposed to be dead? Wesley’s mind raced as he recalled the person he had seen at the international competition. Could it really have been Zahir?
Had Zahir really not died?
“Wesley, what’s wrong?” Jada couldn’t help but ask when she noticed his unusual expression. He didn’t seem to hear her. She asked again, but he was still lost in thought.
She looked at his phone and saw the messages. The confirmation of Zahir’s appointment as the new CEO hit her like a gut punch.
Jada’s brows furrowed in confusion, concern creeping into her expression. “Isn’t your brother dead? How could he come back?” She was in utter disbelief, struggling to comprehend the shocking news. Finally, Wesley snapped out of his stupor. He shook his head. “I don’t know either. Let’s go and find out.”
Wesley approached the elevator with purposeful strides, unwilling to waste any more time. Jada quickened her pace to keep up with him.
In the CEO’s office of Lambert Group, Clayton and Zahir were deep in conversation.
Just then, Wesley barged in. When he saw Zahir on the sofa, he was so shocked that he froze in place. Jada, arriving shortly after him, halted abruptly, her eyes wide in disbelief.
It was really Zahir in the flesh.
Indeed, he had returned.
“Zahir…” Wesley whispered, his voice shaking. “You’re… alive? How?”
Clayton’s face darkened upon hearing this. He raised the walking stick in his hand and struck Wesley’s leg hard. Wesley groaned in pain and dropped to his knees.
Clayton scolded angrily, “You bastard! You actually wish your brother dead?”
“No! That’s not what I meant!” Wesley was extremely aggrieved, feeling misunderstood.
“From now on, you don’t need to manage the company. Get out of here!” Clayton’s words struck like a thunderclap, cutting through the tense atmosphere in the office. He was so furious that he didn’t want to see Wesley anymore.
Wesley’s face turned deathly pale.
He stood up and walked toward Zahir. “Zahir, where have you been all these years?”
“I lost my memory,” Zahir replied in a deep voice.
So that was it. Zahir couldn’t return because he had lost his memory.
Wesley gritted his teeth in frustration. He turned to Clayton and said, “Grandpa, Zahir hasn’t managed the company for years. He might be unfamiliar with the operations…”
Before he could finish, Clayton struck him with his walking stick again. “Even if he’s unfamiliar with the company, he’s still far better than you. Have you seen the mess you’ve made in the company in just one month?”
Wesley didn’t dare to respond.
Jada, who had been silent up until now, was boiling with anxiety. If Zahir took over the company, what would happen to her project?
“Mr. Lambert, no one can manage the company perfectly in the beginning. But there is room for improvement. Wesley is still young. Please give him a chance to learn and hone his skills.” Worried about her project, Jada couldn’t help but speak up for Wesley.
“Who do you think you are to lecture me? Get out of here! Do you think I don’t know that you’ve been influencing Wesley? You’re behind all of this! If you still have any decency, stay away from my grandson!” Clayton showed no mercy.
