“How do you know that?” I asked. “After everything we’ve done to her, what if she doesn’t? And that piece of shit, he thinks he can have her attacked. He’s playing dirty to get her in good books.”
“But he didn’t, Zane,” Aaron reassured. “You did. You won that battle.”
“What if he continues to play dirty and it works? My mate just told me she wants nothing to do with me. You know what she just said? She asked me to find out how to get rid of the mate bond.”
Now, they all looked shocked. “What?” Sheila said in disbelief. “She wants to get rid of it? How can she?”
“She’s human,” I defended. “And stuck with two wereolves, not even one. She’s terrified, guys. I didn’t want to reveal all of this to her, but that guy keeps creating these impossible situations.”
My blood started to boil once more.
“Alright, Zane. Calm down. Your eyes are black.”
I closed them shut, gritting my teeth.
“If he’s playing dirty, so should you,” Warner stated. “What will you do if he kidnaps her or something?”
“I will rip his head off,” I seethed, glancing at him.
“Why don’t you beat him to it?” Warner shrugged. “That’s what I’d do.”
“You’d kidnap your mate?”
“Yeah,” he replied. “If I had a human mate, and she had another werewolf mate too, I would abduct her and take her away. Better safe than sorry.”
“She’s gonna hate me if I do that. I don’t want to scare her or make her cry anymore than I already have in the last ten years.”
“That’s your call then. But if Blake tries anything, you should do it.”
“I will,” I nodded, “if I have to. But I will try my best that I don’t.”
‘She’s gonna choose you, Zane. This is just really new to her for
– now. You have to understand her feelings. You can’t lose your cool, or you’ll scare her.” Aaron placed his hand on my shoulder.
“I know, I know. I haven’t lost my cool in front of her even once. That’s why we’re all out here right now, while she is in there.” I glanced at the school.
“You long for her, Zane,” Sheila said as stepped beside me. “She’ll see that and love you for it eventually. Give her some time if you don’t want to hurt her.”
“I will,” I sighed, raising my eyes to the sky. If the Moon Goddess could see me right now, I hoped she would remember this. I was doing my best for my mate. For Lia. Even if I had been a complete idiot in the past.
-LIA’S POV-
After I spent some time surfing the internet between classes, I didn’t feel as confident anymore.
There was nothing of substance on there-everything was related to fantasy movies or TV shows. None of it was about the real world, about the world I’d been pushed into against my will.
By now, I knew that even if I found something real, it would only be about normal situations. Situations in which a human was mated to one werewolf, not two. I had no clue what I was supposed to do, how I was to balance both Zane and Blake’s affections, how I was supposed to be available for both of them equally. I just wanted out. I wanted nothing to do with this. And yet, there was no way to do that.
Except maybe one.
When I reached home that day, I went straight to my parents.
“I would like to move,” I announced. “To some other town. Anywhere else. I don’t wanna live here anymore.”
Mom and Dad exchanged a look.
“Is everything okay?” Dad asked.
“Is it about that boy?” Mom pushed.
Yes. But I couldn’t tell them that or they’d never take me seriously.
“No. I’m just done with this place, Mom. It’s not for me,” I stated.
“You have to give us a reason, darling, We can’t just move towns because you’re not feeling it,” said Dad.
I opened my mouth, then closed it. Then thought of something to say, and decided against it.
“Never mind,” I whispered, and then went to my bedroom.
I fell asleep out of exhaustion. Thankfully it managed to shut my mind down for a few hours. The next morning, I woke up to no calls or text messages. Honestly, I was surprised that the boys were actually listening to me.
From what they told me, it felt like I was the most important person in their lives.
So how could I stop being that person? What could be the way?
Would it work if I started to date someone else?
If I married someone else? Would that destroy the bond, or was it ever deeper than that?
Who could I ask? There was no one I knew of who would help me when it came to this.
I returned to the internet, hoping there would be something or someone that would catch my eye. Anything at all.
After an hour, when I was about to give up, I suddenly came across a website. The description spoke of an order that hunted werewolves in the real world. I didn’t think it was real, but I was grasping at straws. I didn’t want anyone to hurt either of them, but if this ‘order’ really hunted werewolves, maybe they could tell me more about them. About mate bonds and getting rid of them. So I left them a message, saying I needed help. If I asked questions, they would definitely not respond if they were real and secret. But if I said I needed help, and they were real, they could reach out to me. I mentioned the name of my town, and provided no other details.
My phone buzzed, and I realised I was getting late for school. I quickly shut everything down, got dressed, and left. Mom tried to ask me what was wrong once again, but I dismissed her with reassurance. I couldn’t get my parents involved into any of this.
I arrived at school on time and was rushing to class when Sheila blocked my way. I froze, my eyes darting around to see if the rest of The Hounds were with her, particularly if Zane was there.
“Relax,” she said, “I’m not here to bully you.”
I released a breath, staring at her. She was a werewolf too-I couldn’t forget that for one second. And while she had never physically assaulted me, it didn’t matter. I wasn’t even her mate that she would play nice.
“What do you want?”
“Just to talk,” she replied. “Could we sit somewhere?”
“I don’t wanna sit with you, because I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stand up after.”
She gave me a sheepish smile. “You mean the glue on your chair?”
“Yes, I mean the glue on my chair in grade four.”
“I’m sorry, Lu-I mean, Lia. I’m sorry for all we did in the past. But you know things are different now. You are important to us now, and we would never even think about playing a prank on you ever again.”
“Why? Because I’m Zane’s mate now?”
“Yes, Exactly.”
“Doesn’t mean I should sit down with you and have a chat. I don’t want anything to do with your… species, alright? Including
Zane.”
“Don’t say that, Lia,” she said softly. “It’s gonna break his heart if you keep saying stuff like this.”
-LIA’S POV-
“I’ve already told him that,” I replied.
“And he cried after. He tried to hide it, he tried to pretend that he was just mad, but I know for sure that he cried at night in his bedroom. His pillow was wet in the morning.”
“What were you doing with his pillow?” I raised a brow. “Is your mate okay with that?”
“He is. He sent me up there to check on him. Zane was taking too long to come down.”
“And? You found him crying?”
“No,” she frowned, shaking her head. “He was in the washroom then. But his pillow was wet.”
“Sad. I’ll go console him in class if you’d excuse me.” I tried to walk away, but she moved with me, not letting me go.
“He’s not at school today,” she said. “That is why I’m here to talk to you.”
Now I paused. “What happened? Is he… okay?”
“Yes, yes. He’s fine. He’s busy with pack duties.”
“Pack duties?”
“Yeah.”
I stared at her. “Anyway, can I go? Have you said everything you wanted to?”
“No,” she frowned, “I haven’t even started.”
