The doctor was supposed to keep her secret in exchange for a hundred thousand. She had already transferred the money!
“Charlatan!” Rosemarie suddenly burst out, her face flushed with anger as she slammed her hand on the table. “I thought you were extraordinary! Turns out, you’re just mediocre! I was in such agony that my entire knee was bleeding—everyone saw it!”
The memory jolted Wesley. Yes, he had seen the blood. How could it not have been painful? Hesitantly, he turned to Isabella. “Dr. Mia, could there have been a mistake? Would you mind checking again?”
Isabella eyed him with thinly veiled exasperation. So stupid!
How could someone as wise as Clayton have a grandson this foolish?
Relieved by Wesley’s unwavering loyalty, Rosemarie inwardly smirked at the doctor, already plotting how to tarnish her reputation.
“Dr. Mia?” Rosemarie’s voice suddenly echoed.
Wesley glanced over, startled. Rosemarie hadn’t spoken. He looked again and realized the voice was coming from the doctor’s phone.
The recording continued to play. “Dr. Mia, do you need anything? Could you do me a favor? I can give you anything you want.”
“What favor?” the doctor’s voice followed.
“Help me… lie about my injury…” Rosemarie whispered, her tone desperate.
“And why should I help you?” the doctor questioned.
“I know you became a doctor to take money. I can offer you a hundred thousand. How does that sound?” Rosemarie continued.
As the recording played, Isabella’s expression transformed, a shadow of panic crossing her face.
Wesley turned to her, shock flooding his eyes. “You— you lied to me?” His voice faltered, disbelief filling the space between them.
He had idolized Rosemarie, trusting her without question. But now, clarity hit him like a cold wave. “No… I see. You’re not Rosemarie. The real Rosemarie would have won the race despite the injury. Who are you?”
Rising anger tightened Wesley’s chest. A rich young man who had rarely encountered deceit, now faced betrayal head-on. For the first time, he had been thoroughly and completely deceived.
He reached out, intent on removing Rosemarie’s mask, determined to see who this imposter was.
Rosemarie instinctively dodged, panic surging through her.
She couldn’t afford to be exposed!
With Wesley’s temperament, she knew he would ruin her if he discovered who she truly was.
Isabella watched the scene unfold, not anticipating Rosemarie’s sudden move. In a flash, Rosemarie lunged toward her, tearing away her veil.
The veil fell to the floor, and despite Isabella’s quick reflexes, it was too late—her face was revealed to all.
“Isabella!”
Wesley gasped, completely shocked.
He hadn’t been this stunned in an entire year, his mind spinning in disbelief.
“It’s actually you, Isabella!” Rosemarie quickly defended herself, snapping back. “This is a setup! I never said any of that. It’s all AI-generated!”
Isabella’s gaze hardened, her cold eyes locking onto Rosemarie.
Wesley clenched his fists, frustration boiling over. “So that’s how it is, Isabella. You knew I was coming here to see Dr. Mia today, so you pretended to be her just to deceive me and make me doubt Rosemarie, right?”
Isabella, uninterested in explaining, simply replied, “If you don’t believe me, feel free to consult another doctor. The diagnosis will be the same.”
With that, she turned and walked out of the room.
Wesley felt the urge to run after Isabella but hesitated, his eyes flicking back to Rosemarie. Confusion clouded his thoughts.
Rosemarie sensed his turmoil, her voice soft and reassuring. “Wesley, it’s alright. Isabella is so cunning—it’s only natural you were misled.”
Wesley remained silent, his expression dark as he turned and left.
Once outside, he dialed his grandfather.
“Grandpa, Dr. Mia didn’t…”
“No, she did,” Clayton answered, his tone certain.
“But I didn’t see her,” Wesley replied, frowning in confusion.
“That’s strange,” Clayton said, sounding puzzled. “She texted me saying she had arrived!”
Wesley’s mind whirled. Could Isabella really be Dr. Mia? He wandered aimlessly down the street, his mind numb and tangled, unable to discern what was real and what was fake anymore.
In the midst of his confusion, his phone buzzed—it was Jada.
“Wesley.”
He muttered back, “Jada…”
She said, “I know you’re feeling conflicted, and so am I. But let’s not overthink this. Let’s focus on the competition and see if she can lead us to an international victory.”
Wesley knew she was right—perhaps that was the only path forward. He agreed. There was no point in overthinking now. It was better to focus on training and aim for a strong showing in the competition.
Meanwhile, after leaving the restaurant, Isabella returned to her office to wrap up some final tasks. She recounted her meeting with Wesley to Clayton, who sighed deeply and said, “Dr. Mia, Wesley isn’t usually like this. He’s just too smitten with Rosemarie. I’m sorry for the trouble.”
“Just keep an eye on Wesley when you can,” Isabella advised.
“Thank you for the advice, Dr. Mia,” Clayton said, feeling a bit embarrassed.
After finishing her work, Isabella headed home. Lately, she’d been feeling a bit bored—Susan had taken over the Riggs Group and was too busy, and Andrew was swamped with company affairs as well. So, Isabella decided to return home and spend some time with Elaine.
Then, Maxine’s call caught her off guard.
“Miss Patton, I’d like to invite you to dinner,” Maxine said.
“Oh? What made you think of inviting me to dinner all of a sudden?” Isabella asked, a bit surprised.
Maxine’s response was quick. “Well, Norton and I got back together.”
At that, everything clicked for Isabella. After all, during the recent avalanche, Norton had risked his life to save Maxine. Who wouldn’t be moved by such a gesture?
Isabella chuckled softly.
Since she had no plans for the evening, Isabella accepted the dinner invitation. Maxine and Norton had gone all out, reserving the entire restaurant just for the three of them.
“Isabella,” Norton greeted her with a polite nod. “Is Andrew coming?”
“He’s been pretty busy lately,” Isabella replied.
Norton muttered under his breath, “Funny, I saw him shopping the other day…”
“What did you say?” Isabella asked, her brow furrowing.
“Nothing, nothing,” Norton quickly replied. He added, “Let’s eat, I’ve already ordered a few dishes—take a look and see if there’s anything else you’d like.”
Isabella stayed quiet, her gaze fixed on Norton. Norton suddenly felt as though the weight of the world had settled on his shoulders.
Maxine, with a half-smile, added fuel to the fire. “What did you say? Why stop halfway?”
Under the mounting pressure from both women, Norton could only manage a weak, “Really?”
Maxine raised an eyebrow. “Hmm?”
