The more someone cared, the angrier they became when they felt betrayed.

Howard, in this moment, was a prime example. His peak anger indicated a profound care for Milly. A deep ache settled in Nalani’s heart.

Inside the room, Milly remained silent, her gaze fixed on Howard, unyielding and wordless. Her silence only fueled Howard’s anger further.

He sneered. “You were sent by the Serpentine to infiltrate my life, weren’t you? You didn’t anticipate that I would uncover your plan so swiftly, did you?”

A flicker of shock crossed Milly’s eyes, her expression changing for the first time.

Howard was aware of the Serpentine Palers!

She had always believed Howard was oblivious to such matters.

A sharp pang clenched Howard’s heart. He was towering over Milly, his presence formidable.

“Surprised that I discovered the truth?” Howard asked.

Milly admitted, “I am indeed a member of the Serpentine Palers, but I was not the one assigned to get close to you.”

“What?” Howard’s voice faltered, disbelief etching his features. “That’s impossible.” If not Milly, then who?

Suddenly, the door burst open. Howard was shoved aside as a bullet pierced Milly’s arm.

Nalani entered the room, shutting the door behind her, her gun trained on Milly. Milly dodged with agile precision, and within seconds, the two exchanged a flurry of blows.

In the heat of the confrontation, Milly lunged at Nalani, a flash of cold light gleaming in her hand. It was a dagger!

Milly’s weapon of choice.

Though small and exquisite, it was lethally efficient. A flash of terror crossed Nalani’s eyes. Milly was a legend within the organization; she could assassinate anyone with a single, swift move, and her victim would fall silently, unbeknownst to all.

“Stop, or I’ll kill him!”

Nalani’s voice was firm, her gun now aimed directly at Howard.

Milly froze, the air thick with tension.

Howard looked at Nalani, his expression a complex tapestry of emotions. He had harbored suspicions about her, but the revelation that both she and Milly were part of the Serpentine Palers was beyond his expectations.

“Milly, do you know why the Serpentine Palers sent me to get close to Howard?” Nalani’s voice was steady. “It’s because they know about your past connections with him. You couldn’t harm him, but I can. You care deeply about Howard, so now I’ll offer you a choice and ensure his escape from the organization’s clutches.”

“How will you do it?” Milly’s voice was tense, cautious.

Nalani’s plan was audacious. “On the day we get engaged, Howard will seemingly die in a car accident. Afterward, he’ll undergo plastic surgery. Howard Patton will disappear from this world, and I’ve already crafted a new identity for him.”

During her time with Howard, Nalani had developed genuine feelings for him.

Howard was an exceptional individual, standing out among men like the serene moon in the night sky—calm and gentle.

She found herself unable to surrender him to the organization’s dark designs.

Milly weighed the viability of the proposed scheme, her voice cautious as she asked, “What do you need from me?”

“Utilize the method you excel at to kill yourself,” Nalani instructed, her eyes gleaming with malicious intent.

Howard’s expression abruptly hardened. “Absolutely not!”

“If you don’t kill yourself, I’ll kill him,” Nalani said, looking directly at Howard.

Milly replied, “Stop!”

Nalani’s eyes gleamed mischievously. “How about it? Let’s begin.”

She glanced at Milly, a slight smile playing on her lips.

Jealousy seethed within her; despite her long-standing efforts, Milly had won Howard’s true love, while she had made no progress.

Milly sighed reluctantly. “Alright.”

Howard’s face twisted in protest.

Nalani lunged, and startled, she instinctively pressed the trigger.

Milly’s face contorted with concern. She moved to aid Howard when he subtly tapped his ring. In an instant, it transformed into a small shield, intercepting the bullet.

Nalani stood frozen, her mouth agape. No wonder the organization wanted Howard so badly—his abilities were truly extraordinary. Even a simple ring could morph into such a formidable shield!

In that split second, Milly materialized behind Nalani, who collapsed to the floor a moment later.

“Is she dead?” Howard asked, his face grim.

“Now she’s just unconscious. I’ll hand her over to the Serpentine Palers,” Milly replied.

Howard breathed a sigh of relief—not out of pity for Nalani, but from an instinctive fear of Milly having blood on her hands. When he noticed the bloodstains on Milly’s shirt, he frowned.

“No need. Going to the hospital would attract too much attention,” Milly said, tipping the hem of her shirt to wrap around her wound. Her practiced movements suggested a history of similar situations.

Howard watched her with a complex mix of emotions.

“What did Nalani mean by what she just said?”

“That?”

“She said you couldn’t harm me,” Howard stared intently at Milly.

“And your past connections with me?” Milly responded in a dismissive tone.

“Confuse you? Don’t worry about it. I’m taking Nalani away,” Milly said. She hoisted Nalani up and exited through the window. Howard watched Milly’s retreating figure, lost in thought.

Downstairs, Isabella and Andrew were deep in discussion about the engagement date with Elaine. Elaine had reviewed several options, and Isabella found them agreeable. They ultimately settled on the soonest one.

A hint of something flickered in Andrew’s eyes.

Isabella spoke up, excitement in her voice. “Mom, should we also pick a date for Andrew and me?”

Elaine, momentarily taken aback, then smiled warmly. “Sure. Let’s find a date for you two as well! With the New Year around the corner, it’s perfect timing for your engagement as well. We must choose a good day!”

“Great!” Andrew’s eyes sparkled with amusement, his voice gentle and charming. “Elaine, I’ll follow your lead.”

“Sure, I’m so happy lately. Dane is getting married, and you two and Harold are about to get engaged as well,” Elaine said, her voice brimming with joy.

Isabella playfully pinched Andrew.

“Darling, why are you pinching me?”

Elaine and Glenn turned their gazes toward Isabella, whose cheeks were tinged with a flush of embarrassment.

“It was an accident,” she said.

“Alright, darling,” Andrew replied, his demeanor radiating affection and gentleness.

Elaine couldn’t resist chiming in, her voice laced with maternal warmth, “With Andrew, please be kind.”

Isabella replied, “Mom, I know.”

Andrew chimed in respectfully, “Elaine, Isabella treats me very well.”

Elaine nodded, seeing Andrew as both compliant and sensible. “You just love to spoil Isabella. Remember, Isabella, you must treat Andrew kindly and not take advantage of his good nature. Understand?”
