Mara didn’t respond. Then, the man said, “By the way, where’s Jada? I haven’t seen my daughter for many years. I also miss her.”
Mara’s expression changed at the mention of her daughter.
She contemplated her daughter’s current situation, then sighed, “I should look for Jada now. She’s currently grounded.” She began to worry again.
The man snorted coldly and said, “Esteban is unfair. He wants to give everything to Susan? Let’s see if I’ll allow that to happen. Don’t worry. Now that I’m back, everything in the Riggs family will belong to you and Jada.”
Days passed in a flash. It had already been a week since Susan won first place in the competition. She became an instant sensation and successfully became the director of the company’s perfume-making department. She was confirmed as the future heir to the CEO position.
After Elaine found out Susan was pregnant, she cooked delicious dishes every day. Also, she and Esteban arranged a day to discuss the engagement plans. They chose the largest VIP room in a hotel, a lavish space with expansive windows offering stunning views of the skyline. Most of the people present were from the Patton family. Only Esteban and Erick represented Susan’s family.
Erick was in high spirits. His broad smile revealed his pride. He had always been proud of Susan. Now that she was about to get married, he couldn’t help but feel a swell of joy. He was the happiest among everyone.
Elaine maintained a gentle and polite demeanor as she said, “We’ve all known each other for a long time, and our families have had a good relationship ever since. I can guarantee that once Susan marries into our family, we’ll treat her as our own daughter.”
Esteban smiled, his expression softening as he spoke about Susan. “My daughter is a little stubborn, but she has a good heart. Since her mother passed away early, she lacks motherly affection. She’ll need a lot of care from you in the future.”
Esteban, apparently in a good mood, rarely spoke in such a gentle and soft tone. Susan couldn’t help but glance at him, feeling a little complicated. She had thought Esteban wouldn’t care much about her wedding. After all, he usually didn’t pay attention to her. She didn’t expect him to be so happy today.
Everyone clinked glasses and enjoyed their dinner while chatting and laughing happily. The atmosphere around them was very harmonious.
Susan reached for the spicy stew and was about to take a bite when Dane suddenly snatched it away. He soaked it in water before putting it back on her plate.
“It’s too spicy. You need to be cautious with your diet now that you’re pregnant,” Dane remarked thoughtfully.
Susan pouted. “Pregnant or not, I’m not incapacitated. I still enjoy spicy food. There’s no need to be overly cautious.” Over the past few days, she had abstained from any spicy dishes under Dane’s vigilant supervision.
Compared to the nausea she had endured earlier, the deprivation of spicy foods felt even more excruciating. Naturally, Susan was a devotee of spicy flavors.
Elaine offered a comforting smile. “Pregnant women do need to be careful, but moderation is key. Susan can indulge a little if she wants to.”
“But I recently read in a book that it’s better for pregnant women to avoid overly spicy foods,” Dane said, his voice laced with concern.
Since Susan’s pregnancy news, Dane had immersed himself in numerous pregnancy guides, eager to ensure everything was perfect. Seeing how Dane cherished Susan like a prized possession, both Esteban and Erick seemed visibly reassured.
“Not everything in books is true,” Elaine chuckled. “A little bit here and there is perfectly fine. Just don’t go overboard.”
Eventually, Dane sighed. “Alright, a little bit.”
Susan’s face lit up. “Yes, Mom, I’m fond of spicy food!” It wasn’t until she finished speaking that she realized everyone was staring at her. She had inadvertently called Elaine “Mom.” Her cheeks turned a bright shade of red.
“Um, I—“
“Oh, it’s fine. I’m about to become your mother-in-law anyway,” Elaine replied with a gentle smile, ensuring Susan felt at ease.
“Yes, we’ll be a family,” Isabella joined in, laughing. “Soon, we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other.”
Susan nodded, her eyes sweeping over the warm, welcoming faces around her. Her heart swelled with happiness.
Laughter echoed through the room, but Howard only managed a forced smile, barely touching his food. Isabella noticed Howard’s detached demeanor and suspected he was preoccupied with thoughts of Milly. With a sigh, Isabella pondered, why must love be so complicated in this world?
After the meal, Esteban and Susan made their way home.
“You’re getting married soon, so I’ve prepared a few things for you,” Esteban announced as he handed Susan a large box.
Susan accepted the box with a nod and opened it. Expecting perhaps an apartment or some money, she was utterly shocked to find it contained not only several properties but also commercial shops—and astonishingly, all of his father’s shares in the Riggs Group! Susan was stunned.
It was typical of her father to provide her with a safety net, but this was beyond anything she had imagined, especially the shares.
“I don’t need so much,” she stammered, overwhelmed.
She tried to hand the share transfer documents back to Esteban. “This is too valuable. I can’t accept it.”
“You are the future owner of the Riggs Group,” Esteban replied calmly. “The shares will be yours later. These include not only my shares but also your mother’s.”
A trace of sadness flickered in Esteban’s steady gaze as he watched Susan embark on her path to happiness. It pleased him, yet he was acutely aware that they would spend less time together in the future.
For a brief moment, he felt a sense of reluctance.
“With your own assets, no one will dare look down on you. The Patton family is a good family, but you should still possess what’s rightfully yours,” Esteban declared.
Looking into her father’s eyes, Susan suddenly felt an inexplicable urge to cry.
“Are you really giving me the Riggs Group?” she questioned, her voice trembling slightly.
“That’s right.”
This had been Susan’s goal from the beginning, but she hadn’t expected it to happen so smoothly. She had always thought her father favored her more.
“Alright, but I wouldn’t be able to manage all these shops on my own,” Susan said.
“Don’t worry,” Esteban reassured her. “I’ll hire a professional manager to help you oversee everything.”
Susan clutched the gift tightly. Though it was material wealth, it bore a tremendous emotional weight. She couldn’t shake the nagging suspicion that her father was bestowing these gifts not out of affection, but because she had become useful to him.
“Once you’re married, build a good life with Dane. He’s a good man, just let him know,” Esteban said, his eyes filled with an unusual tenderness and affection that Susan had never witnessed before.
“Okay,” she murmured, her head bowed, a profound heaviness settling in her heart.
She had yearned for such a warm family moment for years, yet now, it felt strangely uncomfortable.
The next day, everyone was excited when they saw the big news: Susan and Dane would hold their engagement party soon, and the entire family wanted to celebrate with them. Today was also the day Jada was released from the basement. Her legs wobbled, and her once vibrant face looked pale. She had lost ten pounds, leaving her looking frail and exhausted. Mara felt so sorry for her that she couldn’t help but hug her, tears filling her eyes.
“Your father is so cruel. How can he have the heart to lock you up for seven days?” Mara cried even harder.
At that moment, Jada’s transformation was startling. Her eyes were cold and hardened with hatred. However, there was a surprising calmness in her demeanor.
After eating and changing into a sleek, elegant outfit, Jada stood in front of the mirror, checking her appearance. Her dress accentuated her slim figure and hid her swollen knees. Although she still looked pale, the makeup she applied made her regain some of her nobility and dazzling appearance.
Mara told Jada about Susan’s engagement party and Esteban’s plan to give the Riggs Group to Susan.
With tears in her eyes, Mara cursed Esteban for being heartless. Jada, on the other hand, remained calm. She said indifferently, “Should I be surprised? I’ve known for a long time that he only cares about Susan.”
“What are we going to do, Jada? We can’t just sit still and wait,” Mara said, clearly distraught.
“Wait? I’m not the one who sits still and waits,” Jada sneered. Then she noticed a call from Wesley. She turned to Mara and said, “Mom, I’m going out first.”
Soon, Jada arrived at the racetrack.
Wesley had been busy over the past few days, organizing a skilled team and reaching out to former HB Club members, convincing them to join him and create a fully-fledged racing team. He was eager to make a name in international racing and was excited to tell Jada about it. But when he turned to look at her, he was startled to see how frail she looked.
“Jada, what happened? How did you become like this?”
Jada lowered her eyes. “I was foolish, trying to get something I didn’t deserve. So, my father punished me.”
Wesley looked at Jada, raising an eyebrow. He sensed the bitterness in her voice.
“In her voice… ‘Is it because of Susan? You are really no match for that woman. Do you know why? Because she is cunning and deceitful.'”
He was so angry that he gritted his teeth, feeling deeply sorry for Jada.
“Jada, don’t worry. No matter what, I will always be by your side. If Susan really inherits your father’s company, the Lambert Group will have no cooperation with her.”
His words made Jada feel slightly better. Somehow, her mood lightened up.
“Alright. Let’s start our training. Let’s focus on winning the international competition first.”
“Okay!”
