“I don’t know, someone like Sheila? Not her, at least. She’s boring and weird and ugly.”

“Lia is anything but ugly,” Blake snapped, standing up as well. “Maybe you should look into the mirror if you wanna see ugly, Riley.”

“Enough,” I cried. “I am so sorry for disturbing your class, Mrs. Watson. May the three of us leave so that you may continue the lecture in peace?”

Mrs. Watson looked so disappointed that I wanted to sob.

“Yes, Lia. The three of you may leave.”

“Sorry.” I grabbed my bag and marched out of the class, feeling utterly frustrated and exhausted. Blake and Zane followed after me, their steps casual and relaxed. Once we were a safe distance. away from the classroom, I threw my bag on the floor, facing the two of them. “I have had enough of you both,” I declared, glaring at them. “You’re werewolves, you say. You’re strong and have superhuman strength, you can change into huge animals. Okay, I get it. I get all of that. But I do not understand what either of you want to do with me! Blake, why the hell did you move here? What do you want? What did you come searching for? And Zane. What is this rivalry you have with him that the second he shows an interest in me, you suddenly start acting like you will die if you don’t touch me? I was invisible to you! So what is it, both of you? Are you guys only toying with my feelings? Did the two of you decide that I’m some prize one of you may win? Who selected the two of you to compete for my affections? Why now? Why am I stuck in something I have nothing to do with?” I yelled, a tear slipping down my cheek.

Zane and Blake glanced at each other, then at me.

“Fine,” Zane said, running a hand through his hair. “You wanna know why our lives revolve around you now?”

I held my breath, nodding.

“Because you’re our mate. Our fated mate. The one both of us are created for.”

” Gi

-LIA’S POV-

Mates? Fated mates? Like… soulmates? Like that cringe, mushy movie Chris was talking about that day?

I waited for Zane to elaborate, to explain further. Or to maybe start laughing and tell me that he was only pranking me. But it seemed like that was all.

“What?” I asked, my eyebrows pulled together in a deep frown.

Now Blake spoke up, stepping closer to me. He took my hands in his, and the sparks erupted in my skin. “You feel this, Lia?”

I nodded. “You feel it too? I thought it was just me.

“Yes. This is the mate bond in action.” He smiled.

“Can you smell me, Lia?” Zane asked.

“Smell you?”

“Yes.”

I took in a deep breath, his cologne filling my senses. It was mixed with that of Blake, and the combination was deadly. My eyes started to droop shut because of how delicious the scent. was.

“Yes,” I whispered, snapping back to my senses.

“That is also the mate bond in action.”

I glanced up at Blake, into his green and gold eyes.

“What exactly is this mate bond?” I asked.

“I’m not sure how to explain it to you, but it’s the best thing in the world. It’s like we have soulmates. A person destined to be with us. Designed specifically to be with us.”

I pulled my hands away from his, and stepped back.

“So you’re saying that I am created only to be with you?”

“No,” Zane replied, now walking up to me. “You aren’t created only to be with me. Or him. Think of yourself like an anchor. If you were a werewolf, we’d be yours too.”

“An anchor?”

“Yes. So werewolves are biologically and mentally very different from human beings. As you know now, we are stronger, faster, and sharper. All our senses are much more heightened than those of humans. So every emotion we feel is multiplied.”

I nodded, waiting for him to go on.

“If something upsets us, we feel the urge to destroy. If we get angry, there is nothing that can calm us down. If we are sad, we feel pain in our chests. And if we are happy, we can barely keep ourselves from dancing around the room.”

“Speak for yourself,” Blake muttered. “I am not immature like you.”

“Sure,” Zane snorted. “Anyway, so a mate is a person created to calm the werewolf, to add balance to their life and emotions. With you around, I feel much happier, calmer and level headed.”

“But you’ve been always been level headed,” I argued. “I’ve never seen you get mad or show any kind of emotion at school.”

“That is only because he hadn’t turned sixteen yet,” Blake said quickly, not willing to let Zane take any credit. “Werewolves start to feel stronger emotions when they turn sixteen, so the mate bond only activates after that. When I came here, I was already sixteen, so I recognised you as my mate instantly. But you didn’t feel much when I touched you because you weren’t sixteen yet. When you turned sixteen, then you started feeling the tingles.”

I thought for a moment, realising he was right. All this started when Zane and I turned sixteen.

“So is that why you showed up to my house?” I asked, looking at Zane. “First as a werewolf, then as a human?”

“Yes.”

“And that is why you were… smelling me?”

Zane smiled. “Yes. Sorry if that was weird.”

“It was. And that is why you wanted to spend my sixteenth birthday with me.” I glanced at Blake.

“Yeah. But I also just wanted to spend time with you on your birthday, to make you feel special and happy. It didn’t matter that it was your sixteenth. I knew who you were anyway.”

I fell silent again, trying to collect my thoughts, to register everything they had said.

“So… we can just stay friends, you can be around me and everything will be good in your lives?” I asked.

Both of them looked away from me.

I swallowed, realising the deal. “It’s supposed to be a physical bond,” I whispered.

“And emotional,” Zane said quickly. “Both are equally important. It’s not just about sex.”

My cheeks flamed.

“You being around us helps, but the second you go away, or when you do something that threatens our bond, the emotions get even worse,” Blake explained.

My eyes widened. “You’re telling me that my actions basically control your emotions.”

“Yes,” both of them said in unison.

I let out a nervous laugh, pursing my lips.

“So you’re both codependent with me, and the problem is that, if your emotions go haywire, you can end up murdering people or destroying anything that crosses your path. Because you’re not fragile humans, you’re werewolves. You’re like women with raging hormones, but can turn into animals and eat people.”

Zane let out a laugh, while Blake just lowered his gaze.

“Pretty much,” Zane said, grinning.

“That day when you saw me with Zane, is that why you got so angry?” I asked.

Blake nodded. “Your closeness to him threatens our bond.”

“And ours when you’re close to him,” Zane explained.

Wow.

-LIA’S POV-

“So no matter what I do, someone could get hurt,” I whispered.

“Not necessarily,” Blake said.

“But possibly,” Zane admitted.

I ran my hands over my face, blinking hard. “So what do we do now? How do I get out of this? Are there supposed to be two werewolves bonded to one person?”

“No,” they both said.

“It had happened before, but it’s extremely rare, and it usually means something greater is in question,” Blake said.

I glanced at him, then at Zane. “I haven’t heard much of it before. But I have asked people in my pack to find out.”

“Ask them to find out how to get rid of this bond,” I stated.

The boys frowned, their expressions mirroring each other. “Get rid of it?” Zane asked. “You can’t.”

“Too bad, Zane. Because I have to.”

“What are you saying, Lia?” Blake frowned.
