The next day, I went to school with my heart in my mouth. Every step I took was careful and calculated, my eyes and mind. vigilant as I scanned the surroundings. I decided to skip visiting my locker that day, not wanting to be caught there by Zane or Blake. I was going to avoid both of them as much as I possibly could, for as long as I possibly could. I had also left my phone at home so that neither of them could call and ask about my whereabouts. If I was found, I’d lie and say that I forgot it.
I hid in the girls’ washroom until the bell rang to mark the beginning of the first period. Then I hurried to class and sat right at the front, placing my bag on the seat beside me. Mrs. Watson greeted me with a warm smile as she entered the class.
“Good morning, Lia. How are you feeling today?” she asked.
“Good morning, Mrs. Watson. Much better.”
“I’m glad.”
My classmates started to roll in then, and as soon as I saw Christy enter, I removed my bag, signalling for her to come and sit beside me.
“Hi,” she whispered, sitting down with a deep frown. “How are you?”

“I’m okay,” I reassured.
“Where have you been all morning? Blake was searching for you.”
I glanced around and moved closer to her. “I’m avoiding him,” I whispered as softly as I could. “Him and Zane both.”
“Why?” she asked. “I thought the two of them saved your life when that animal attacked. They both told me they got you out.”
“Zane spoke to you?”
“Yes, he did. Yesterday. To ask about you.”
I bit my lip. “Right.”
“I didn’t tell him anything. Just said that you were skipping school.”
“Yeah, he called me.”
“I don’t get the dynamic between you two. Are you guys a thing or something?” she asked.
I raised my eyebrows, shrugging. “I honestly don’t know.”
“You didn’t tell me, Lia,” she said softly. “You’ve been meeting him and you kept it a secret from me.”
“I’m sorry, Chris. I just didn’t know what to tell you. Our meetings weren’t planned, at least not by me. He randomly started coming up to me and being nice to me. I don’t really know what he wants, but I have a feeling he likes me.”
She frowned. “So suddenly? He’s known you his entire life. If he liked you, why didn’t he tell you earlier?”
“Beats me,” I muttered.
“I think he’s playing some kind of a game, Lia. Why would he suddenly grow attracted to you? He’s bullied you your whole life.”
“He hasn’t,” I said, “his friends have.”
“It’s the same thing,” she replied.
I let out a sigh. Explaining this to her without telling her anything else was impossible. In fact, even then, it wouldn’t make much sense. What had him being a werewolf got to do with his sudden interest in me? Yeah, it was stupid.
I heard his footsteps, and his cologne washed over me the moment he entered the class. At this point, I was starting to wonder if this was his cologne, or just his natural scent. I mean, he was a werewolf, so anything was possible.
Zane’s gaze set on me, and then he glanced at the chairs around me. Thankfully, they were all taken. I kept my gaze on Watson, not in the mood to meet his eye. Especially after the previous night. I didn’t know what to feel or do as yet.
I waited for him to take one of the vacant seats, but Zane walked up to the person behind me.
“You. Move.”
My eyes widened, my body tensing up.
“Why?” Jake asked.
“Because I’m telling you to. Move before you’re unable to.”
I heard the chair scrape back, and closed my eyes shut, biting my lip. Zane sat down right behind me, and leaned forward, towards me.
“Hi Lia,” he whispered, giving rise to goosebumps all over my skin. “You trying to hide from me, love?”
I scrunched up my nose, then slowly shook my head.
“Then why aren’t you answering my calls?” he asked.
“I forgot my phone at home,” I lied.
He waited a second. “Liar. Your heart beat spiked when you said that.”
My eyes widened.
“Oh now it’s going crazy in your chest. Relax, love.” He laughed.
I turned to glance at him. “You’re hearing my heart beat? You can tell any time I lic?”
Zane smirked, his blue eyes twinkling with mischief. “Pretty much.”
I turned away from him again, and took a deep breath to calm myself down. One of these days, I was going to have a heart attack.

-LIA’S POV-
“How are you feeling now?” he asked, just as Blake walked into. the class.
I glanced at him, watching how his eyes went from me to Zane then back to me. For a second, they turned completely black.
I sucked in a breath, flinching.
Blake marched up to us, standing beside Christy.
“Can I sit here?” he asked, not even bothering to look at her, his gaze fixated on me.
Christy glanced at me in question. I’d just told her I was avoiding both of them, and now one was sitting behind me, and the other was trying to sit beside me.
“It’s okay,” I told her, not because it was, but because I knew Blake wasn’t going to give up. I didn’t want to create a scene in Mrs. Watson’s class. She was one of the few teachers who still liked me even after my grades dropped slightly.
Christy stood up as soon as I gave her the green signal. Blake sat down in her chair, glaring daggers at me.
“I’ve been worried sick about you, Lia. And you’re sitting here in class, without a care to text me or call me. You should have let me know at least that you’re fine and in school,” he said.
I opened my mouth to apologise to him, to tell him I ‘left’ my phone at home this time, but Zane beat me to it.
“She left her phone at home to avoid us,” he stated, making my mouth part open.
I scowled at him, making him laugh. “What? I’m just telling the truth.”
“He says us you did it to avoid us, and yet you’re sitting here with him,” Blake grumbled.
I clenched my jaw, rolling my eyes. “I’m sitting with you too, Blake. Both of you are very alike.”
“Ew,” said Zane, “I am attractive, Lia.”
“Oh really? Says who?”
“Says you,” he replied, smirking. “The way you reacted to my touch last night told me everything I needed to know.”
“Last night?” Blake asked. “You were with him?”
“You three,” Mrs. Watson called, giving us a pointed look.
“Would you care to share your conversation with the class? We’d love to participate too.”
“Sure,” Zane replied, standing up. “Blake was asking if Lia was with me last night. Lia was about to answer. Tell him, Lia.”
The whole class broke into laughter and chatter, cheering and hooting. I closed my eyes again, wishing the ground would swallow me whole.
“Loser Lia is getting some attention,” Mary sang. “Who thought the world could come to this?”
“And from Zane?” Riley muttered, her grimace evident even in her voice. “That’s just unbelievable.”
“Why so?” Zane asked her, raising a brow. “Why is that so unbelievable… what’s your name?”
“Riley,” she replied. “Because she’s not your type.”
“And what is my type?” Zane asked.
