Even now, he managed to make my heart skip a beat.

Then I froze. Could he hear it over the phone?

“Everything okay, love? Your heart just started racing as if you’re afraid.”

I took a deep breath. “I’m fine, Zane. The two of you insist that I shouldn’t be afraid of you, so I am going to cut the call right now and there won’t be any consequences for it.”

Zane chuckled. “Go ahead. I don’t want you to talk to me out of fear.”

“Good, then. Bye.”

I hung up the call without letting him respond.

I lay back in my bed and closed my eyes, covering my burning face with my hands. I had no idea what would happen next. But whatever it was, I would deal with it tomorrow.

-LIA’S POV-

For the rest of the day, no one disturbed me. There were no calls, and no one showed up in my bedroom. I did receive a few text messages from Zane, Blake and Christy, asking for updates. on how I was doing and if I felt any better. I ignored the boys. and only responded to Christy, reassuring her that I was fine.

The day passed by quickly and fortunately uneventful.

But then the night approached, and expecting to go through it without either of them getting on my last nerve was too much to ask for.

Blake had already shown up the previous day, so now it was Zane’s turn to come scare me.

I was fast asleep, when I heard a knock on the window. The events of the previous day had made me jumpy enough to wake up at the smallest of sounds. Feeling utterly groggy, I walked up to it and glanced out, to find Zane staring up at me. He waved, offering me a smile.

I swallowed, contemplating what to do. I thought of going back to sleep, but I didn’t know what he was capable of. If it were Blake, maybe ignoring him would be the answer. But Zane had broken into my bedroom multiple times before, and now that I knew what he was, I also knew that he’d even shown as a wolf once.

So I had no choice other than to open the window for him, not wanting him to break it. I didn’t know how many broken doors and windows I could explain to my parents before they’d catch on.

I went and stood at the furthest corner from the window, not wanting him anywhere close to me.

But my unease and fear abated slightly the second he jumped into my room, carrying a bouquet of flowers and a box.

I frowned, staring at the things in his hands.

“You can come closer, I don’t bite for no reason, Lia.”

I swallowed, then took a couple of steps towards him.

“What is this?”

“Flowers, obviously.” He extended the bouquet towards me. I stared at it, hesitant. “Love, do you think tiny baby wolves will jump out of this?”

I took it from him, holding it close to my chest.

“Good girl. And this is for you.” He opened the box and showed me what was inside.

There was a get well soon calaineide

In spite of knowing the truth about him, my heart still warmed in my chest.

Thanks,” Iiddly.

“You’re welcome.” He closed the box and placed it on my side table, “Comes Mal yourself at home,” head, plopping down on my bed as ifit was his.

I frowned. Get all my bed. Youll brakit.”

Ease scowled. How much do you think I weigh

“A lot. Since you’re hiding a gigantic animal inside you.”

He smiled in amorement. “It’s not inside me”

“It’s the same thing.” I rolled my eyes.

He sat up properly, his gase softening. “Are you doing okay, Lis? You seem better than yesterday. Less frightened. Although you’re still maintaining a large distance. “Can you blama maladeed.

Heshook his head. Im not blaming you. I jot donation.”

I sniffed, tucking my hair behind my ear. “Why are you here,

Zane?”

He stood up from the bed, immediately making me and the room feel smaller. I instinctively took a step back.

“I came to see you. To see how you’re doing. I know that this is really hard on you, Lia. Being the only one to know a secret. A secret you cannot share with the people you’re close to under any circumstance.”

That wasn’t just an empathetic statement. Zane was reminding me of the promise I’d made to him.

“I know I’m not supposed to tell anyone, Zane. You don’t have to constantly worry and keep showing up to my bedroom to intimidate me.”

He raised a brow. “Intimidate you?”

“Yes. Why else would you keep coming here?”

He took a step closer to me, but this time I held my ground. Even if my body begged me to step back.

“I’ve been coming here since before you knew about what I am, Lia. It was never to scare you. If that was the scare you. If that was the case, don’t you think I would’ve been doing this for the last ten years? When all my friends wanted was to frighten you?”

“I don’t know what you want,” I said honestly. “I don’t understand any of this.”

“I know,” he said softly, now almost closing the space between us. “I know this is very complicated, love. But you can trust me. I am with you every step of the way.”

I shook my head, frowning up at him.

“No, Zane. I don’t want you to be with me. You or Blake. I want you guys to just forget about me. Why can’t you do that?” I asked.

“I don’t understand why you’d want that, Lia. Especially after I saved your life.”

-LIA’S POV-

I lowered my gaze. “Thank you for that. But…” I trailed off.

“Can I touch you?” he asked, making my eyes shoot up to him.

“What? No.”

“Just for a second. You do it.” He extended his hand towards me, and I quickly backed away from it.

“It’s just a normal hand, Lia. No claws.”

“But you could make them come out, right?” I asked, staring at it.

“You want me to show you?” he asked softly.

“No,” I said at once.

Zane looked amused. “Are you sure?”

I stared at his hand for a moment longer, then met his gaze. “Okay fine. Show me. But stay there. Don’t take a single step closer.”

“Okay. Relax.”

I glanced down at his hand, and very slowly, the tips of his fingers started to darken, his nails slowly becoming black. I held my breath as they sharpened to points, and grew longer and

Heat spread through my body, my heart giving loud thumps of pleasure in my chest.

He withdrew his hand from my neck and cupped my cheeks. I was still pressed against the wall, in the corner of the room, so there was much I could do to escape him. And in all honesty, I wasn’t even sure I wanted to.

“You will never regret placing your trust in me, Lia Snow. That is my promise to you. I know how to protect you, how to keep you safe. And I will do that until my last waking moment.”

I blinked up at him, taking in his features. The dark blue of his eyes and the thick curtains of black eyelashes framing it. His dark hair that was somehow always perfectly messy. The plumpness of his lips, and the silent yet pressing invitation they kept sending to mine.

“Why?” I whispered. “Why do you want to protect me? What do you want to protect me from, Zane?”

“Everything. Humans. Werewolves. Yourself. And myself.”

“Why would I need protection from you and me?”

“You’re too fragile, Lia. I fear if I’m not careful, I’ll end up hurting you.” His eyes were filled with a raw emotion I hadn’t seen in them before. “I didn’t ask for this, Lia. I waited years for you. But I didn’t think you’d be… human. I didn’t think you’d be you. The tiny girl my Hounds like to play with.”

“What am I, Zane? To you? To Blake? I know there’s something For both aren’t telling me. What is it? I can take it,” I 11:25 tried.
