They never expected her to betray them so quickly, shoving them deeper into hell.
The only thing Jenn was grateful for was that she never told Mathilda about the old woman’s help otherwise, that kind soul would’ve suffered too.
“Sharon…”
Jenn hated Mathilda.
Hated her so much she wanted to tear her apart, devour her, drink her blood.
Jenn’s heart ached for Sharon-ached so badly it was suffocating.
Her own body may have been filthy, covered in wounds and bruises, but at least she still had a chance to see the light of day again.
But Sharon… Sharon would never see another sunrise.
Years of torment had already left Jenn frail and broken. Now, with her chest flooded by unbearable grief and fury, her body suddenly seized-and she collapsed, unmoving.
Watching her fall, Lily’s heart sank as well.
Sharon’s bones lay right there in the Xander family’s basement. Ben and Jerry couldn’t deny it. All they could do was wail and beg for mercy, their sobs ringing with hollow regret.
But crocodile tears don’t deserve sympathy.
Those two monsters, the other men in the village who had imprisoned innocent girls, and the traffickers who brought them here-they all deserved to face justice, harsh and absolute.
Lily had gone through too much. She was exhausted, both body and mind.
But worry for Jenn-and for the other innocent girls still trapped in the village-kept her from closing her eyes.
Not until she was certain Jenn was safe, and that every girl would be rescued, did she finally allow herself to drift off into sleep…
When she woke again, it was already the following night.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she heard Grace’s voice, thick with concern and pain.
“Lily, you’re finally awake.”
“You silly girl. You’re pregnant-why didn’t you tell the family?”
“You’re carrying a child, and James still forced you into a divorce… What kind of heartless bastard does that?”
Then came Ivan’s voice: “Yeah, my brother was completely out of line.”
“But he knows he messed up. Do you want to get back together with him?”
Lily instinctively placed a hand on her still-flat belly.
She hadn’t expected the Luke family to find out about her pregnancy.
She met James’s eyes-and suddenly remembered what he’d said before.
He didn’t want children.
If a woman got pregnant with his child, he’d get rid of it.
The thought of him coldly “handling” the baby in her belly sent a shiver down her spine.
He didn’t like women. And he couldn’t accept this child. Lily would never try to guilt him into staying or force him into a marriage.
She quickly looked away and murmured, “I think things are fine the way they are now…”
“Hey…”
Lily had said it gently.
But Ivan could hear it-she didn’t want to reconcile.
He opened his mouth to say more, panicked, but Grace cut him off with a sharp pinch.
Under his grandmother’s glare, he realized pushing Lily to forgive James-after everything-really was asking too much.
Nancy shot her younger son a disapproving glance, then turned and glared at James.
But when she looked at Lily again, her face softened with warmth and tenderness.
“Lily, don’t listen to this foolish boy.”
“You’ll always be my daughter. No matter what you decide, I’ll support you.”
“I have a strong feeling this wasn’t some random act by traffickers. I’ll have James investigate and dig up the truth. We’ll find out who was behind it and make them pay.”
“And as for James… that stupid brat doesn’t know how to cherish anything. He’s not good enough for you!”
“Exactly! He’s not even good enough to shine Lily’s shoes!” Grace chimed in, fully backing her daughter- in-law.
Henry had nearly lost his mind when he got the news about Lily’s kidnapping.
Now that both she and his great-grandchild were safe, his mood had shifted into pure delight.
James had confessed to developing feelings for Lily-so of course Henry hoped the two of them could stay together and raise the baby as a family.
But the things James had done…
What kind of sane man tries to find a new partner for his own wife?
If he were Lily, he wouldn’t forgive James either.
He gave his grandson a withering glare, then turned to Lily with a gentle voice.
“James acted like a complete fool.”
“Lily, focus on getting better. Ignore him. If he ever upsets you again, just tell me-I’ll break his legs myself.”
Blanc spoke coldly, “Yeah. We’ll break the little punk’s legs.
Lily still couldn’t forget that James had once wanted to get rid of their child. That wound was real. But if he hadn’t shown up when he did-if he hadn’t saved her-she and this baby wouldn’t be here now. Truthfully, he didn’t owe her anything. And she couldn’t bear to watch the family scold him so harshly.
She said honestly, “I’m safe now all thanks to James. He really was great. He didn’t make things hard for me at all.”
“Hmph!”
Henry let out a cold snort in James’s direction. “You’re carrying his child. Of course he should be protecting you-what, does he want applause for doing the bare minimum?”
“Lily!”
Just as Henry was about to throw in a few more jabs at James, Dennis and Zoey rushed into the hospital room with their son and daughter-in-law.
“Lily, you’ve suffered so much…”
When Zoey noticed the cuts and scrapes on Lily’s delicate, pale hand, tears welled up in her eyes.
“Grandma, I’m fine,” Lily said quying to comfort her.
“I’d just been trafficked when James found me. I didn’t suffer. I wasn’t hurt. Please don’t cry.”
“Lily…”
Zoey had already spoken with the doctor.
While Lily didn’t have any major visible injuries, she did have bruises on her lower back and abdomen. Clearly, someone had beaten her.
She was also showing signs of a threatened miscarriage-she’d need to rest and recover carefully.
How could she say she hadn’t suffered? She was just trying to spare them the pain.
Zoey’s heart ached-aching that Lily had endured so much while pregnant, aching even more that she was still so thoughtful and mature. She pulled Lily into a tight embrace.
“Enough tears,” Dennis said gently, kneeling beside her. “The doctor said Lily needs to stay calm and happy for the baby. If you cry like this, it’ll upset her.”
“Yes! I’m going to be a great-grandmother!”
Honestly, Zoey had already come to terms with the fact that her sons were probably never getting married or having kids.
Now that Lily was pregnant, she couldn’t have been more thrilled.
She wiped her tears, beaming, and waved her hands excitedly. “When my great-granddaughter’s born, I’m taking her to the mall with me!”
