“Really? How sure are you? Do you have proof?” Isabella asked coldly, clearly annoyed by Betsey’s accusation.
Betsey immediately turned to the waitress beside her and said, “What are you waiting for? This woman is hiding my earrings. Frisk her. How can you allow people like her to come here? Are you not afraid that every belonging will be stolen?”
The crowd looked at Isabella with disgust and contempt. They couldn’t believe there was a thief in this upscale restaurant. They quickly checked their belongings, making sure nothing was missing.
The waitress stepped forward with a complicated expression. She glanced at Andrew cautiously. Betsey noticed this and couldn’t help glancing at Andrew too. His strikingly handsome face made her heart race. His identity seemed extraordinary. That detestable woman was lucky to have hooked such a charming man.
“Did you think you could just take them because there are no surveillance cameras in the restroom? If you return them now, I can forgive this incident and let you go. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being harsh,” Betsey said, looking at Isabella arrogantly.
“I don’t even know what your earrings look like. Your accusation is baseless,” Isabella said with a sneer.
Betsey took out a photo. “These are my earrings! They are limited edition and cost over half a million dollars. It’s enough to keep you behind bars for a long time.” Isabella glanced at the photo and was utterly speechless. This pair of earrings was one of the pieces she had sent to Betsey. At that time, Betsey had said she had never had any jewelry and begged her to send her some.
Isabella thought Betsey was a simple and kind-hearted person who grew up in the countryside. She didn’t expect Betsey to figure out the value of everything she had sent. Anger surged in her heart; she felt like her kindness had been wasted. Since Betsey insisted on causing trouble, she would play along.
She asked nonchalantly, “Oh, these earrings are yours?”
Betsey was stunned for a moment. She looked at Isabella with a complicated expression and retorted, “How dare you use such a lame excuse to prove your innocence? It does not change the fact that you are a thief.”
“Since you are claiming they are yours, can you show us proof of purchase?” Isabella looked at Betsey.
“How can I have proof of purchase? It was a gift from a friend,” Betsey countered, crossing her arms across her chest. She remained unfazed.
“Since it was bought by your friend, that friend of yours should have the proof of purchase, right? Otherwise, we will all think you are just bluffing.”
As she spoke, Isabella looked Betsey up and down disdainfully. It was only now that the crowd noticed Betsey’s outfit. Although she wore designer clothes, they were only worth tens of thousands of dollars. How could someone dressed like this afford earrings worth more than half a million?
“Is this woman a fraud? I am familiar with almost all the wealthy young ladies in Ansport, but I don’t recognize her.”
“I already found the situation strange from the start. Judging from her outfit, I don’t think she can afford earrings worth more than half a million. Maybe she can only buy a knockoff.”
“Could it be that she is accusing someone else to hide her own guilt?”
When Betsey heard the crowd’s discussions, her face instantly turned red with shame. She said through clenched teeth, “Who says I can’t provide proof? I’ll call my friend now.”
“But what will you do if I can provide proof of purchase?” Isabella replied unhesitatingly.
Betsey’s eyes lit up. At the thought that she could get one million dollars, she quickly pulled out her phone and messaged her benefactor.
“Madam, do you remember the earrings you gave me before? Some people are claiming they are fake. I’m really furious. How can someone as classy as you use fakes? Do you have the receipt when you bought these earrings? I want to shut them up.”
After Betsey sent the message, Isabella’s phone on the table chimed.
However, Betsey was so focused on waiting for a reply that she didn’t notice it. After a few minutes, there was still no response. Betsey became so impatient that she decided to call her benefactor.
A Failed Scheme Backfired
As soon as Betsey called her benefactor’s number, Isabella’s phone on the table rang. Betsey glanced at Isabella suspiciously, thinking it was a strange coincidence. However, she didn’t have time to ponder why Isabella’s phone coincidentally rang when she made a call. After all, she was anxiously waiting for her benefactor to answer.
Isabella picked up her phone from the table and set it to silent mode. Then, she opened the message, which was from Betsey. A cold smile appeared on her beautiful face.
She replied, “Are you referring to one of the jewelry pieces I gave you? What I gave you were just ordinary trinkets. They were neither real nor fake.”
Betsey quickly replied, “The pair of earrings is an FSZ limited edition.”
“Really? I don’t remember buying any of their limited editions. Actually, I gave you the jewelry to make you happy, not for you to show off.”
Betsey froze when she saw this reply. How could it be? All this time, she thought the earrings were real.
“We’ve been waiting for a long time. Can you really show proof? If you can’t, just admit it,” Isabella said, bringing Betsey back to her senses.
“I can! It’s just that it’s been so long. Even if my friend has the receipt, she might have already misplaced it. It takes time to find it,” Betsey tried her best to maintain her arrogant and domineering demeanor to hide her uneasiness, especially now that her benefactor couldn’t help her prove the authenticity of the earrings. She believed the people around would think her reasoning made sense. After all, it had been a long time, and her friend could have easily lost the receipt.
“That’s too bad, then. But I still have my proof of purchase.”
After saying this, Isabella showed her phone to Betsey. Sure enough, it was a receipt of payment for the earrings worth five hundred and twenty thousand dollars. The string of numbers stunned Betsey. She subconsciously stepped back, her body trembling slightly. This shop assistant had actually spent that much money on earrings? Unbelievable!
A voice suddenly sounded behind them. “We found the earrings in the restroom!”
A waitress came out of the restroom and rushed towards them with a pair of exquisite earrings in her hand. They were exactly the ones Betsey had lost.
Betsey’s heart sank when she saw the earrings. She had hidden them well, planning to retrieve them after dinner. She didn’t expect the waitress to find them.
Isabella turned to look at Andrew. When she saw the faint smile on his face, she immediately understood what was going on.
“Give them to me,” Isabella said, extending her hand. When the waitress placed the earrings in her palm, Betsey immediately tried to snatch them back. “Those are my earrings!”
However, Isabella quickly clenched her fist, leaving Betsey grasping at air.
She looked at Betsey coldly, raised an eyebrow, and said firmly, “Can you show your proof that they are yours? I have already shown my proof of purchase. Right? How can you still claim they are yours? You are so ridiculous!”
Many people had seen Isabella’s proof of purchase moments ago. They couldn’t help but comment on Betsey’s cunning behavior.
“This woman is so vicious! How dare she claim earrings worth half a million as hers!”
“How pathetic! Look at her. She looks poor but still tries to climb up the social ladder.”
“I don’t believe the earrings are hers.”
Betsey heard the crowd’s disdainful ridicule. She felt so embarrassed that she wished the floor would crack and swallow her alive.
How could things end up this way? The earrings were hers, but Isabella took them away. Worse still, she couldn’t prove they were hers, and everyone was siding with Isabella.
“You wretch! Those earrings are mine! Give them back to me!” Betsey shrieked, lunging forward to grab Isabella’s hand.
But Isabella moved sideways to dodge, causing Betsey to fall into a chair. Her nose hit the back of the chair and instantly bled.
The crowd looked at her with complicated expressions.
“Throw her out,” Andrew commanded in an oppressive voice.
The waiters were about to move when Levi quickly stepped forward and pulled Betsey up. Then, he looked at Andrew and smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry. I’ll take her away now.”
While dragging Betsey out of the restaurant, Levi took a deep breath. He thought Betsey could successfully embarrass Isabella, so he just watched from the side, waiting for Andrew to embarrass himself. Who would have thought that they would be the ones to be humiliated?
At the thought of this, he was so angry that he snapped, “You idiot! How can you be so stupid?”
Tears welled up in Betsey’s eyes. She looked at Levi aggrievedly and retorted, “But those earrings are really mine. You know it too! Why didn’t you speak up for me?”
“They’re yours? Where’s your proof? You can’t show a receipt. That woman showed her receipt in front of everyone. Who do you think people would believe if I intervened?”
Betsey was at a loss for words. Indeed, who would believe her words without any proof? She didn’t even have a strong family background. Her earrings, worth half a million, had been snatched by that despicable woman just like that.
She was used to scheming against people. In fact, she had done it countless times, but this was the first time someone had schemed against her and succeeded. She couldn’t accept it. Bursting into tears, she took out her phone and texted her benefactor. “Madam, I was bullied. That woman went too far!”
In the restaurant, the crowd had dispersed as Betsey was taken away. Isabella looked at the earrings in her hand before finally putting them in her bag.
Seeing this, Andrew asked, “Do you still want them? Why don’t I just buy you a new pair?” His implication was clear; the earrings had been worn by Betsey, so they were already dirty.
“Don’t worry, I will wear these. I’ll just sell them and donate the money to the children in poor villages,” Isabella replied calmly.
The dim, warm yellow light shone on her, creating a halo around her head and making her glow. Andrew looked at her quietly, and his throat tightened. He let out a low hum in response.
Betsey Crossed The Line
That evening, when Isabella arrived back home, Elaine and Glenn eagerly asked her what she would like for her birthday. Not having any particular wishes or ideas in mind, Isabella shrugged and let them decide.
“I’ll invite your brothers to your birthday party. Tell me if there’s anyone else you’d like to join us,” Elaine said, her enthusiasm lighting up her face.
