I raised my head and looked at Sara and Nolan. The expressions of curiosity could be seen in both of their eyes.
After taking a few deep breaths and sitting up, I then proceeded to say,
“Look, you both are aware of how my best friend cheated on me.” Following her, I began to have trust issues with both her and other people. On the other hand, after spending so many days with you two, I came to the conclusion that you are my closest friends and that you will never betray me. So I can share my secret with you.”
My statements appeared to fill them with amazement. With a smile on their faces, they gave a confident nod of their heads.
I felt relaxed and let out a lower tone.
“I am Alpha Bryan’s mate.”
Their eyes widened, and their smiles began to fade away.
Sara could not help but stutter.”Y-You are the Luna of this pack?”
“Luna?” I scoffed when I heard Sara.
They had not yet recovered from their state of shock. They could not believe that they were sitting with the mate of their head Alpha.It was a blessing from the perspective of the outer world. Regarding me, however, it was a nightmare.
Because of this mate bond, I was forced to endure a great deal of humiliation. My brother came dangerously close to losing his job. I had to live like this.”Sophia, are you telling us the truth? Are you his mate? Do you know how big it is? Oh my goodness! It’s hard for me to believe that he called off his engagement to his girlfriend because of you!” Sara said while shaking her head.
I felt embarrassed. It was true that because of me, he had to cancel it. I assumed that Mila’s parents might have been the ones who revoked their consent to this relationship.
“Hey! Why are you looking upset? I am not saying that he did something wrong. He did the right thing. Because of his mate, he rejected another woman. So kind of him to do that!” In a jovial tone, Sara expressed her thoughts.
Nolan frowned as if he was thinking about something. He glanced at me and asked,
“If he canceled that because of you, then why are you both trying to hide the bond in front of other people? Have you made any plans to disclose it at a later time, when all of the rumors around his engagement will have died down?”
I shook my head. “Never.”
Sara held my hand. “What do you mean by never?”
“He doesn’t want me,” I mumbled.
Hearing me caused Sara to let out a gasp. “What are you saying? Why does he not want you? Is it because of Bruce?”
I eventually came to the realization that I had almost forgotten that he was Bruce’s older brother when I was talking about him to them.
“Maybe. But it will be impossible for me to be with him as well. How can I even think like that? It can’t be a lie that he is my ex-boyfriend’s big brother, whom I used to address as big brother-in-law. It sounds funny, but my fate betrayed me,” I elaborated to them about what was going through my mind.
Nolan got to his feet and drew the chair closer to mine so that he could sit next to me for the purpose of preventing other people from overhearing our chat. In order to better hear him, Sara moved closer to me as well.
“Listen to me, Sophia. It is against the rules for the leader of our pack, the Alpha, to turn down his mate. You are destined to be together. It is impossible for him to resist the mate bond that exists between the two of you, even if he claims that he does not desire you and even if he wants another woman. I also have a mate, I know the feelings. There are two options. Reject or accept. As the head Alpha of this pack, he has no choice but to accept you, regardless of whether it is right now or in the future.”
As soon as I heard Nolan, a collection of peculiar feelings swept through my mind. Exactly what he was trying to convey was clear to me.
But how could I really suppose that man would want to accept me? How could I keep up with him?
“That was why he dropped you at my home that night. It’s clear that he cares for you. Otherwise, he could have left you anywhere,” Sara said while thinking about her birthday night.
I turned to her. “He cares for me? Do you even know what he said to me today? He said I was not capable of obtaining employment with his company in any way. He always behaves so arrogantly.”
Sara chuckled at me. “But still, he gives you a job that you have never thought of. His assistant secretary! Imagine, one day you will get a promotion and become his personal secretary. Wow, what will happen after that!”
As Sara began to think about Bryan and me, she placed her chin on her palm and began to daydream.
Nolan hit her head lightly. “Stop overthinking and try to understand her. That man does not treat her in a good manner.”
“Oh please, Nolan. What do you expect from him? Since Sophia was his brother’s girlfriend, it is only natural that he would have experienced a sense of unease. But now she and Bruce are no longer involved with one another. So there is a bright future waiting for Sophia.”
I facepalmed myself. “Sara, nothing can be possible between us.”
“Remember my words. He will try to stay close to you. Then you will tell me that I was right.” Sara said and stood up.
“Where are you going?” Nolan asked her. I also looked at her to get the answer.
She grinned at us as if something was going on in her head.
“I am coming back in a minute. I forgot something in the locker,” she replied and left the canteen.
Nolan looked at me and said, “I didn’t know that so many things were happening in your life.”
“I tried to forget these things. But everything was coming back to me that I could not control and tell you both everything.”
“As you should.”
I nodded my head and waited for Sara.
“Sophia, if he treats you badly, tell me. I know I am nowhere close to his rank, but as your friend, I can at least confront him.”
I felt warm in my heart. I missed my brother after hearing him. Abraham reacted like that when he heard about my mate bond. He might be thinking that I was happy in my life since Bryan did not talk to him about me again.
“What if he gets to know about my job? Is he going to back me up, or will he oppose me?”
A brown paper bag appeared in front of my eyes. Sara came with a brown clothing paper bag. I looked at her and asked,
“What is it?”
“It’s your man’s thing. Look into it.”
Her words left me confused, so I looked into the bag to see what was inside. While I was bending my head to peek inside, I discovered a black suit jacket that was made of a soft material. Bryan’s scent still lingered on it.
“I forgot to give it back to you when you left my house. The moment I laid eyes on it today, I grabbed it and brought it with me so that you might return it to him today. Who knows? You will be close to him from now on.”
“That’s nothing, Sar “
Sara interrupted me by saying,”Oh, come on. This can be the beginning of a new chapter between the two of you.”
“You’ve got the job! Congratulations, my dear.” My mother hugged me.
After talking with my friends, I went directly back to my home. So when I told my mother about the job, she appreciated me.I could not put into words how delighted I was. My mother was proud of me. I assumed she would warn me about others again. But because of Alpha Bryan, she was responding so calmly. She believed in the possession of the head Alpha; no one could do anything to me. So, she did not have any worries about my safety.
“Does your brother know? Let me call him,” she replied, going to grab her phone, but I grasped her hand.”Mom, don’t tell brother anything now.”
“Why?”
“I will tell him later.”
“Why not now?”
“He must be busy. I don’t want him to know about it right now. He will surely speak with Alpha about it. I don’t want anyone to treat me differently.”
She flashed me a proud smile. She cupped my face and said,
“I am grateful to have children like you and your brother. You both never let me do anything. You both are sensible children.”
My mother made my favorite foods for lunch and dinner to cheer me up.
We missed my brother during our meals. It was about only six months. Because after that, he would return to us.
I only prayed that the following six months would pass quickly.
After dinner, I returned to my room to sleep. Even though I made it to my bed, I did not get any sleep. I set up some alarms on my phone and stared at the ceiling for a while.
I turned my focus to the brown paper bag placed on the couch next to my bed.
I shook my head, forcing myself to close my eyes.
I had no idea when I fell asleep because when I awoke, it was early morning. An alarm went off, waking me up.
I slipped my right hand out of the blanket and went for the nightstand. I grabbed my phone and turned off my alarm.
I sat up and yawned. I looked outside the window. I could hear birds chirp from there.
I grinned and told myself, “Let’s start a new day.”
I took a shower before changing into a long green dress. It was simple, but it did not meet the standards of the office.
However, I did not have many formal outfits to wear to the office. I would need to buy clothes shortly.
I put my hair in a high ponytail and wore high heels. Yesterday, I observed other women wearing heels, so I decided to wear black heels today.
I was about to leave my room when my gaze landed on the brown bag. I rushed over and grabbed it.
“How can I forget it?”
I left my bedroom and went downstairs. Inside the kitchen, I noticed my mother preparing food.
