Trying to lip-read, I watch him for a while. He breaks our staring contest to watch someone jogging over to him with something in their hands.

He takes the items from the guy, smiling and thanking him.

He jogs over to the sideline, but keeps going. Oh god, he’s not coming over here, is he? Yep, he’s coming over. I see Travis watching him jog over and shift my gaze back to Knox.

“OH MY GOD, he’s coming over our way! SHIT! How do I look?” The girls behind me start to primp and preen as Knox heads in our direction. Desperate much?

He reaches us amid the screams of the girls, “Hey Knox!” “Knox! We love you!” You get the picture. Surprisingly, he ignores them, never breaking eye contact with me.

I start to feel butterflies in my stomach.

What the?

It’s just Knox, Alex!

Relax. This is definitely the alcohol talking.

“Here, baby doll! Put this on. Here, Andy,” he hands us two jerseys. I hold mine up and see the number 13-that’s his number-and turn it around to see Carter written on the back.

I gently set it back down, looking up to see him grinning at me. I’d always worn his jersey, having been born on the thirteenth of July.

I used to pretend it was my birthday jersey, and I’d always wanted one that bore the name Thompson on the back.

I know, it sounds silly, doesn’t it?

“Put it on, baby doll,” he says, his grin widening. I pull it over my head, and Andy gasps.

“Oh my God! Alex, look up!” I glance up to see that I’m on the massive stadium screen with Knox. Damn! Now everyone watching this game knows I’m acquainted with Knox.

Embarrassed, I cover my face with my hands, and Knox starts to laugh. I part my fingers to shoot him a glare. He just stands there, smiling at me.

My heart starts to race a little. I’m not comfortable with this feeling. I notice his cheeks turning a bit red, and he averts his gaze to the ground. What’s going on with him?

“See you guys later! I gotta go,” he waves at us and jogs back to his team. I find myself unable to tear my eyes away from the back of his body, the way everything moves in sync with each step he takes.

Stop checking him out, Alex!

You’re not like the other girls! STOP IT!

This needs to seriously stop. I should just go ahead and check out the other players on the field. Before I manage to tear my eyes away from him, he reaches his teammates and turns back around to give us one last look.

But his eyes don’t leave mine until he breaks contact and focuses on his teammates.

What was in that champagne? Am I hallucinating?

I need to slow down on the alcohol!

The halftime score is twenty-three to twenty-one in favor of the Giants. I honestly don’t have a clue what’s going on in the game. But I know that it’s a close game! I should learn, shouldn’t I?

Andy is too busy checking out all the guys on the field and shamelessly flirting with my brother, who’s reciprocating with equal enthusiasm. Kill. Me. Now!

Tyson is on the team too, but he’s currently recovering from a knee injury, so he’s out for the rest of the season.

If he were playing. I’d have Sam to sit next to, to gossip with, and to ogle at the players with. But instead, I’m sitting here, playing third wheel. They come back out onto the field after another commercial featuring Knox.

Aren’t people sick of looking at him?

The game ends with the Giants winning thirty-five to twenty-nine. The last ten minutes are a tense back-and-forth with not a single touchdown from either team. But everyone is on edge because they come close multiple times.

At times, my heart is in my mouth and my stomach is in knots, but I really enjoy the game! I would definitely watch another.

At the end of the game, Knox saunters back over to us, shirtless but still wearing his padding. Every girl in the stadium is eyeing him up like he’s a piece of meat, and he knows exactly what he’s doing.

He’s gripping the ends of a towel that’s draped across his shoulder. The towel hanging out of his pants is swaying, and I find myself hypnotized by it. Damn, he looks good!

Ok…

That’s the drunk Alex talking.

He’s stopped by a reporter, who starts asking him various questions that echo through the stadium speakers. Everyone stops what they’re doing to listen to him.

I’m in awe of how professional he is with the reporter, who is clearly flirting hard with him. I recognize her from ESPN, I think that’s where I know her from.

Finally finishing up the interview after ten minutes, she says, “That was an outstanding play, Knox! Probably one of your best. What made tonight’s game so different from the others?”

He laughs into the microphone and responds with surprising poise.

“Oh, you know, Rita, having my fans supporting me at every game helps a lot.

“But I have special people in the audience tonight, some of whom finally decided to come watch me play after all these years, so I wanted to show them what they were missing!” he jokes.

?

With that, he smiles at her and leaves the reporter to continue his journey over to us. Picking up a water bottle on the sideline, he reaches us.

“Hey, baby doll! Did you enjoy your first game?” He latches his hands onto the top of the fence and leaps up so he can sit on it, his legs dangling on either side.

Andy and Kyle are too engrossed in each other to notice he’s here. I nod and tell him, “It was actually fun! Watching sweaty hot guys running around,” I wink at him, and he rolls his eyes.
