Her brows raised. “What kind of surprise?”
I kissed her forehead, slow and sure, then tugged her gently toward the doors. “The kind that means we’re not staying here.”
And without another word, I led her out into the night.
-LIA’S POV-
“Where exactly are we going?” I asked for the third time as Zane led me through the forest, his loud heartbeat increasing my curiosity.
“Like I said, love, you’ll see.”
The same reply again.
“You got me out of a really cool party for this,” I teased. “It better be something incredible, Zane Adams.”
Zane stopped walking, turning to me with his eyes narrowed.
“What did you say?” he whispered, grabbing me by the waist and pulling me to his chest.
“What?” I chuckled.
He spun us around, gently pushing me against a tree, leaning closer. “My Little Lia, even if I brought you out here to simply romance you in the dark,” his free hand took a rough hold of my chin, “you should be happy to spend time alone with me.”
I raised a brow, biting my lip to hide my smile. “And why would that be?” everything else.” me over
His lips met mine, and I immediately kissed him back, my hands resting on his shoulders.
Somehow, even after a year of being with him, butterflies still fluttered in my stomach whenever he got too close.
He pulled away after a long moment, his eyes darker than the forest. “Is that understood?”
“Yes,” I whispered. “Understood.”
“Good.” He planted a kiss onto my cheek, then moved away from the tree, tugging me with him. “Just kidding. I promise this is better than the party.”
I laughed, my heart warming. “You’ve turned into such a softie, Zane.”
“Is that bad? Would you rather I be-“
“Don’t,” I cut him off, shooting him a playful glare. “Not that joke.”
“Fine,” he rolled his eyes, then flashed me that smile which made my insides melt. “We’re almost here.”
We walked a little further, and then he stopped before a curtain of hanging vines. Fairylights were strung across them, glimmering a gentle gold, like fireflies floating mid-air.
“What’s all this?” I asked, my stomach flipping with excitement now.
“Just a moment longer.”
He stepped in front of me and took both my hands, slowly backing away into the curtain.
I couldn’t contain my smile as I walked forward through the vines, goosebumps covering my skin.
We entered a clearing, and Zane finally moved beside me to reveal a beautiful house standing in the middle of the forest, carved of what looked like hardwood, with a beautiful river at its front.
I gaped, glancing from the house to Zane, my mind blown. “How on earth did you manage this?” I asked. “Zane, it’s beautiful and impossible. What is this?”
It wasn’t even a cosy, small cottage, but a proper modern house with glass windows and lighting inside.
Only Zane Adams could get something like this built in the middle of a forest, without letting anyone find out, and in so little time.
Zane laughed. “Do you like it?”
“I love it, but how?” I asked.
“Magic.” He leaned in and kissed me again, before taking my wrist and pulling me towards it. “It’s ours.”
I didn’t know what to say after, so I did the only thing I could.
I smiled from ear to ear with tears in my eyes, gazing at Zane instead of the house he’d built.
Even after a year together, it was beyond me.
It was beyond me how the man I used to be afraid of, the man who made me shiver just by his presence, could fill me with so much warmth and comfort every time he stepped into a room.
Zane was right.
It was magic.
He was magic.
We walked up the steps and he opened the door for me, giving a bow and gesturing me inside.
“After you, my lady.”
I giggled, stepping inside.
My breath caught.
The place felt like it was floating in the trees, with massive glass walls erasing the line between indoors and outdoors. The warm glow of the lights bounced off sleek wood and stone details, and every corner felt impossibly open yet inviting.
For a moment, I stood there, looking around, and then at Zane.
“It’s perfect,” I whispered, and a tear slipped from my eye.
“Hey,” Zane whined, stepping closer and brushing it away. “No. crying. I didn’t bring you here to cry.”
I sniffed, staring up at him. “This is amazing, Zane. Why did you do this? What’s the occasion?”
He answered my question with a long, gentle kiss, and as soon as he pulled away, he dropped to one knee.
My eyes widened.
“Zane,” I whispered, heart hammering so loud the whole forest would hear.
“Lia Snow,” he whispered, smiling. He took my hand in one of his, while the other fished for something in the pocket of his pants. My fingers tightened around his, free hand flying to my mouth so I wouldn’t scream. Or sob. Or both. He retrieved a black box from his jeans and flicked it open, revealing a gorgeous diamond ring glimmering inside. I squeezed my eyes shut, and Zane laughed. “Come on, it’s not so shiny that you’re unable to look at it.”
A choked laugh left my lips, and I opened my teary eyes, my trembling lips pressed together to hold in a cry.
“Lia Snow, do I need to say the words or can you take a hint?”
I laughed again, nodding. “You need to because I need to hear it. I can’t believe this otherwise.”
“What can’t you believe? Did you not know I would make you my wife someday?” He frowned.
“Someday. Not so soon. We’re not even out of high school yet.”
“We’re not getting married tomorrow,” he chuckled. “But I’d rather have you as my fiance too, than just my mate and girlfriend for the next five to six years.”
“I have to finish college. Build a career, other than being a Luna,” I whispered.
“And I will be beside you every step of the way. If you let me, of course. Otherwise, you’re gonna have to build your career while chained in my bedroom.”
I shook my head, smiling. “Only you could make that sound romantic.”
“Oh crap, I meant for it to be creepy.”
“Are you going to ask or not?” I almost shouted.
“Lia Snow, will you marry-“
“Yes!”
I jumped onto him, no hesitation, tackling him to the hardwood floor.
Zane laughed, snapping the box closed just before it flew out of his hand and fell on the ground a short distance away.
My lips crashed against his, fiery sparks erupting throughout my body, his arm tight around my waist.
Zane flipped us over a second later, deepening the kiss, hovering over me.
His free hand cradled my cheek, before his lips pulled away from mine to trail kisses along my jaw.
I gasped as he reached my mark, the vein instantly starting to pulse, aching for the press of his teeth.
“May I?” he murmured against my skin, making me sigh.
