Zane and the Hounds ste
Zane and the Hounds stepped out of the forest lining the road, bringing Jonathan with them.
Selene froze at once, even before she looked at him.
“You didn’t,” she whispered.
I stared at her, slowly lowering myself to the ground again.
I extended a hand towards Jonathan, and he taking it. up to me,
He glanced up at her, and I knew everyone present could hear the pounding of his heart.
“Selene,” he said, “come down here. I need to talk to you.”
She clenched her jaw, waving a hand, and a gust of wind sent the both of us flying back. I quickly pulled him in front of me so he fell on top of me, my back hitting the road.
“Lia,” he said, climbing off at once. “Are you okay?” He helped me sit up.
“I’m fine,” I groaned. “Werewolf and goddess.”
He sighed in relief, then scowled, glancing back at Selene.
He stood up and approached her, grabbing her ankle and pulling her down into his arms like she wasn’t the Moon Goddess.
My eyes widened.
“How dare y-” she growled, only for him to press a finger against her lips.
“Enough,” he scolded, his free arm tight around her waist. “It’s enough, Sel. You need to stop what you’re doing. It’s me who you’re mad at. So punish me. Not these people. Not our daughter.”
Selene stared at him, and for the first time, I saw raw p pain etching into her features.
Tears filled her eyes, and she tried to push him away, but failed.
She was strong enough to do it, physically speaking.
But this was emotional.
Her heart still ached for him. And only him.
I glanced at Zane.
He was staring at me already.

“How dare you step in front of me?” Selene asked, the previous edge missing in her voice. “After everything you did to me, you think you can come here and tell me what to do?”
“Yes,” he replied. “Because I’m still your husband. Your mate. The only man you’ll ever truly love. Look at my finger.”
Selene’s eyes flickered to his hand, and she gasped.
He still wore his wedding band. Even after all these years.
“I never stopped loving you either, Selene. Even when I hated you for all you did. Even when you thought I cheated on you.”
– Abandon
-LIA’S POV-
She tried to glare at him, but the emotion in her eyes wasn’t anger. It was pain.
“I thought? No, John, I know. You cheated on me with that human girl. You hated me for giving Lia away, so you did it for revenge. I smelled her all over you. On your skin, not just your clothes.”
John sighed. “She was nothing but a friend, Sel. I told you.”
“Then explain the scent,” she snapped, eyes glimmering. “Explain why you left right after, pretending it was because I gave Lia away. Why you didn’t even think I deserved a real explanation.”
“I didn’t cheat on you, whether you believe it or not. Lily called me, sobbing and terrified. She had been raped by her boyfriend. I rushed to her rescue and found her naked. So I gave her my shirt because I didn’t think to take a jacket in my hurry. She wore that and I took her home, waited for her to change and return it to me. Then I came to you, still wearing that. That’s how her scent was on my skin.”
Selene faltered, her lips trembling. “No,” she shook her head, “you’re lying. If that was the case, you would have told me then
But you didn’t. You left instead.”
“I left because I was mad,” John cried, pulling her closer. “And hurt. Because despite being a goddess, you still didn’t know me enough to trust me. Because even while being a goddess, you gave our child away, instead of doing everything in your power to keep her close and protect her. You didn’t love her like a daughter. You loved her like a creation.”
My heart tightened in my chest, and I clenched my jaw.
“You had no right to decide the entire course of her life, Selene. She was my daughter, not your damned experiment. It broke me. I was upset, and yes, I didn’t like this new side of you. But I couldn’t stop loving you. I just needed to get away from you because every time I looked at you, it reminded me of our daughter. Your refusal to trust me was the final straw. I decided I didn’t want to be with you anymore.”
Selene closed her eyes, like it pained her.
“I thought you’d… you’d just go back to the sky because that’s where you truly belonged. I realised I wasn’t strong enough to love a goddess. Your emotions weren’t in tune with mine, Sel. I did what I thought was best for both of us. Just like you did what you thought was best for Lia.”
Sobs left her lips now, her strong, angry front crumbling.
That’s when I saw it.
A girl. Broken and damaged.
It didn’t justify her actions.
It didn’t justify everything she did to me.
But I didn’t care. I wasn’t going to dwell on it as long as she left.
“John,” she rasped, now cupping his face in her shaking hands. The gleam of her eyes died down. “I gave Lia away so she’d have a normal life. A chance at true love. So she could find Zane, like I’d intended when I created her. My presence in her life would have attracted danger. I knew what I was doing, because I’d decreed it to be that way. I didn’t think it would affect you so terribly. Because I… all I ever needed was you.”
Her voice cracked, and she took in a breath to steady it.
“I was happy with just you. I didn’t need a child to fulfill me. And Lia would be fulfilled with her new family, so I thought everything would work out. But you grew distant. You refused to see it like I did. And I wanted to change it, to learn your ways, but then Lily happened. The betrayal shattered me, John. Completely. I jumped from man to man, to anyone who felt even slightly like you. And look where I ended up.”
John sniffed, wiping away her tears and cradling her face like it was sacred. “Selene. All of this is happening because you’re not where you belong. You’re meant to be a goddess. You’re meant to rule from the skies. Not get involved with human emotions. You’re above this, Sel. Meant to be with an immortal partner. Not someone like me, who will die and leave you in pain. Not someone like Dave either. You need to return to the skies.”
Her face hardened again.
“Oh. So you still don’t want me back. Do you have a family too?”
John shook his head. “You’re my family. And always will be. Even if I spend the rest of my life watching you in the sky. That’s where I thought you were this whole time. I didn’t know you’d stayed, Selene. I thought you’d gone back up. I used to talk to the moon every night, thinking you could hear me.”
She frowned. “What?”
“Yes,” he chuckled. “I thought you were listening.”
She stared at him, studying him carefully.
I could see it. Understanding. Realisation. It all reflected in her eyes.
I glanced at Zane, and gave him a nod.
-nnd forward
“Selene,” he said softly, and her eyes shot to him. “My entire life, I have worshipped you. Looked up to you. Loved you. All of us have, all your werewolves. And from the moment we’re grown enough to understand, we’re told stories of the Moon Goddess who shines her light on us. The Goddess who will find us in death and lead us home.”
His heart pounded, and I felt the urge to rush up to him, to pull him into my arms, but resisted.
“A few months ago, I died. But no one came to lead me out of the void. I was stuck in there until Lia reached out and commanded me back to life. But everyone else, all your other creations and disciples-they’ve been waiting for you the last seventeen years. While you’ve been here, hopelessly searching for true love. We’re the ones who love you, Selene. Without knowing you. Without ever speaking to you. We have faith in you. And those stuck in the void right now, I know that they still trust you’ll come. Please, Goddess,” he dropped to his knees, tears rolling down his cheeks, “don’t abandon them in the dark like you’ve been abandoned before.”
-LIA’S POV-
Selene walked up to Zane, her steps slow. She placed her hand on his head, and without hesitation, he rose to his feet, like her touch alone had commanded it. Her hand slid down to cup his cheek, tender and fragile, very unlike the terrifying goddess I’d fought against just a few days ago.
“I should have come for you in the void,” she whispered, her voice breaking with regret. “Forgive me, my child.”
My heart tightened a little.
Zane’s eyes closed, his jaw set, but he leaned into her hand anyway. He didn’t respond with a single word, only gave the faintest nod, which was more than enough.
Her gaze shifted back to John, softening like it was the first time she had seen him. She wasn’t divine in that moment, wasn’t radiant or scary. She was just a woman standing before the man she’d always loved. Her lips trembled. “If I go back… will you still talk to me every night?”
John broke into a sob now, shoulders shaking, arms opening wide. lad clinging to him desperately. “Can I still visit?” she asked, voice muffled against his chest. “Once a month. Just once.”
“Yes,” John choked out, nodding, his face buried in her hair. “Yes-if you don’t disturb the humans.”
“I won’t,” she promised instantly.
