I hum a little in understanding, considering this. Honestly, I see what Daniel means. Kent comes off as the comparatively easy father here.

Weâ??re quiet for a few moments before I speak again.

â??Daniel,â? I say quietly. â??Why didnâ??t you tell me about Gio?â?

He heaves a long sigh before glancing over at me, pressing his lips together, his face clearly reading are you really going to make me go into this?

And I give him a big grin and reach out to shove him lightly on the arm with just the tips of my fingers. â??Tell me!â? I demand, laughing. â??Iâ??m your wife! Iâ??m supposed to know all of your deep dark secrets.â?

â??I wasnâ??t trying to keep it a secret. I just donâ??t talk about it a lot becauseâ?¦â? Daniel sighs again and I roll my eyes a little at how dramatic he can be. â??Gio and Iâ?¦we didnâ??t leave things very well the last time that I was here.â?

â??Why not?â? I ask, sad for him and a deeply curious.

â??Because,â? he says again, hesitating and glancing at me. â??I kind ofâ?¦stole his girlfriend.â?

â??WHAT!?â? I burst out, sitting up straight and then bursting into laughter. â??Daniel, are you serious!?â?

He hunches over in his seat, laughing along with me and shaking his head, blushing a little. â??It was like five years ago!â?

â??What happened!?â?

â??It was stupid,â? he murmurs, rolling his eyes. â??I wasâ?¦jealous.â?

â??Of what?â? I gasp.

â??You donâ??t get it, Fay,â? he says, glancing over at me. â??Gio and I? We were inseparable as kids growing up. And then when we started getting older and he was interested in girls? I mean â?? very interested in girls, all he wanted to do was go out with girls, and talk about girls, and meet new girls. Suddenly I didnâ??t have Gio to myself anymore and I was so jealous â?? it felt like I lost my best friend. And he was really into this girl Violetta, and my reaction wasâ?¦â?

He grimaces here and I laugh again, able to interpret.

â??So you and Violetta?â? I say, raising my eyebrows at him. â??Was she the great love of your life before Jerome?â?

â??Obviously,â? Daniel says, rolling his eyes. â??No, we were a dumpster fire. I couldnâ??t bring myself to do more than kiss her.â?

â??Hmm,â? I say, blinking at him innocently. â??I wonder what thatâ??s likeâ?¦â?

Daniel shoots a glare at me, half apology half chagrin, and moves on with the story. â??As soon as I got her I didnâ??t want anything to do with her and I wasâ?¦not nice. But Gio wouldnâ??t take her back, and then I dumped her and Gio wouldnâ??t talk to me â?? so I went back to America and we didnâ??t talk for a long time. Unfortunately, her family isâ?¦connected to ours. So it caused a big stir.â? He sighs and shakes his head. â??I regret it, obviously.â?

â??Well, it seems like Gio is over it now,â? I say, hoping itâ??s true. â??He was really excited to see you.â?

â??I know,â? Daniel says, his eyebrows going up. â??I mean, I was really glad to see him. I hope he does forgive me, but we probably need to talk.â?

â??So,â? I say quietly. â??Gio doesnâ??t know that you like guys?â?

He sighs again, noncommittal, and I perk up again. â??What is this side of the story?â? I gasp, again intrigued.

â??He caught me, once,â? Daniel murmurs. â??But he never said anything â??â??

â??Oh my god,â? I say, leaning forward. â??Tell me everything.â?

â??Well, I would,â? Daniel says, slowing down the car. â??Butâ?¦we might have other things on our mind just now.â?

I spin in my seat to look through the windshield as Daniel presses the button on the top of the car to open the gate to our villa.

â??Oh god,â? I murmur, my fingers pressing lightly against my lips as the gate swings open and we start down the drive. â??I didnâ??t realize that we were home already.â?

â??Yup,â? Daniel says, a little humor in his voice. â??And as predicted, look whoâ??s here waiting for us.â?

And even though Danielâ??s right, that we were completely prepared for this and knew what was waiting for us hereâ?¦

The sight of Kent, standing in front of the house with his arms crossed tensely over his chest, glaring daggers at us as we make our way up the drive?

My stomach plummets all the way down and I donâ??t even blink – I canâ??t keep my eyes off of him.

Because I donâ??t think Iâ??ve ever seen Kent this pissed off.

â??All right, little wife,â? Daniel murmurs, his voice genuinely worried as he pulls the car to the front of the house and parks it. â??This is all you.â?

â??I take it back,â? I murmur, looking away from Kent as he glares at us, livid and unmoving from his place in front of the house. â??You do it. Iâ??m not used to scary Kent. You grew up with this! You have more experience!â?

â??Nope,â? Daniel says, smirking at me as he unbuckles his seatbelt. â??This was the deal.â? Daniel puts his hand on the door handle, ready to pull. â??You ready?â?

I unbuckle my own belt and sigh as I give Daniel one last look. â??Ready as Iâ??ll ever be. Letâ??s go.â?

And then, together, we step out of the car and I steel myself to face my second mafia don of the day.

â??Where the hell did you two go?â? Kent growls, not moving from his spot, though his words are full of enough rage that I have to work not to flinch away from him.

I mean, Iâ??m not scared of Kent anymore, but Iâ??m certainly reminded of why I used to be.

Still, I know how to handle this. So I turn to him with a soft smile and brush my hair behind my ears. â??Hey, Kent,â? I say, starting towards his side.

Kent puts a hand out, his palm flat towards me. â??Cut the shit, Fay,â? he growls, glaring at me. â??Talk. Now. Where the hell did you go?â?

I stop in my tracks, knowing not to push him. Daniel comes to my side and slips his hands into his pockets. â??We went to go see nonno, dad,â? he says, with a little sigh and a shrug, knowing exactly what the reaction is going to be to this.

Kentâ??s face goes pale and his expression drops along with his hand. â??Youâ?¦you what!?â?

â??Come on inside,â? Daniel says, starting towards the door, â??weâ??ll explain â??â??

But Kentâ??s there in a flash, grabbing Daniel by the front of his shirt and giving him a rough shake. â??What the fuck were you thinking, Daniel!?â? he shouts, his voice half terrified and half livid. â??You went â?? you went to â??â??

Kent drops Danielâ??s shirt suddenly and steps away with a groan, sinking his hands into his hair and turning away from us, muttering mournful words and shaking his head.

My eyes go a little wide, because I had expected him to be angry, but I hadnâ??t expected this.

â??Dad,â? Daniel says, taking a step towards him.

â??Youâ??re a fucking idiot, Daniel,â? Kent snarls, spinning to glare at his son, his expression again furious. â??You have no idea what and who youâ??re messing with here â?? you are completely out of your league â??â??

â??It was my idea, Kent,â? I say quietly, stepping between them. â??I did this, not Daniel.â?
