The one who claimed to be Lia’s birth mother.

She turned to me, and offered me a charming smile. “Finally,” she said, voice sounding eerily like Carol’s. “Come here, Dave. Look at the sky. It looks beautiful tonight.”

I blinked twice, and she was Carol again.

My heart shuddered.

She frowned.

“What’s wrong, my love?” she asked, stepping towards me.

I backed away. “Wait,” I said, raising a hand. “Wait.”

Her frown deepened. “It’s me, Dave. What is it?”

I shook my head.

It was impossible.

But I knew what I saw.

**

“You’re… you’re not her, are you?” I whispered. “You’re someone else pretending to be her. I-I don’t know how you’re doing this, but I know something is up. You’re not my Carol.”

Now her face hardened, the previous softness leaving her expression.

She crossed her arms over her chest, tilting her head to the side. “I am Carol,” she stated. “I look like her. And I love you. Does anything else matter?”

The ground seemed to shift beneath my feet.

“Yes,” I whispered, staring at her. Trying to make sense of

You… you said you look like her. That things. Yes, it means you’re not her. Where’s my wife?”

“Right here,” she snapped, and her eyes gleamed a bright silver, like she was summoning lightning or moonlight.

Agrips wate

I backed into the dining table, gaping. “What the hell are you?” I asked. “What have you done to my wife?” for free.

-DAVE’S POV-

She walked closer to me, and in an instant, her face changed again.

This really was her.

The woman who claimed to be Lia’s birth mother.

This woman wasn’t my wife.

Where was Carol?

My heart beat harder than ever as she approached me, eyes glowing like some kind o

My back pressed against the dining table, eyes flickering towards the door.

I had to get out of here.

“Your Carol is somewhere safe, Dave. She’s with Lia. So you need not worry about her,” she said, and my eyes widened,

Lia knew?

What the hell was going on?

“But I am very hurt by your behaviour and language for me. Was I not a perfect wife to you the last few weeks? Did I not make you feel young again? Did I not cause you to feel alive?” she asked, tilting her head. She brought her hand to my face, and I slapped it off.

“Get back,” I snapped, giving her a hard shove. She wasn’t a woman. She was a witch. “I love Carol! Not you!” She stumbled back, her eyes wide like I’d shocked her. Like I’d broken her heart.

I didn’t wait for her to recover.

Without wasting a second, I bolted out of the house, onto the street.

My feet slammed against the road as I ran as fast as I could, Carol’s face floating before my eyes.

How did I not recognise her sooner?

How could I be fooled for so long?

“Dave!” a deeper, more sultry voice called out behind me, making me freeze on the spot.

I turned, breath catching when I saw her.

She was a short distance away from me, but not on the ground.

She was levitating.

The ground shook.

The air seemed to glimmer.

“You’re not gonna leave me,” she stated. “Not you. Not this time.”

She extended a hand, and I was pulled off the ground, flying towards her.

She wrapped her arms around me in an embrace, smiling at me. “You’re mine, Dave. You’re everything I’ve wanted for centuries. Your loyalty to her even now… it amazes me. You must be mine.”

I tried to push her away, but she didn’t budge. Not even slightly.

Her hold on me tightened, almost painful.

“Quit struggling and accept your fate, honey. If you want Carol to live.”

Now I froze, the fight in me dying.

“No. You… you can’t hurt her,” I whispered.

“I won’t,” she reassured, “if you just go back with me and act like everything is fine. Look me in the eyes, Dave, and believe this. You are mine. You love Sarah. You love Selene. You don’t even know a Carol.”

I blinked, her words echoing in my head repeatedly.

I shook my head, but they didn’t go away.

“Believe it. It’s always been me. I’m your daughter’s mother too.”

I clenched my jaw, but it slipped from my control.

My eyes dimmed.

“I… I love… S… Sel…”

“Selene!” a loud voice shattered the stillness of the night, breaking me out of the trance I almost fell into.

Lia.

It was Lia

-LIA’S POV-

“Let my Dad go!” I yelled, spreading my arms and calling to nature for help.

It answered quicker than I expected, and my feet lifted off the ground, raising me to their level.

Selene turned to me, her eyes gleaming silver.

Mine glowed purple. “Let Dad go,” I snapped, glaring.

She obliged, and he fell to the ground, dropping to his knees.

The air around her shimmered, almost as if it was worshipping her.

“I thought I made myself clear, Lia,” she said, her expression full of contempt. “Stay out of this unless you want the entire town to pay.”

“Father,” I called, staring at her.
