My chest squeezed. The question I’d been holding back tore out of me. “Why didn’t you do it?”

Her brows pulled together. “Do what?”

“You could have slaughtered them. The Order. They nearly killed Zane. They destroyed lives. They hurt you.” My throat tightened but I forced the words out. “Why didn’t you make them pay?”

She looked at me, her expression unreadable. “Because kindness is always stronger than cruelty. I’m not a monster, no matter what the myths or books say. I’m never gonna use my powers for evil. That’s not who I am.”

The words struck harder than I expected.

Cracked something inside me I hadn’t even known was frozen.

I’d always thought strength meant fire, steel, blood.

But she said it like it was obvious. Like it was the only thing that mattered.

I couldn’t answer. Couldn’t argue

She touched my arm, gave it a quick squeeze, and then walked down the hall to her room like nothing more needed to be said. And I just stood there, heart thundering in my chest, realising I’d been wrong about her from the start.

“Caitlyn?”

The voice startled me.

I turned around, finding Blake a few steps away.

“What are you doing here?” he asked quietly, approaching me.

“I was just…” I tucked my hair behind my ear. “Talking to Lia.”

He stepped closer, eyes narrowing. “Did she threaten you? Say anything?”

“No,” I said quickly, shaking my head. “Nothing like that. She just offered to help me look for my sister.”

His expression softened, though not completely. His hand lifted, hesitated, then gently took mine.

Those sparks shot through my skin.

“Still,” he said, “you should go back to your room. Stay away from the Hounds. I trust Lia, but Aaron and Warner…” His jaw tightened. “They’re not as forgiving as her. I shot Warner, and Aaron’s mate. He might try to get back at me through you.”

I swallowed. The fear in his voice tugged at my heart.

“I still know how to look out for myself,” I reminded him. “I’ve not gone soft.”

“I know,” he said, the ghost of a smile on his face. “But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop worrying.”

Something warm spread through my chest.

Unwelcome, stubborn, but there all the same.

I let him guide me back down the hall, his hand steady around mine, and for the first time in days, the cold that had been lodged inside me loosened just a little.

-LIA’S POV-

We spent two days in Blake’s territory, asking questions, searching for the man who had broken the Moon Goddess’s heart.

Each place blurred into the next.

Shops with faded signs.

Gas stations with bored clerks who didn’t care enough to look at us twice.

Blake’s wolves watched from the edges, curious but not interfering.

Zane stuck close the whole time. His hand would brush mine whenever I started drifting off into my thoughts.

He was watching me more than the road. More than the people. And I couldn’t blame him. My chest had been tight since the moment we set out. I kept circling back to the same thought, over and over. If my father was out here, if he’d been alive all this time… why had he never come for me?

“You’re overthinking again,” Zane said when we stopped outside another gas station.

I pressed my lips together. “How can I not?”

He gave me that look-the one that said he wanted to argue, to push, but he knew not to. So he just nodded and let it go.

By the end of the second day I was wrecked.

My hair stuck to my face with sweat, my clothes smelled like the road, and every bone in my body ached for a bed. But then someone finally recognised the description I’d provided.

“Jonathan Hale?” the man behind the counter asked.

My mouth fell open. The first real lead. “I guess. Yeah.”

He squinted at me like he was pulling a memory from the back of his mind. “Yeah, he lives on the edge of town. Small house near the woods. Doesn’t come out much.”

My heart skipped a beat.

I leaned forward, gripping the counter before I could stop myself. “Can you tell me exactly where?”

He gave directions. Simple ones. I thanked him, though my voice shook.

Back in the car, I stared out the window, numb. Zane didn’t start driving right away.

“Lia,” he said softly. “You don’t have to do this today. We can wait.”

“No. We don’t even know if it’s really him. The description I gave could fit so many people, and we’ve walked through so many public places hoping to spot him but haven’t. We can’t waste more time.” I turned to him, hands trembling in my lap. “I have to see him.”

His eyes softened further, then he nodded and started the engine.

The drive felt both endless and too quick at the same time.

By the time we pulled into a narrow gravel drive, my stomach was twisted into a tight knot.

The house was small and old. Paint peeling along the edges. It looked quiet-almost lonely. For some reason, I’d imagined a man with a new family.

My throat tightened as I stared at it, caught between fear and hope.

“That’s it,” Zane said, his hand brushing mine again. “Are you ready?”

I shook my head. But I opened the gate anyway.

The gravel crunched under my shoes as I walked up the path.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the main door.

Somewhere inside that house was the man who gave me half my blood. Somewhere inside was the truth I’d been denied all my life.

For the first time in days, I felt like I was standing on the edge of it.

The door creaked open.

A middle-aged man leaned against the frame, eyes narrowing like he was trying to place me.

My breath caught.

“I know you,” he said slowly, voice rough. “But I shouldn’t. I haven’t seen you before.”

“You do know me,” I said as my heart hammered in my chest. “Not from here. From a long time ago.’

Something flickered in his gaze. His hand tightened on the door.

“I saw you,” I said quickly, desperate to keep him from shutting me out. “I saw you in a vision months ago, when I found out I was the Moon Goddess’s daughter. You were there.”

His expression shifted. Suspicion. Disbelief.

And then… something softer. Gentler. Almost welcome.

Without a word, he stepped aside and gestured us in.

The cottage smelled of fresh paint. The walls were lined with books. Maybe he was a nerd like me.

Zane guided me to a chair while the man sat down across from us, still staring like he couldn’t tell if I was real or a ghost.

“You said you are her daughter,” he said. “Selene’s.”

“Yes,” I replied, voice as steady as I could manage. “And yours, I think. I don’t have time to explain everything. Not with how things are right now.”

He gave a tired, bitter half-smile. “She always leaves trouble behind.”
