And a part of me would always blame myself for falling short every time.
“So it’s really happening,” she whispered as I walked up to her. “I’m going to meet him.”
I crouched in front of her so she had to meet my eyes. “You’re not alone in this,” I told her firmly. “Whatever happens, whatever he says-you’ve got me. You’ve got all of us, my love.”
Her lips trembled, but she forced a shaky smile. “What if he doesn’t want to get involved? He left her for a reason. I’m guessing he was afraid.”
“Maybe. But I’m sure he’s not a bad person. He’ll help when he understands the stakes. Especially for you.”
She laughed drily. “For me? He wouldn’t do anything for me. He doesn’t even know me.”
“You’re his child.”
“He doesn’t want me, Zane.”
“Then he’s an idiot and we’re gonna change that.”
She let out a laugh, and I reached for her hand, pressing it to my chest. “Feel that? That’s just the effect of your laughter. You’re magic, baby. I’m sure some of it will work on him too.”
She smiled, then leaned into me, her forehead brushing mine. We stayed like that, breathing each other in like the world outside didn’t exist.
Then she pulled back gently, her eyes glistening with tears. “I should sit with Mom for a while. I have to tell her we’re leaving.”
I nodded, though every part of me wanted to keep her right here in my arms. “Go,” I said. “I’ll be waiting when you’re ready.”
-LIA’S POV-
The doors shut behind us with a dull thud, closing us inside Blake’s pack house.
The air was thick with the smell of wolves, but different to ours. Goosebumps covered my skin as my eyes swept around the room. Blake’s pack filled the space, their eyes fixed on us like we were intruders. Which, I suppose, we were.
Ajax muttered something under his breath, too low for me to catch, but the stiffness in his shoulders told me he was barely keeping himself in check. Aaron kept Sheila close, his arm wrapped around her waist protectively. Zane’s hand brushed mine, grounding me, though his stare was locked on Blake who stepped forward from the group.
He looked calmer than I’d expected. Just a cool, steady gaze that flicked from me to Zane, then back again.
“You came,” Blake said, voice even.
“We didn’t have a choice,” I answered before Zane could. My throat felt dry, but I forced the words out anyway. “If you care at all about what happens to this town and ours, you’ll help us.”
A murmur rippled through his wolves.
Blake raised a hand and silence fell. His eyes lingered on Zane, refusing to glance at me. “That’s what I’m doing,” he said. “I wouldn’t have allowed you guys here if I didn’t want to help.”
I released a slow breath, relief filling me. I had to hear it for myself.
Zane stepped forward, his voice carrying more command than mine ever could. “We need information. Leads. We’re looking for someone.”
“Her father,” Blake nodded. “We’ll get to that. For now, why don’t you guys settle in and rest for a while? We’ll talk in the morning.”
“Okay,” Zane nodded, even though I wanted to start now.
I just wanted to get this over with and go home.
But I stayed silent, letting Zane take the lead.
Blake gestured at his pack members, and a couple of them stepped forward to take our bags.
I hesitated before handing mine over, my heart still thumping in my chest.
We followed a wolf to our bedrooms, up the large staircase of Blake’s pack house.
Zane and I were given one, Sheila and Aaron another, and Ajax and Warner ended up together down the hall. I was still trying to get used to the idea of sleeping under Blake’s roof when I caught sight of her.
Caitlyn..
That girl from the Order. Who Blake claimed was her mate.
I was surprised she was still here, with him.
She stood near the staircase, her arms crossed, eyes flicking over us.
Our gazes met for a split second, and I remembered how she had tried to kill me on the night of the Blood Moon. The hatred in her gaze when she’d looked at me.
But that sharpness was gone from her eyes now, replaced by something more gentle.
Almost like regret.
-CAITLYN’S POV-
I stood near the staircase, half hidden in the shadows, pretending I wasn’t eavesdropping even though I kind of was.
They’d only just stepped into Blake’s pack house and already the place felt smaller, like all the walls had squeezed in a little.
A couple of Blake’s wolves stepped forward, taking their bags from them like esteemed guests. They were led to bedrooms that had already been decided, with a guy and a girl staying in one, two guys staying in another, and Lia and Zane in the last.
My palms were clammy with sweat.
I couldn’t stop reminding myself how I’d tried to kill them. Not once. Not accidentally. I’d done it with intent. And now here they were, walking under the same roof as me, breathing the same air.
And I didn’t feel hatred anymore.
I imagined Lia’s expression if she brought it up now, if she reminded everyone what I’d done, and my stomach flipped. I deserved whatever came.
But then she turned her head, and our eyes met.
I froze. My first instinct was to bolt up the steps, pretend I hadn’t seen her, hide in my room until morning. But that would look worse. So I stayed put, chin up like I wasn’t shaking inside.
She started walking over. Not fast. Just steady. Zane lingered back by their door, watching but not interfering. The closer she got, the smaller she seemed. Tired. Absolutely exhausted. Like she’d run through a storm and had been struck by lightning.
“Do you need anything?” she asked me, the calmness of her tone surprising me. There was no sharp edge to it. Like she didn’t even remember what I’d done on the night of the Blood Moon. “Are you in trouble with Blake?” she whispered, eyes darting around to make sure no one heard.
My heart squeezed in my chest.
After all I’d done, she was worried about me. About whether he was treating me correctly.
Because of what he’d done to her.
She was afraid if he was hurting me like he hurt her with the Order’s help.
I blinked at her, caught off guard. “No. I’m safe,” I said, though the words sounded weird even to me. Still, it was true. Blake could be controlling, sure, but he wasn’t cruel. Not to me, at least.
She gave me a small smile, just a flicker, and started to turn away.
Something panicked in my chest. If I let her leave now, that would be it. I’d be the girl who tried to kill her and never said a single word.
“Wait,” I blurted.
She turned back, eyes tired, dark bags under them like she hadn’t been sleeping well.
I swallowed. My voice came out rougher than I’d planned. “I heard about your Mom. And your birth mom. I’m sorry, Lia. That’s brutal. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.”
She didn’t say anything at first. Just listened.
So I continued rambling. “My sister went missing when I was younger. A werewolf took her. Stole her right out of our lives and no one ever found her. She was loud, you know? Laugh you could hear from the kitchen, even with the door shut. Then one day-gone. The silence after… it gets in your bones.” My throat tightened. “So I get it. A little. Family wounds hurt the most.”
Something in her expression shifted then. Not pity. Just understanding, like she immediately forgave me for what I’d done.
“Thank you,” she said softly. “For telling me.”
“I’m not asking for anything,” I said quickly, shaking my head. “I just wanted you to know I’m not cheering for your pain. I hate that this is happening to you.”
She nodded slowly, then said, “Once I’ve handled this with Selene, I’ll ask my witch friend to help you find your sister. I can’t promise it’ll work, but we’ll try.”
My breath hitched, heart giving a loud thud in my chest.
“You… you’d do that?” I whispered.
Hope felt dangerous.
“If there’s a chance, we’ll take it,” she said simply. “No one should have to wonder forever.”
I managed a shaky smile. “Thank you.”
She turned then, but I stopped her once more. “Wait.”
She turned to me again, still patient.
