The room seemed to tilt. She said it so plainly, like it was obvious, like I was stupid for not seeing it.
“You took her life,” I whispered.
Selene stepped closer, her expression soft but unyielding. “She doesn’t deserve him, Lia. She left him for so long. And only got him back when she got left a child. Because she needed him. Not because she wanted him. But me-I can love him the way he should be loved. I can be the wife he needs. The mother you need. Don’t you see, Lia? I’ve given you more than she ever could. And I gave birth to you. You’re mine anyway.”
My stomach lurched, bile rising in my throat.
I wanted to scream at her, to tell her she was a monster, but the words stuck.
Because part of me understood now.
This was her villain origin story, laid bare.
She wasn’t cruel for the sake of it. She was deluded, desperate, clinging to an idea of love so warped it turned her into this.
And somehow, that was worse.
And more dangerous.
Selene’s eyes caught mine, sharp and steady, like she was daring me to blink first.
“I know what you’re thinking, Lia. You still don’t get it. But it’s okay, you don’t need to. You think I wanted this?” she said, her voice low. “You think I chose to become the monster in your story? No, Lia. I loved. Over and over, I loved. And each time, they betrayed me.”
I stayed quiet, watching her.
“They swore eternity,” she went on, a bitter laugh breaking through. “Immortality means nothing when the heart is weak. They promised me forever, but forever was never enough. They left. Every one of them left. Their absence tore holes in me, cracks that would not heal. Do you know what it’s like to be abandoned century after century, by the they could never live without you?” very men who claimed
Her face hardened, but I caught the flicker of something painful underneath.
“Then I turned to humans. I created something new with each of them. But they left every time.” al
“My father,” I whispered before I could stop myself. “He left you too, didn’t he?”
Her gaze snapped to mine, tears starting to fill her eyes like I’d struck a nerve.
“I don’t like talking about him,” she whispered. “But yes. He was the first human man I trusted. A mortal who made me feel things not even immortals ever had. We had you.
You were beautiful. But I had to give you away because I thought I was protecting you. He thought I would leave and return to the sky. But when I didn’t, he couldn’t take it anymore. He ran from me, tail between his legs. Do you know why? Because he couldn’t stomach the power he shared his bed with. He betrayed me, just like the rest, crawling away to hide behind his mortal shame. He cheated before he ran. Weak, pathetic man.”
I frowned, realising she wasn’t over him. Even now. She had tears in her eyes and her voice broke when she spoke of him.
“You let it twist you,” I said quietly. “You let all of it warp how you see love. It’s not supposed to be like this.”
Her lips curved, but it wasn’t amusement-it was something darker. “You’re wrong. I’ve learned. And this time, it’s different. Dave is different. He will love me. He already does.”
Heat shot through my chest. “No. He loves my Mom. He always has, and he always will. You can’t change that, no matter what tricks you play. He will find out who you are. He’ll figure it out in a while, Selene. You can’t fool him forever. They have history. A marriage. A love that goes way back. He’ll know you’re not her. Right now, he’s just confused.”
Her eyes gleamed silver, and her voice dropped. “Careful, little one. If you tell him the truth, if you dare shatter the illusion I’ve built, the whole town will burn for your defiance. Do you understand? Everyone you care for will suffer. Your beloved mate. His pack. Your Mom, who you think you can protect if she’s in your pack house. Christy. Nathan. That ng witch. Blake, his new mate, and everyone else you’ve ever even known.”
My heart thudded against my chest, a chill settling within me.
“Do not risk so many lives for one. Send your precious Mom away and make sure she never returns. Otherwise, I will.”
-LIA’S POV-
“I knew it was a bad idea to get involved,” Sapphire snapped, pacing the room. “She actually mentioned me? Specifically?”
I lowered my gaze, while Zane looked to the side, his jaw set since the moment we left the house.
“I’m sorry, Sapphire. I didn’t mean to get you into trouble,” whispered.
“I’m not actually,” she said, glaring. “I will only be in trouble if you decide to tell your Dad the truth. That’s what she said.”
I blinked, frowning. “You can’t expect me to just let him stay with her.”
“Then you need to find a way to send her back! Not tell him the truth, alright?”
“How?” I whispered. “What more could I want than to send her back? She’s not gonna leave. Not without a fight.”
“Lia’s right,” Warner said. “We need to fight her and send her back. She’s too dangerous to be around, Saph.”
“And how do you fight a goddess?” Sheila asked incredulously. ‘Are you out of your mind? Did you not hear what she did today? Lia was our only chance and she clearly defeated her.”
“And me,” Zane added quietly. “There was nothing I could do against her. I’ve never felt more pin my life,” he admitted, kicking a chair.
I released a slow breath. “We have to try,” I said softly. “I can’t just let her take over Mom’s life. And who is to say she will stop at Mom. If Dad stops being exactly what she wants, who is to say she won’t find a new target? She’s treating humans like dolls, guys. We have to stop her. Sapphire, aren’t you witches all about the balance of the universe? Won’t this completely mess everything up?”
Sapphire rolled her eyes. “It would.”
“Then help us.”
“No,” she snapped, scowling at me. “No more, Lia.”
I sighed, running a hand through my hair.
“It’s not that I don’t want to,” she continued, “it’s the fact that this is out of my league. I’m sorry, I’m not cut out to fight against a god-level threat, alright? But… I can help you with something else.”
Now my ears perked, and I met her gaze, hopeful. “What?”
Sapphire pursed her lips, as if hesitating, then spoke up again. “I can put in a good word for you and Zane to my coven. They’re a strong lot, with some witches powerful enough to read the minds of gods, even at such a distance. It’s clear that we cannot defeat your birth mother by fighting her. That isn’t an option, because we can’t risk the whole town’s safety. But we can find out what she really desires deep down, and use that to convince her to go back herself.”
“Even if we somehow manage that, she could just come back down and ruin everything again,” Zane said.
Sapphire shook her head. “I don’t think so. As far as I know, the Moon Goddess can’t just descend whenever she ts. There is a system, a process. Maybe that’s why she just stayed down here and never went back. So if we convince her to leave even once, we might be rid of her for quite some time.”
I nodded slowly, the gears in my head turning. “You’re right,” I said. “It’s a temporary solution, but at least it buys us a whole lot of time. Maybe she just decides to stay up there when she goes back.”
“It’s possible. She’s been down here so long, she might have forgotten how cool it was up there,” Aaron said.
“Being a white ball?” Ajax muttered.
“Being a Goddess,” Aaron replied.
‘Alright,” Zane said, stepping beside me. “You talk to your witches. Let’s see what they have for us.”
“Okay,” Sapphire nodded. “But it might come at a price.”
“What kind?” I asked.
“Nothing serious,” she said quickly. “You’re my friends, so they won’t be harsh. But witches are transactional creatures.”
“Okay,” Zane sighed. “We’ll see whatever it is. You talk to them.”
“I will. Give me a day.”
“A day?” I frowned. “Can’t it be done quicker? Every moment we waste, my Dad is at risk.”
“I’m doing this as quickly as I can, Lia. My witches aren’t sitting idle. They’re on missions. They’re out there protecting this town and this world. Give me some time. Until then, I warn you, sit tight. Do not let your emotions get the best of you again. You’re lucky she let you live this time. You might not be so lucky when it happens next.”
I nodded, lowering my gaze. “I won’t do anything stupid. I promise.”
“Thanks. I’ll be on my way then.”
Sapphire turned to leave, but Warner grabbed her wrist, pulling her back. She bumped against his chest, her eyes wide, and he rested his hands on her waist. “I love you, Sapphire. Thank you for everything,” he said softly, leaning in and pressing his lips against hers.
The whole room glimmered as she kissed him back, and my heart felt a little lighter watching them.
I glanced at Zane, and he was already looking at me.
He smiled, pulling me to his chest and claiming my mouth with his.
Butterflies erupted in my stomach, sparks breaking out under my skin.
I didn’t have to open my eyes to know that Aaron and Sheila decided to kiss too.
“Very nice, guys. Lovely,” Ajax grumbled and left the room.
I smiled against Zane’s lips, who let out a soft chuckle, before deepening our kiss.
And just like that, everything felt doable, every problem solvable, the entire world narrowing down to just him and I.
Mated to Two Bad Boy Alpha
-LIA’S POV-
Sapphire walked ahead of us, her steps sure and steady, like she’d walked down this path a thousand times.
