The Moon’s Lost Daughter.

I guess I was never really lost at all.

*

My eyes gleamed purple as we pulled outside my house, and with my senses so heightened, it didn’t take me stepping in to know that she was alone in there. Dad was still out. So the timing was actually perfect.

I climbed out of the car, Zane following after me, shifting into his wolf.

I stood a short distance away from the door and gave a nod.

Zane growled and broke the door down, pulling a scream from her lips.

I climbed up the steps and walked in, hair shimmering, skin glowing.

She tried to pretend still, watching with wide eyes, covering her mouth.

“Lia,” she whispered, shaking as I moved closer to her. “Lia, what’s happening to you? What… what are you?” she cried.

I tilted my head, eyes narrowing. “Cut the shit, Selene,” I said. “We know it’s you. We’ve known for a while now.”

She stilled, then rolled her eyes, her entire aura shifting.

Her back straightened, eyes dimming, and she crossed her arms, staring at me unimpressed.

“I did fool you for a while,” she said. “Wasn’t it cool?”

“Cool?” I snapped, glaring at her. “No, Selene. It wasn’t cool.” My voice sounded deeper than it was, and I stepped closer to her, feeling the hum and heat under my skin. “What you did was extremely out of line. Trying to take over my Mom’s life? Thinking you could just pretend to be her and no one would notice? You’re no goddess. You’re a devil,”

She chuckled softly, shaking her head. “Darling, heroes and villains are all about perspective.”

“No matter whose eye you see this through, what you did was nothing short of pure evil.”

Her smile didn’t fall. “Did she survive? Where is she now?”

“Somewhere you’ll never reach her!” I growled, and the lights in the room started to flicker.

Selene’s eyes widened and she looked around, afraid. Her heart raced. “Li-Lia, stop that.”

“Why? Afraid of your own mirror, Selene?” I smirked, and the room shook.

Her face hardened again, that evil glint filling her eye. “No, sweetheart. I just think it’s a little pathetic for my offspring.”

She waved a hand, and my legs lifted off the ground, body thrown across the room like a doll.

Zane growled and pounced forward, catching me/mid-air, rolling on the ground with me.

We both glanced at Selene, and my eyes widened.

She’d changed.

The door Zane had broken down mended itself, turning into metal and shutting the exit.

The windows hardened to stone, and Selene walked towards us, blinding white light radiating off of her.

Zane whimpered and turned the other way, but I managed to watch her, the light uncomfortable for my eyes but not hurting them.

She looked like herself now instead of Mom.

White hair, white skin, silver eyes.

The moon itself personified.

She walked up to me, and crouched down, grabbing a rough hold of my chin and tipping my face up.

“You really thought you could fight me, Lia?” she asked. “You’re just a piece of me. You’re like… moondust. I gave you your powers, darling. You think I cannot take them away?” She closed her other fist and tugged at air, pulling a scream from my lips.

My soul felt like it was tearing. Like the very essence of my life was being yanked out of me.

Zane growled, charging towards us, but Selene barely even looked at him and he went flying back, as if an invisible force had grabbed him by the neck.

Tears rolled down my cheeks, my entire body burning.

I stared at her through glassy eyes, her hold on my tightening until it hurt. face

“One second. That’s how long it will take me to finish you. You will cease to exist like you never did. That’s how easy it is for me, because I created you. You think you can fight me because you came from me? No, Lia. You’re easier to undo than humans because you’re my mistake.”

I grunted, feeling the corners of my vision starting to darken.

“I do not want to hurt you. I never did. But if you leave me no choice, I will turn you and everybody you love to ash,” she warned.

She then let go of me, and the air came crashing back into my lungs.

I coughed, planting my palms on the ground, every limb aching.

Zane fell to the ground too, but immediately limped towards me, whimpering.

I glanced up at my birth mother.

“Why?” I whispered, as more tears left my eyes. “Why are you doing this? You gave birth to me. Then you abandoned me. You stayed on Earth, but never came to see me. Then you showed up sixteen years later, and I was still ready to accept you. To love you. And you took over my Mom’s life and tried to kill her. Why?” I sobbed, my heart shattering into a million pieces.

It felt like the Blood Moon all over again.

No one was dead this time.

And yet it felt like everything was falling apart.

Selene stared at me, the surroundings returning back to normal. My house looking like my house again.

Her form changed, back to being a

Had a wind all of m mirror of my Mom.

“To gain the one thing I could never have… The thing humans fight wars for, and werewolves sacrifice themselves for. The thing you, my daughter got, but I didn’t-love, Lia. I am doing this only for love.”

-LIA’S POV-

Love?

I stared at her, my throat tight, waiting for her to elaborate.

Was she for real? She’d kidnapped my Mom and tried to kill her for ‘love’?

It was ridiculous, but the way her eyes softened, almost dreamy, made my skin crawl.

She was sick. A lunatic. She had to be.

“You don’t understand,” Selene said, her voice gentle. “He’s perfect, Lia. Kind, caring, gentle. He listens. He makes sure you’re safe. He holds doors. He’s affectionate. And oh, so great in bed. Do you know how rare that is? How precious?”

My stomach twisted, and I let the emotion show on my face. “You mean… my dad?”

I wanted to puke.

Her smile grew, almost girlish, like she was confessing a silly crush. “Yes. Your dad. He’s everything I’ve searched for and never found. The way he smiles, the way he worries, even the way he fusses when he thinks he’s not good enough. I love that.

He’s real. He’s flawed in the tiniest ways-like leaving the toilet seat up, or forgetting to switch the light off-but those things don’t matter. If anything, they make him mor perfect. Do you see?”

I swallowed hard, staring at her in disbelief. “You’re insane, Selene. He’s doing all this for Mom. Not for you. He’s doing this because he thinks you’re her. He doesn’t even know you or care about you. You’re not his wife.”

Her head tilted, not offended, not surprised. “Maybe. But I make him happy. He said it himself. Your ‘Mom’ wouldn’t even cook for him. Their relationship had grown dull and dusty. But I… I’ve lived lifetimes chasing love that never stayed. So I will never let it fade away with him. Your Mom doesn’t deserve him.”

“You’re wrong. And you’re crazy,” I hissed. “Mom was crazy about him. And so is he about her. Not you.’

She laughed, like I’d said the funniest thing in the world.

“If you want a human man, just get someone else, Someone single. Someone who needs to be loved like you. Leave Dad alone, Selene.”

She smiled, nodding. “I’d thought the same. I thought if I began again with human men, if I shaped them, if I built something fresh, it would work. But I was wrong. So wrong. I should have realised sooner. Love isn’t something you can create from nothing. Men either have it in their hearts, or they don’t. And there is no way to know unless you already see them displaying it. So… love is something you take. Something you claim when ng you it’s already real.”

The words hit me like a slap. My mind scrambled to catch up, to piece together the twisted logic forming in front of me.

“You’re saying,” I managed, my voice shaking, “that instead of starting new, you should just steal someone’s life? Someone’s family?”

Her eyes lit, bright as the moon. “Exactly. Why waste time building when perfection already exists? Your Mom had what I wanted. What I needed. So I took it.”
