I swallowed hard, took a shaky breath, and then the words tumbled out before I could stop them.

“Protection,” I blurted out.

Her eyebrow shot up, eyes narrowing slightly.

“Zane and I… we thought about sleeping together. We even hid some in my bedroom.” I gestured a little as I talked, as if that would somehow make this sound less horrible. “I know you and Dad would never approve, which is why I was being so secretive about it, but we decided against it. We’re going to wait until we’re eighteen. Still… I didn’t want you or Dad to ever find it lying around and get traumatised, so I wanted to sneak it out.”

I kept stringing words together, turning my explanation into a messy rant. “I mean, can you imagine Dad finding it? He’d probably have a heart attack. And then you’d both lecture me for hours and I just-no. No, thank you. So yeah, that’s why I needed to go upstairs first. Not because I was hiding something else. Just that.”

For a moment, the silence nearly killed me. My heart hammered so hard I was sure she could hear it. But then she started to laugh-a soft, easy laugh that made my shoulders loosen just fraction.

“Oh, Lia,” she said, shaking her head with a smile. “I’m glad you decided to wait. It’s not something to rush. But thank you for being honest. It’s really okay.”

Her reassurance almost made me choke

Relief and nerves twisted together in my stomach, an odd mix, but I found the courage to step forward and wrap my arms around her. Her body was warm, comforting in that familiar way, and for a second I hated how much I wanted it to be real.

She wasn’t Mom.

My Mom was somewhere else. Unsafe. In trouble.

Then I pulled back quickly, muttering, “I’ll see you later. I can’t face you right now, this is too embarrassing.”

I dashed out the door before she could say more, rushing down the stairs and out of the house, relief filling me as I climbed into the car beside Zane.

“Drive,” I whispered, breathless.

“You got it?” he asked.

“Yes. Go.”

Through the window, I saw her standing at the doorway, smiling as she waved.

Sapphire sat cross-legged on the rug, the bracelet cupped in both hands. It looked small against her fingers, like it didn’t belong there, and my stomach twisted into a tight knot.

That was Mom’s. My mom’s.

The Hounds were seated on the couches, legs sprawled.

Ajax drummed his fingers against the armrest. Warner leaned forward, his elbows on his knees, eyes glued to his witch mate. Aaron had his arm around Sheila but his gaze was sharp, focused on the bracelet.

I sat on the edge of the nearest chair, my hands fisted together in my lap. In spite of Zane sitting beside me, my heart wouldn’t slow down.

Every time Sapphire muttered under her breath, that vision slammed back into my head-Mom chained to a wall, the stone dripping with shadows that seemed alive. Her face pale. Her eyes dull. I pressed my nails into my palms, trying to hold myself together.

Zane slipped his hand into mine, lacing our fingers.

Sparks shot through my arm, and I released a trembling breath. aca

Sapphire closed her eyes. The bracelet glowed faintly, a shimmer of blue that pulsed in rhythm with her breath. Minutes dragged like hours.

What if it didn’t work? What if she couldn’t see? What if I never found Mom?

Then Sapphire gasped. The glow flared and her eyes snapped open, brighter than usual, like the magic had set them alight from the inside. She let the bracelet drop back into the plastic box and exhaled slowly.

“I know where she is,” she said.

My heart thumped in my chest, breath catching in my throat. “You do?”

Sapphire nodded. Her voice was calm, but there was a weight in it that made my skin prickle. “But there’s a problem.”

I froze. “What is it?” I whispered. “She’s… she’s okay, right?”

“Yes. Your mom’s okay. Physically, at least. But Selene’s used cloaking magic,” Sapphire said, standing up from the ground. “Even if you reached the place, you wouldn’t be able to see her. Not without a witch to drop the cloak.”

The room went silent for a beat. Then Warner leaned forward even more, his voice rough. “So you’ll come with us, right?”

Sapphire met his gaze, steady and unflinching.

“No. I will not.”

-LIA’S POV-

I sat on the edge of the sofa, twisting my fingers together while Warner leaned forward in his chair, his eyes narrowing on Sapphire.

“Why are you refusing?” he asked gently, his tone more curious than accusing.

Sapphire crossed her arms, leaning back as though to shield herself from the weight of everyone’s pointed stares. “Because I don’t want to get involved in werewolf problems so directly. Helping behind the scenes is one thing, but going head-on against the Moon Goddess? On a rescue mission for a woman she wants to become? That’s another matter entirely. It’s too risky for me.”

Zane stood up and stepped closer to her, his back tense. “Sapphire,” he said with more softness than I expected, “we need you. Without you, this isn’t possible. We don’t have other witch friends. You’ve always been strong enough for this and I promise I’ll prot-“

“No,” she cut in firmly, her expression hard.

Warner straightened up then, stepping beside his mate as if to protect her from Zane. “She’s helped us whenever we’ve asked. Zane, please don’t push her now. If she doesn’t want to go, she shouldn’t have to. She doesn’t owe us anything and none of us can force her.”

The tension hung thick in the air. I hated it-the way Sapphire’s jaw was set, the way Zane looked like he was about to argue again. Maybe even play his Alpha card.

But I couldn’t let this happen. I couldn’t let them all start fighting because of me.

So before Zane could say a word, I finally spoke up.

“Warner’s right.” My voice came out shakier than I’d meant, but I pressed on. “Sapphire, thank you. For everything you’ve already done for us. If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have made it this far. I understand if you don’t want to risk more. I do. It’s just-” My throat tightened, and suddenly I couldn’t hold back the tears I’d been holding in for the last hour. “It’s just my Mom.” My voice broke into a pathetic sob. “I can’t leave her in captivity. I… I don’t know how long Selene will keep her alive. She’s everything to me. She picked me up off a doorstep and lied to the love of her life that I was her own, and now I can’t even…”

The words dissolved into another cry before I could finish. I buried my face in my hands, but it was too late-everyone had seen.

The room filled with the sounds of my cries, and if I were being honest, I wasn’t embarrassed.

| 10:54

This was about my Mom.

Zane’s hands found my arms, and he pulled me to his chest, rubbing my back.

“Shh… please, Lia,” he begged, his voice pained.

I sniffled against him, the world around me falling apart.

Then I heard her step closer, and my ears perked up.

I pulled away from Zane to find Sapphire standing in front of full of pity. me, her eyes

“Lia…” She sighed heavily, like she was surrendering something inside herself. “Fine. I’ll go with you. Not because I want to, but because you clearly need me to. I never felt my mother’s love growing up. You clearly shared something else with yours.”

I looked up at her, my cheeks wet, my chest aching. Relief and gratitude crashed over me. Without thinking, I pulled her into a hug. “Thank you. Thank you so much. I will owe you my life, Sapphire. Forever. Anything you might ever need, if it’s something I can do, I won’t turn you down.”

She awkwardly tapped my back, stiffening up.

“Okay. Thanks.”

I pulled away from her to meet her gaze.

“Is there anything you need, for the spell? To drop the cloaking once we find her?”

Sapphire nodded. “A sprig of vervain, powdered silver, and light. Lots of light. If you can bring those, I can do the rest.”

“Light?” I frowned.

“You’re the Moon Goddess’s daughter, aren’t you?”

I took a deep breath, wiping away my tears. “I am.

WEW

“So can you summon light at your fingertips?’

My eyes gleamed purple, jaw tightening in determination. A soft hum arose under my skin, and the lights in the room flickered. “Whatever you need.” special offer: 800 bonus free to you

-LIA’S POV-

The forest stretched on endlessly, shadows clinging to every tree as though the night itself wanted us to get lost.

Our small group moved together, steps stealthy, but every sense sharpened. Zane stayed close to me, his hand brushing mine every now and then, a silent reminder that I wasn’t alone. That no matter what, I’d never be.

Sapphire walked ahead, her head tilted slightly, eyes distant. She had that look again-like she was listening to something none of us could hear.

The Hounds followed behind her, Ajax and Warner sticking very close, their stances protective, while Sheila and Aaron followed behind and scanned the trees. Derek and a few other wolves from our pack stayed on the other side, all of them focused and quick, eyes black in their wolf forms.
