“Perfect.”
Ajax and Aaron walked off, and I leaned my head on Zane’s shoulder.
He put an arm around me, planting a gentle kiss to my head.
–
But not even his touch helped right now.
Mom was out there, alone, in pain, terrified.
And it was all because of me.
I’d practically led the Moon Goddess to her.
It was all my fault.
“It’s not,” Zane whispered, kissing my hair.
I frowned, glancing up at him.
“It’s not your fault,” he clarified.
I blinked. “How… how did you know what I was thinking?”
He tightened his hold around me, offering me a small smile. “I know you, my love. But I promise you, there was no way you could have prevented this. All we can do is deal with our circumstances.”
I nodded, lowering my gaze. “You’re right. But we need to do something fast, Zane. Dad is literally with her right now, thinking that he’s with his wife. You have any idea how dangerous that is? She might harm him.”
“No,” Zane shook his head, “if she wanted to hurt him, she would have already. I don’t think she’s trying to harm him. I think she’s… trying to take over your Mom’s life.”
A shiver crawled through me, and I looked away, scrunching my nose up.
“Dad thinks his wife has suddenly fallen for him all over again,” I muttered. “She’s cooking for him every day. Zane, what if she’s hypnotizing him or using magic to make him fall for her? For the real her? What if I lose my Dad?”
“Be positive, Lia,” Sheila sighed. “Everything’s going to be fine. Our focus needs to be on your mom right now. She’s the one in real danger, because if Selene wants to take over her life, she could be planning to get rid of her for good.”
My jaw clenched, eyes flashing purple.
“Okay, okay Sheila, that is one way of showing someone positivity,” Zane snapped, scowling at her.
Sheila blinked; her eyes wide. “I’m sorry! I just mean that Dad is safe.”
“You have a weird way of saying it,” I whispered, squeezing my eyes shut. The world felt like it was spinning again, and I leaned my head on my hands, taking quick breaths.
Sheila knelt on the ground before me, placing her hands in my lap. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. We’ll find your mom, Lia. We always get through it, no matter what is thrown at us. You defeated the entire Order single-handedly. You brought Zane back from the brink of death. This is nothing.”
From actual death, not just the brink of it.
I nodded slowly, meeting her gaze again. “I know you didn’t mean to worry me further,” I reassured. “I’m just sensitive right now.”
“I know. I’m sorry.”
Th
“It’s okay. Can you go check out the team Aaron and Ajax are gathering? I don’t trust boys to handle everything alone,” I muttered.
“Of course.”
She cupped my cheek, then stood up and left, leaving me with Zane.
He pulled me into his arms again, and I pressed my cheek to his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.
He was the calm in my storm.
And a living, breathing reminder of what I was capable of.
The Moon Goddess may have given me my powers.
But they were mine now.
And she wasn’t going to take them away from me, birth mother or not.
I’d find Mom. I’d save Dad. And I’d send her back where she belonged.
To the damned sky.
-WARNER’S POV-
I found Sapphire leaning against a tree, arms folded, expression somewhere between annoyed and impatient.
“Took you long enough,” she muttered as I jogged up to her.
I grinned sheepishly. “Had to make sure I wasn’t being followed.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, right. As if you’ve ever had anyone except me stalking you.”
I frowned. “I get followed all the time. By dangerous people. Pack rivals.”
“Sure.” She scoffed. “So what now? You lot always look like you’re saving the world, but no one ever has an actual plan. Is that what you’re here for again? Did Lia command the whole town to kill itself again? Or better yet, all werewolves?”
“I’m a werewolf,” I muttered.
She grinned. “You’re different, baby. You don’t count.”
I scratched the back of my neck. “Well… there is a bit of a mess.”
“A bit?” she echoed, narrowing her eyes.
I gave her the most harmless smile I could manage. “The Moon Goddess may or may not have kidnapped Lia’s mom and… uh… taken her place.”
Her jaw actually dropped. Then she groaned loudly, pushing off the tree. “Werewolves. I swear, you can never solve your own problems without dragging gods or witches into it. What would you even do without me?”
“Fall apart,” I said instantly, catching her hand before she could pull away. “Completely and utterly.”
She tried to glare at me, but her lips twitched. “Flattery. You’re impossible.”
“True, but you like me that way.” I tugged her towards the car, and she let me, still shaking her head like she couldn’t believe that out of all people, fate had chosen me for her.
The engine started with a growl, and the moment we hit the road, she flicked on the radio. A pop song blasted, and she drummed her fingers on the dashboard, pretending not to smile.
I stole a glance at her, warmth settling in my chest. “See, this is why the universe balances things out. Moon Goddesses cause chaos, but then I get you sitting here, distracting me with that smile.”
She rolled her eyes, leaning back in her seat. “You’re not as charming as you think.”
I reached over and intertwined my fingers with hers, keeping one hand on the wheel. “Maybe not, but you’re still here.
Although I’m starting to think you were much nicer to me when I was the rude, cold one.”
She laughed at that, soft and unguarded. She squeezed my hand once before letting go. “Shut up. Drive us to the pack house, hero. Let’s see if you and your pack can figure this one out without breaking everything first.”
“With you around?” I shot her a grin. “I think we’ll manage.”
For a moment, even with the Moon Goddess looming over us, it almost felt like everything was going to be fine.
I was mated to a badass witch, after all.
-LIA’S POV-
I caught Sapphire just as she stepped into the pack house, her long coat swaying behind her like she’d come straight out of a storm.
“Thank you for coming so quickly,” I said, stepping forward. My voice sounded more desperate than I meant it to. “And I’m sorry for always needing you. It feels like every time something happens, I’m dragging you into it.”
She waved a hand. “I’m not here for you, I’m here for Warner,” she said with a little smirk.
I blinked, then laughed. “Fair enough. Never thought Warner could end up with the most useful mate ever.”
“It’s just his luck.” She grinned.
“Anyway,” I began, “so here’s the situation-“
“I already know everything,” she cut in. “Warner filled me in on the drive. You don’t need to repeat yourself.”
I released a sigh of relief. “Great. So what do we do?”
“Easy.” She shrugged. “We find your mom. Do you have anything of hers? Something she touched, wore, or kept close?”
