Zane wrapped his arms around me instantly, strong and steady, holding me so close it felt like he was trying to shield me from the world. His chin rested on the top of my head and he kept murmuring something I couldn’t make out, his voice low and warm. Just the sound of it kept me from completely falling apart right there.

“Come on, Lia,” he said quietly against my hair. “Let’s get you inside.”

I didn’t trust my legs, but he kept his arm around me and guided me through the door. The pack house felt too warm, too loud, but he didn’t stop until we reached the sofa. He eased me down like I might break, then sat right next to me, his arm still around my shoulders. His other hand rested on my thighs, gently tracing circles to calm me down.

The Hounds appeared again within seconds, surrounding us, voices overlapping.

“What happened?”

“Will you guys tell us anything now?”

“Talk to us, Zane.”

Zane ignored them completely. He pressed a kiss to my forehead, his lips warm against my skin, then pulled me in even tighter. “Everything’s going to be fine,” he said firmly. “I’m here, Lia. And we’ve gotten through way worse.”

I scoffed, pulling away to meet his gaze. “Have we, Zane?”

“Yes,” he replied with determination. “I died, Lia. You brought me back. That was worse.”

My voice came out rough. “What if Mom isn’t alive anymore? It was so clear, Zane. The vision. I saw where she was,” I whispered. “My real Mom. In a dark cave. Alone. But I didn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it.”

He didn’t say anything, just kept his hand moving slowly through my hair.

“I thought maybe it was just some nightmare. That my head was playing tricks. But if Selene is here, living in my Mom’s place…” My throat tightened and I had to pause. “Then that means she swapped places with her that very night.”

Zane’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What night?”

“The night we completed the bond,” I said, my voice so low I wasn’t sure he heard me. “That’s when it must have happened. She took her that very moment, and we didn’t even notice. I hugged her like everything was fine, Zane. Selene must have felt so proud, thinking she took over my mom’s life so perfectly that even her own daughter failed to recognise her.”

Hot tears rolled down my cheeks, and I wiped at them uselessly.

“Aaron,” Zane said without looking away from me, “get her a glass of water.”

Aaron was gone in a heartbeat and back just as fast, holding the glass out. My hands shook too much, so Zane covered them with his own, helping me lift it.

“Breathe, love,” he murmured again. “You’re not alone in this. We’ll figure it out.”

The water was cool, and the first sip almost shocked me. I drank slowly, my hands still wrapped in Zane’s. By the time I set the glass down, my breathing had evened out a little.

“It’s going to be okay,” he promised. “Your Mom is a tough woman. She’ll be fine. Alright?”

I sniffed, nodding slowly.

Zane finally glanced at the Hounds.

“Selene’s here,” he said flatly. “The Moon Goddess. She’s been impersonating Lia’s mom.”

For a second, no one said a word. It was like the words had sucked all the air out of the room. Then Sheila’s eyes went wide.

“What?” she breathed.

“You’re joking,” Ajax muttered, though his voice was shaking.

The

Warner just stared between Zane and me like he’d misheard. “The Moon Goddess? Our Moon Goddess?”

‘Apparently,” Zane said. “She’s been living as her mom. The real mom’s somewhere else.”

The reaction was instant then. They all started talking over each other, disbelief mixing with something sharper.

“She wouldn’t do that.”

“She’s supposed to protect us.”

“This makes no sense.”

“She’s… she’s meant to be good.”

Sheila raised a hand, stepping closer to us. “It was one thing, her being on Earth the whole time and romancing mortals. But kidnapping Lia’s mother and impersonating her? That’s just… evil.”

My stomach twisted. I knew exactly how they felt. I’d spent months picturing Selene as some gentle, watchful figure in the sky, smiling down at us. Not someone who’d steal a life and a family for herself.

Aaron dragged both hands through his hair, pacing. “Everything we’ve been taught-it’s all wrong?”

“Not everything,” Zane said, his voice steady but firm. Like an Alpha’s. “But this? This is real. She isn’t who you thought she was. And we need to deal with it before it gets worse.”

Warner was the first to snap out of it. “Alright. What’s the plan?”

Aaron stopped pacing. “Yeah. What do we do next?”

“We don’t tell the pack,” Zane said immediately. “It would tear them apart. If they find out the Moon Goddess isn’t who they think she is, it’ll destroy their faith. That kind of chaos will weaken us, and we can’t afford that.”

Ajax nodded. “Yeah. It’s best we don’t.”

Sheila frowned. “So we just… keep this to ourselves?”

“For now,” Zane said. “Until we know more. Until we have a way to fix it.”

Ajax crossed his arms. “And what exactly does ‘fix it’ mean?”

“It means we find Lia’s real Mom,” Zane said. He glanced at me, his hand brushing mine. “That’s step one.”

My chest tightened, but this time it wasn’t from panic. It was determination.

“Then let’s start there,” Warner said.

Everyone nodded, and for the first time since Zane told me the truth, the room felt like it had a direction.

What direction exactly? I had no clue.

-LIA’S

POV-

“So what do we know?” Aaron asked, looking at me. “Do we have any idea where Selene might be keeping your Mom?”

I took a slow breath before speaking, staring at the floor. My head felt heavy. “I had another vision a few days ago, like those blackout episodes,” I said quietly, fidgeting with my fingers in my lap. “It was about her. So I guess it was a hint.”

“What was it?” Sheila asked, placing her hand on mine in her usual comforting manner.

“I was in this dark cave,” I explained. “It felt abandoned. Everything echoed, and the only sound was water dripping somewhere in the distance. It was freezing too.” I shivered at the memory of it.

Zane took my other hand in his, squeezing gently.

His small gesture gave me the strength to continue.

No matter what went down, he was here with me.

Always.

“Well, my mom was there. She was chained to the wall. When I first saw her, I called out and I think she heard me. She started crying, begging me to help her. She told me to let her daughter and husband know she was okay.” My voice broke, and I stared down at the floor, swallowing the lump forming in my throat. “I tried going closer, but it was strange. She couldn’t see me, like I wasn’t really there. As if I was a ghost standing in front of her. She kept calling out, but her eyes couldn’t find me.”

The Hounds sat frozen, silent, their gazes full of concern and sympathy.

“Then it got worse,” I whispered. My chest tightened as I spoke. “There were shadows around us, and they started crawling towards her. They weren’t normal shadows. They laughed… this awful, mocking sound. They wrapped around her, and before I could do anything, she was gone. Just… disappeared.”

None of them spoke, but I could see the shock written all over their faces!

Silence fell over us for a moment.

I hugged my arms around myself, trying to stop the chill running through me. “That’s what I saw,” I said finally, shrugging. “That might be where she is.”

“Got it,” Warner gave a nod, standing up. “We begin searching caves. I’m sure we’ll find her, Lia. I’ll also call Sapphire and ask her for help.”

I released a shaking breath and nodded. “Maybe I could help.

Sapphire could help me use my powers properly. She could teach me how to find Mom.”

“Yeah, Lia’s right,” Zane agreed. “Please ask her to come over if you can.”

“I’ll ask.” Warner fished out his phone and left the room.

Aaron stood up next, followed by Ajax. “We’ll gather a search team.”

“I’ll stay with Lia and Zane,” said Sheila, “if anything comes up.”
