I let out a soft growl and set out for home, sniffing the air and plants to help guide the way.
Within a few minutes of running, I was outside the forest, on a road I recognised well enough.
My house was not too far away.
I crossed the rest of the distance in my wolf form, before taking cover behind the trees and shifting back. I quickly put on my clothes and walked up to the door, ringing the doorbell only twice. If she was safe at home, I didn’t wanna freak her out,
My breaths were hitched as I waited outside, fidgeting with the sleeves of my shirt as I tried to push the negative thoughts away.
There was no way what I saw was real.
We’d been in touch.
Before I could spiral completely, the door clicked and opened, allowing me to heave a sigh of relief.
“Mom,” I whispered, stepping forward and pulling her into a hug.
She hugged me back tightly, pressing a kiss to my head. “Hi, honey. What are you doing here? Everything okay?”
“Yes,” I said, not letting her go. “Everything is fine now. I just missed you a lot.”
“I’m right here,” she laughed, tapping my back. “Come on in. Would you like anything to eat?”
“No,” I replied, entering the house and closing the door behind me. “Just need your cellphone. I have to call Zane.”
Her face fell slightly. “Why? Everything okay?”
“Yes, yes,” I reassured. “I just came here without telling him, so I want to inform him that I’m fine.”
“Oh. Of course. I’ll get it.”
“Where’s Dad?” I asked as she went into her bedroom.
“He’s out to get groceries,” she replied.
“Why? Is someone coming over?”
She returned with her cellphone a moment later, handing it to me without hesitation.
“No. I just wanted to cook my husband a nice meal,” she replied, taking a seat on the couch.
I froze for a moment.
“Okay,” I chuckled, dialling Zane’s number.
“What?”
“You hate cooking. You never cook just for Dad. Only for me.”
She blinked, then grinned. “Call it Mom instinct, okay? You’re here now, aren’t you?”
“I guess I am,” I replied, listening to Zane’s caller tone.
He picked up a second later. “Hello?” he asked, breathless.
“Zane, I’m safe,” I said immediately.
He released a heavy breath. “Goddess, Lia. Where the hell did you go?”
“I’ll tell you everything,” I said, glancing at Mom. She was staring at me with a small smile. “For now, I’m at Mom’s. She’s cooking, so you can come over.”
“Okay,” he replied. “I’ll be right there.”
-LIA’S POV-
“You invited him over?” Mom asked, rubbing the back of her neck.
“Yes.” I frowned. “Is that not okay?”
“No, no,” she replied. “It’s fine. Zane is always welcome here. It’s just that, ever since you’ve moved in with him, I’m getting greedy for your time.”
I smiled, taking her hands in mine. “I’m sorry, Mom. I know I’ve been really hung up in my own life. But I promise you, that’s gonna change now. I’ll try my best to visit you and call you as often as I can.”
She smiled, then nodded. “Okay. Take a seat now. Let me work.”
I sat down at the dining table, still trying to shake off the haze in my head.
Mom was moving around like she’d had three cups of coffee in the morning, pulling out pans and humming under her breath. It was relieving to see her like this. Healthy. Unhurt. Safe.
“You look pale,” she said, glancing at me over her shoulder. “You should eat something.”

“I’m fine,” I said automatically, but my voice didn’t sound convincing even to me.
“Fine isn’t good enough, Lia. You need to be doing great.”
I let out a chuckle, feeling the urge to hug her again.
But I didn’t want her to feel like something was wrong, so I resisted.
The front door clicked open, and heavy footsteps entered the house. I was up from my chair before I even realised I’d moved.
“Dad!” I ran to him, throwing my arms around him. His jacket smelled like the supermarket.
“Woah,” he laughed, wrapping one arm around me while he clutched the grocery bag tighter with the other. “Hey, kiddo. What a pleasant surprise. Twice in a week?”
“Don’t guilt-trip me,” I muttered, scowling at him. “I love you guys.”
“We love you too. I’m just glad you’re home. How’s Zane?”
“He’s good.” I grinned. “He’s on his way here.”
“Oh, he’s coming too?”
“Mom is cooking so I thought, why not invite him?”
“Oh, of course. Your Mom has suddenly found her love for cooking. She’s been doing it for me every day this week. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier. Feels like old times again.”
I blinked, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes.
Dad walked up to Mom and put his hands on her waist, kissing her deeply.
My eyebrows shot up a little.
That was… odd.
My parents had always loved each other.
But they were never too big on PDA.
And Mom… she didn’t cook like that. Not for days in a row. She got bored, or busy, or both. I didn’t say anything, but the thought stuck in my head.
“I’ll go change. You girls talk.” Dad went into their bedroom, closing the door.
I glanced at Mom, watching her. But before I could form another coherent thought, there was a sharp knock on the door.
“I’ll get it,” I said, answering it.
Zane was standing there, his eyes searching my face immediately. The moment he saw me, his expression softened, shoulders sagging with relief. He stepped inside, shutting the door behind him, and pulled me straight into his arms.
“You’re okay,” he whispered, his lips brushing my forehead in a quick kiss. Then his mouth lingered near my ear. “What happened?”
I leaned into him, wrapping my arms around his neck, getting onto the tips of my toes. “I had a blackout,” I whispered so only he’d hear me. “Like I used to before the Blood Moon.”
He pulled back just enough to look at me properly, his brow furrowed. “Those were supposed to be over. What’s triggering them again? Is it… Selene?”
I hadn’t considered that. Or even thought about why this happened again as yet. My mind had been fixated on Mom and her safety.
“Lia!” Mom’s voice cut through from the kitchen, a tad louder than necessary. “Come help me, sweetheart!”
Zane’s eyes flicked in the direction of her voice, but he didn’t say anything. He just gave my hand a squeeze before letting me go. “I’ll meet them in a bit. Need to inform the Hounds that everything’s okay.” He fished out his phone from his pocket. “Oh, I brought yours too,” he said, handing me mine.

I nodded, stepping back from him. “Thank you. And it’s fine, take your time. Dad went upstairs to change and Mom is busy anyway. I’ll be right back.”
