Where the hell were we?

“Mom?” I shouted, my fists balling at my sides. “Where are you?”

“Lia?” Her voice was everywhere at once, like she was walking around me.

“I’m here, Mom. Where are you?”

“Help, please,” she sobbed.

Heat burned behind my eyes, and the faint purple glow pushed back some of the shadows.

I was in a cave. The walls were of stone. Water dripped somewhere in the distance, every drop echoing. There didn’t seem to be an exit.

Then my eyes caught a figure against the far wall.

My breath hitched.

I narrowed my eyes, blinking to clear my vision a little more.

It was her.

Kneeling, wrists chained high above her head, ankles bound with heavy iron. Her hair was tangled and her face pale, streaked with dirt. She looked… smaller. Weaker. Like she’d been here for days.

But that wasn’t possible.

I’d met her just a couple of days ago.

We had been talking regularly. More often than we used to.

How could she be here?

This had to be a dream. A nightmare.

But why did it feel so real?

Her eyes were wide, scanning the darkness like she was searching for something she couldn’t find.

“Mom!” I ran towards her, my bare feet slapping against the cold stone. I dropped to my knees in front of her.

She flinched. “Who’s there?”

“It’s me!” I reached for her arm, but my hand went straight through. No resistance.

Like she was a ghost.

Or maybe I was?

She shivered. “Please… whoever you are, tell my daughter I love her. Tell her I’m trying to come home. Just… tell her to be happy.”

“Mom, I’m right here,” My voice cracked. I tried again, reaching for her face, her shoulder, anything-but my fingers passed through like she was smoke.

She didn’t react. She kept staring straight past me.

“Please,” she whispered. “Tell Lia I’m fine. And my husband. Please.”

My stomach twisted. She couldn’t see me. Was I in some kind of vision? Or was she?

I tried to breathe but the air here was too thin.

Like it wasn’t even there.

Almost a vacuum or a void…

Everything within me shuddered.

“Mom, I’ll get you out, I promise,” I said, even though it was useless.

She lifted her head slightly, like she thought she heard something, then sagged again. The chains rattled faintly as she moved.

Somewhere deep in the cave, that low cackle echoed again. Louder. Closer.

I spun around, searching the shadows. The dark figures were moving again, their shapes stretching unnaturally, moving towards us.

“Stay away from her!” I shouted.

When I looked back, she was gone.

The chains still hung there, swinging gently.

-ZANE’S POV-

“Lia?” I called, glancing around the room.

The window was wide open. I didn’t remember it being that way when I left.

Still, I rushed into the washroom, and around the rest of the pack house to make sure she wasn’t here.

She was gone.

Something like this hadn’t happened in months.

My heart hammered in my chest louder than ever before.

Our bond was complete now.

The intensity of what I felt for her was unmatched.

“Lia!” I growled, taking my wolf form.

The Hounds rushed into the main hall, faces alarmed.

“What happened?”

I growled and set out from the pack house.

Within moments, they were all behind me.

Everyone warned me about the Blackstones.

Descendants of traitors. Sons of the man who tried to burn Xamore to the ground.

But now they’re here in my school.

Karl Blackstone is everything I was taught to avoid-smooth, perfect, and far too interested in a princess he shouldn’t touch. But when he looks at me, I forget to breathe.

His brother Elijah is worse. Quiet. Cold. Always watching me like I’m something he’s already claimed.

Now I’m unravelling-caught between a brother who offers everything I thought I wanted… and another whose presence feels like a curse I can’t escape.

CHECK OUT: RUIN ME, ROYAL – TRAPPED BETWEEN BROTHERS.

-LIA’S POV-

My eyes shot open, and I was in the forest again.

Fully clothed, but somehow standing under the shade of a tree with twigs and grass blades all over me. My head ached like I’d slammed it against something. But nothing else hurt.

What the hell just happened?

What was that vision?

It couldn’t be real. It was not possible.

I tapped the pockets of my jeans, but they were empty. If I had my phone on me, I’d immediately call Mom and confirm her safety. But I didn’t, so my best bet was to shift and race home.

But I couldn’t just do that. I had to actually talk to her, feel her touch and hug her to be sure. My heart still pounded, hands still trembling after everything I had seen.

She was one of the few people in the world I couldn’t bear to see hurt. Her, Dad and Christy.

Everyone else I loved was strong. Werewolves, with the ability to heal themselves.

Taking a deep breath, I stripped down to my underwear, laying down my clothes on the forest floor.

Then I transformed immediately, the process still slightly painful as I hadn’t done it enough times yet.

But once I’d turned, the aches vanished at once. I picked up my shirt and jeans in my mouth, so I could change into them before ringing the doorbell.
