My stomach twisted the moment he picked up the call.

Sapphire.

It had to be Sapphire.

She would probably tell him that I called her multiple times.

I completely forgot about that.

“Lia?” Warner frowned, talking on the phone. “You called Sapphire?”

“When?” I muttered, feigning ignorance.

“When?” Warner repeated to her. Then he glanced at me again. “She’s saying half an hour-no, Saph, I don’t think so. We had an exam, our cellphones were in our bags. Lia couldn’t have called you.”

My throat went dry.

I quickly forced a smile, taking discreet breaths to calm my racing heart.

Zane’s hold on me tightened a little.

He knew.

He knew something was up.

“Twice?” Warner said. “Lia, she’s saying you called her twice.”

“I didn’t,” I muttered, checking my phone. “Oh,” I said. “That’s weird. Turns out I did.”

Everyone’s eyes shifted to me, their gazes questioning.

I smiled, looking around at them. “I have no idea how.”

“You don’t?” Zane asked, his tone soft.

I shook my head, blinking at him. “I don’t, Zane. Maybe my phone’s acting up.”

He stared at me silently for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah. Probably.”

No one said anything after. Warner stood up and walked off, still on the call with her.

I swallowed, shifting my focus to the sandwich in front of me.

-ZANE’S POV-

She was clearly hiding something.

But I didn’t understand why. Or what.

I hadn’t left her side since we bonded. She was fine then. She was normal.

So what changed during the exam?

I knew she was lying about Sapphire. She had called her.

Her heartbeat gave it away. The way she lowered her eyes. The way she avoided looking at me, because she knew I could read her face.

But then why didn’t I see her do it?

Or what if I did, and she made me forget? She did say she’d yelled forget it.

But she hadn’t mentioned Sapphire. She never said that she called her. And if she was keeping that from me, there had to be a huge reason for it.

I didn’t know why she bothered lying. She was terrible at it.

We reached home after school, and I acted normal, not questioning her. I needed to get an idea of what this was about first.

So as she sat down to study, I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and left the room to go find Warner.

He was lounging with the Hounds in our usual spot.

“Hey, War, come here for a minute,” I said.

Aaron, Sheila and Ajax were busy bickering about food, so they didn’t pay much attention as he got up and joined me towards the side. “What’s up? All good?” he asked.

“What did Sapphire say?” I asked. “About Lia.”

“Nothing, man, she said she called her twice. Sapphire cut the phone once because she was in the middle of a spell. Then Lia called again, but Sapph didn’t pick up.”

I nodded slowly.

“She’s hiding something, isn’t she?” he asked, leaning his back against the wall.

“I don’t know,” I said softly. “I’m gonna find out.”

I made my way back to our bedroom to ask her again, see if she reveals anything new or I can catch her in the lie.

But when I entered the room, she wasn’t where I left her.

Lia was gone.

-LIA’S POV-

I was barefoot, the ground almost ice cold under my feet. I didn’t know this place. And I had never ended up here before.

The blackouts were supposed to be over. They had stopped once I ascended to my full power. When I gave the command.

Had reversing it messed everything up?

Or was it something else entirely?

Something I wasn’t even considering?

Everything was pitch black. Yet somehow, I could see shadows move. Figures even darker than the surroundings, shifting at the corners of my eyes.

And the air… it smelled familiar. Damp stone. Ash.

Like I had been here before.

But I couldn’t put my finger on it.

How did I get here?

I couldn’t even remember where I was before this. It was like my memories were blurring, mixing together until nothing made sense.

A voice echoed.

Loud enough to make me flinch.

“Lia? Is that you?”

I spun around.

I knew that voice.

I knew it too well.

“Mom?” I whispered, my eyebrows drawing together.

Why was I hearing her?

She couldn’t be here. She was at home. With Dad.

A low cackle filled the silence, curling around me like smoke.

“Got you.”

I turned again, gasping.

Nothing. Just more darkness.

“Help,” Mom’s desperate voice called, followed by the sharp clink of chains.
