“Damari, do you have any idea what happened yesterday?” Dora asked, her voice laced with anger.
“What happened?” Damari replied slowly.
“Corbett was run off the road and ended up in a ditch. If he hadn’t been lucky, he could’ve died. It had to be Andrew. He’s had some trouble lately, so he decided to hurt Corbett. It’s despicable!” Dora’s fists tightened with fury.
“Do you have any evidence linking Andrew to this?” Damari inquired.
“It’s clear as day. Only Andrew would do this to Corbett,” Dora asserted confidently.
“Without evidence, I can’t do anything about it. Bring me something concrete if you want me to get involved.” Damari had no intention of getting entangled in this situation.
Dora was fuming with frustration, feeling that Damari was being unjust. When Andrew’s father was alive, Damari favored him. But now, with Andrew’s father gone, he seemed to have shifted his loyalty to Andrew.
“And what about them?” Dora turned to Bruno, who spoke up. “Remember what you said before? We were supposed to choose the heir to the Klein Group based on the phone sales. With Andrew dragging the company down, he’s no longer fit to be the heir. Our stock price is plummeting, and the internet is full of backlash. If this keeps up, we’re going to face massive losses. It’s time for a change in leadership.”
Corbett watched Damari intently, his own ambitions carefully hidden behind a mask of sincerity. “Grandpa,” he began earnestly, “I’m not looking to be the heir, but this time, Andrew’s been careless, and it’s affecting all of us. People are criticizing us, and we need to restore our reputation. If I return to the Klein Group, I plan to put my company under its umbrella and focus on aggressively developing new technology products.”
“Corbett has had a passion for technology since he was young, and his skills are far beyond most. With his connections to foreign research institutes, he’s poised to lead the country’s tech advancements. Under his leadership, the Klein Group could reach new heights,” Dora said proudly, her eyes on Corbett.
The three of them turned their attention to Damari. Given everything they had said, wasn’t it time for Damari to change the heir?
However, Damari continued his exercises at a leisurely pace. He asked calmly, “Which do you think is better, Howard’s phone or yours?”
Corbett was momentarily taken aback but quickly responded, “Obviously, mine. Howard’s chip is subpar at best.”
“Sounds like you’re not as tuned into technology as Howard is,” Damari said coldly. “I’ve already bought both of your phones and had them checked out by the National Research Institute. Howard’s phone, despite being inexpensive, is of excellent quality and bound to become the future trend. Any issues he and Andrew are facing now will be nothing but a temporary setback.”
None of the three were in a good mood. They hadn’t anticipated that Damari would continue to back Andrew. He had always been partial to Andrew.
No matter how exceptional Corbett was, Damari failed to see it.
Dora couldn’t hold back, exclaiming, “Isn’t it unfair? If Corbett were in Andrew’s shoes and caused such trouble, you’d replace him in a heartbeat! But you won’t do the same for Andrew. Do you want the whole company to be dragged down by him?”
Bruno, hearing his wife’s words, didn’t intervene. Deep down, he felt that Damari was being unjust.
After finishing his exercises, Damari turned his gaze to Dora. His eyes were cloudy yet intense. “If Corbett were in Andrew’s position, this wouldn’t have happened.”
Corbett’s heart raced. Did his grandfather suspect he was behind Andrew’s troubles? Not knowing the full story, he argued, “That’s true. You know Corbett is capable. Why make him the CEO then? Are you really this biased toward Andrew?”
Damari’s expression turned icy. “Dora, is this how you really see me?”
“I don’t want to think that way, but your actions leave us no choice,” Dora shot back immediately.
“Are you trying to pressure me into changing the CEO today?” Damari asked with a frosty tone.
“We can’t force you, but we’re hoping you’ll be fair to both grandsons. Damari, do you really want to see the company ruined by Andrew? Everyone will blame you!” Dora said loudly, not caring if she would anger Damari further for the sake of her son’s future. “The CEO must be changed today!”
A flash of anger crossed Damari’s face, but he quickly clutched his chest, wincing in pain.
Bruno cried out, “Damari, are you okay?”
“Do you share the same opinion as your wife?” Damari gasped, his face contorted with pain, but he still managed to ask the question.
Bruno avoided meeting his gaze and said, “I think Corbett is truly exceptional, but it seems you only favor Andrew. Isn’t that unfair to Corbett?”
“Bruno, over the years, you never really cared about me or the company. Your mind is always preoccupied with…” Damari’s pain made it hard for him to continue.
“Hurry up and call the doctor!” Bruno urged urgently.
Dora was about to leave but hesitated.
Damari had always struggled with health issues. If he became seriously ill now, he might no longer be able to get involved in company matters. At that point, she would work with the board to replace Andrew. Others wouldn’t be as biased as Damari; given the severity of the incident, many might push for Andrew’s replacement.
Noticing she was still standing there, Bruno called out, “What are you waiting for? Go ahead and call the doctor right away!”
“I know. My phone’s in the room. I’ll get it,” Dora replied, then walked slowly into the room. She took her time to call the doctor.
As dusk settled over Ansportr, a piece of news began to spread like wildfire. Damari had fallen ill and was in the hospital. The situation was critical.
The moment Isabella saw the news, she called Andrew immediately.
“How is your grandpa? Has he woken up?”
“His condition is stable, but he’s still unconscious,” Andrew responded hoarsely.
Damari was the only person who had been kind to Andrew in his family, so he must be feeling very anxious right now.
“I’m coming right away,” Isabella said with determination.
Andrew replied, “I’m not at the hospital right now. I’m heading to the Klein Group. Corbett is calling a board meeting—“
“What?” Isabella realized Corbett’s plan. “He’s trying to seize control while your grandpa is in a coma.”
“Yes.” Andrew’s expression darkened. He suspected that Corbett was somehow involved in Damari’s coma. Corbett had crossed a line this time—his ambition for power had driven him to betray his own grandfather.
“Corbett is truly despicable!” Isabella couldn’t help but scold Corbett. “What should we do now? Have you found out what caused the explosion?”
“Not yet, but we have a lead. The victims’ son appears to be missing, which has them very distressed. If we can locate their son, they might reveal the truth.” Andrew glanced at his watch and added, “I have to go now.”
“Alright, you go ahead.”
Once she hung up the phone, Isabella felt a pang of anxiety. “It’s time,” she said as the little boy approached her with his large, dark eyes that resembled grapes.
“Alright,” Isabella said as she scooped up the boy and headed toward the canteen.
She didn’t make the connection between the missing child and the little boy because the couple was over 40, suggesting their child should be at least twenty, while the boy was only four years old.
While they were eating, Isabella got a call from the police.
“We have a couple here who might be the parents of the boy you found earlier.”
“Is that so? Okay. I’ll come over shortly,” Isabella said. “If you have any photos of the couple, please send them over—I’ll show them to the boy.”
Turning to the little boy, Isabella said, “A couple went to the police station, but I’m not sure if they’re your parents.” The boy looked at her with eager anticipation. After a while, Isabella received a photo and clicked on it.
The moment she saw the image, she was taken aback. They were the couple whose phone exploded.
The boy saw the photo as well and exclaimed, “Dad! Mom!”
Isabella was stunned by the boy’s use of “Dad” and “Mom.”
“Are these your parents?” she asked.
“Yeah,” the boy replied with a tearful, childish voice. “Are they looking for me?”
Isabella swirled with emotions. She hadn’t anticipated that the boy she had found was actually that couple’s son.
“I should head over there right away,” she thought. She needed to resolve this matter in person. The boy was unaware of the situation and simply hoped to be reunited with his parents.
After a short drive, they made their way to the police station, but Isabella kept the boy in the car and went inside by herself.
As she entered, she saw the woman speaking to a police officer. “Is our son alright? If anything happened to him, I don’t know how I’d manage. It took so much for me to have him. The doctors said it was nearly impossible for me to get pregnant…”
Hearing this, Isabella finally realized why the couple, despite being in their forties, had such a young child. It was clear they deeply cared about him.
“Don’t worry. Your child is safe. He was kidnapped by human traffickers, but luckily, a young lady rescued him. He’s doing well,” the police officer reassured the woman.
“Oh, that’s great news!”
