She saved my world from falling apart.

Just like a mother was supposed to.

“Lia?” Zane strode inside the washroom, closing the door and locking it.

My eyes widened and I backed away from him, gaping. “You’re not supposed to be in here, Zane.”

“Are you crazy?” he asked, walking towards me.

I backed away from him, lowering my gaze, afraid that he’d read my eyes.

“What’s going on? Why are you running away from me?” he asked.

My back hit the wall, forcing a gasp from my lips.

Zane closed the space between us, gently taking my arms. “Lia, look at me.

I squeezed my eyes shut. “I’m fine.”

“Clearly not. What happened?”

I shook my head. “Nothing.”

“Lia,” Zane insisted, taking my chin and tipping my face up. “I said, look at me.”

I swallowed hard, and then opened my eyes, meeting his dark gaze.

“What’s going on?” he asked slowly, his tone low.

“It-it feels like you’re threatening me,” I whispered.

Zane narrowed his eyes, then leaned in and pressed his lips against mine.

Instantly, the bond stirred within me, and everything else felt like a blur.

My heartbeat steadied, my nerves loosened, and the knots in my stomach came undone.

I rested my hands on his shoulders, then threw my arms around his neck and pulled him closer.

No matter the situation, no matter what happened, he was my anchor.

He pulled a little too soon.

“You can’t distract me,” he stated, still holding onto my chin. “Tell me what happened.”

I stared at him, my eyes slightly glassy.

I felt like telling him.

The truth. All of it.

But Selene’s words kept replaying in my head.

She’d told me to keep it a secret.

And she was the Moon Goddess.

There had to be a reason why she’d ask me to do that.

I knew Zane didn’t trust her after he found out the truth.

And I didn’t either.

But she’d helped me. Pulled me out of an impossible situation just like a mother would.

I bit my lip.

“Lia, you’re scaring me now,” he whispered. “What is it?”

“You’ll think it’s stupid,” I muttered, my chest tight again.

“I don’t care. Just tell me.”

“I almost lost control, Zane. During the exam. My heart started racing and my head spun. I-I almost exposed us all.”

Zane frowned, leaning closer to me. “When? How did I not notice?”

I swallowed. “I managed to contain it and then I kind of yelled out, ‘Forget it’. Maybe that’s why no one noticed.”

His face fell a little, frown deepening. “Lia,” he said softly, “why would you do that? You know your commands don’t work like you expect them to sometimes. What you did was really risky, my love.”

I pursed my lips, nodding. “I know, I messed up. That’s why I didn’t wanna tell you.”

“Please don’t do that again,” he said, pulling me to his chest. “You have to be careful with your powers, baby. Especially around humans.”

“I-I know,” I whispered.

That was exactly why I didn’t use them.

Why I let Selene handle it.

But I was afraid he’d freak out even more if I told him the truth.

“And next time, please just tell me. We’ll handle it together, alright?”

I swallowed again, my throat so dry it almost hurt.

“Yeah,” I rasped. “I know.”

“Good.” He pressed a kiss to my head. “Come on. Let’s go and do what nerds like.”

I frowned up at him. “What?”

“Discuss answers,” he teased, and finally, a smile took over my lips.

“I hate you.” I punched his chest.

“Ow. I love you too. Let’s go.”

-LIA’S POV-

“What was he thinking?” Christy snapped, slamming her bag on the cafeteria table. “He barely even taught us any of that.”

Sheila laughed, “How would you know if he did? When did we attend classes this year?”

“I did,” Christy retorted. “More than you guys at least.”

“Sure,” Warner chuckled. “I bet you were staring at Nathan the whole time.”

Nathan smiled, pulling her closer by the waist.

“I studied, alright?” Christy grumbled. “Unlike you guys. But I still couldn’t solve half of it.”

“I bet our nerd here knew it all,” Ajax commented, and everyone turned to me.

“Oh yeah, how was your exam, Lia? You’ve been awfully quiet,” Aaron said.

“She probably doesn’t wanna hurt our feelings,” Sheila teased. “She’s gonna score full, I’m sure.”

Zane pulled my chair closer to his, putting an arm around me.

“She is a genius, after all.”

I smiled, lowering my gaze. “It’s not like that, guys. We’re all in the same boat. This year has been so crazy, I had literally no time to study.”

Ajax scoffed. “She’s doing that thing where smart people say, ‘I’m so gonna fail!’ and then win medals and prizes.”

“Yeah, yep,” the others agreed in unison.

I laughed. “I’m not, I swear. I’m telling the truth.”

“Time will tell,” Warner said, narrowing his eyes at me.

I smiled at him, matching his expression.

His phone rang then, breaking off our staring contest. He glanced at the screen and his eyes lit up.
