All my friends, my classmates, turned into statues with a single command.

This was a curse.

Being her daughter was a curse.

I’d thought it was a gift.

But no.

This would be my undoing.

I took a gulp of air, trying to think. To get my mind to work.

All my closest confidants were in this room.

Except one person.

Sapphire.

Maybe… maybe she could help.

I quickly grabbed my phone from my bag and dialled her, my heart in my throat.

The line rang once. Twice. Three times.

And then it went silent.

With shaking fingers, I tried again.

But this time, it didn’t even ring.

“Please,” I begged, dialling again.

Still nothing.

I glanced up, and my eyes fell on a phone pointed at me.

My stomach twisted harder, as I wondered if any of them were live-streaming.

It was over.

Everything was destroyed.

I’d been exposed to the entire world for what I was-a monster.

“Lia?”

My head snapped to the door, and a cry of relief left my lips when I saw who it was.

“Selene,” I whispered, running towards her with no hesitation.

She took me into her embrace, rubbing my back, shushing me softly. “It’s okay, honey. It’s alright. Relax.”

“My life is over,” I sobbed into her shoulder. “It’s over.”

“No, no it’s not,” she replied, pulling away and cupping my cheeks. “You think I’m gonna let that happen? No, sweetheart.” She wiped away my tears, and somehow, her touch had me relaxing. My claws went back in, the heat in my eyes disappeared and my skin returned to normal.

“Help me,” I whispered, sniffing.

“Of course,” she replied. “Take a deep breath.”

I obliged, gasping for air.

“Slowly, slowly,” she said, rubbing my arms. “My beautiful daughter.”

I felt my heart rate slow down a little, and I stared at her, at the concern in her gaze as she guided me.

“Okay. Good girl. Better,” she nodded. “Now, get back and let me handle this.”

Something inside me broke as I quickly stepped behind her, watching her as she stepped forward and raised her hands.

The room glimmered a bright silver, and Selene’s feet rose from the ground.

My throat burned with sobs as she waved a hand, and everyone in the room moved at once, calmly returning to their seats and grabbing their pens and papers. The ones who had been recording did something on their phones, probably deleting the videos they had captured, and placed their phones back in their bags. Everyone-the teacher, Zane and the Hounds included-went back to the moment before I lost my shit.

The room froze again once everyone was seated, after even the ones who had left the room had returned.

Selene gently lowered to the floor and turned to me, pushing my hair away from my face.

“There. No one will remember any of it, alright? Don’t worry. I got you, Lia.”

I sniffed, another cry tearing from my lungs as I threw my arms around her, pulling her into a hug.

“Thank you,” I whispered. “Mother, thank you.”

She stiffened for a second, probably out of surprise, then melted into my arms, hugging me back.

“I’m here, baby. I’m sorry for all the years I wasn’t. You were right. I should have visited you before. But I’m here now. Everything will be fine.”

I pulled away from her, clasping her hands in mine. “It’s okay,” I said. “I don’t care. Thank you for coming to me.”

She kissed my forehead, smiling widely. “Now go quickly. Finish your exam. Then I’ll unfreeze the time and no one will know what happened. Don’t tell anyone, alright? Not even Zane.”

I blinked, something inside me unsettling.

“Why?” I asked. “He-he should know you helped.”

She smiled, shaking her head. “He doesn’t need to know. Trust me. Okay?”

I swallowed, then nodded.

She was probably right.

He would worry for no reason.

We just bonded.

This situation was dealt with.

“Okay,” I whispered, turning away from her and taking my seat. “Thank you, Mother.”

-LIA’S POV-

Just like Selene had promised, the moment she left the room, everyone moved again.

My heart continued to knock against my ribs as I glanced around the room, searching for any odd behaviour.

“Ms. Snow!” the teacher snapped, making me jump in my seat. “Eyes on your own paper.”

I did as he said and released a trembling breath, ignoring Zane’s gaze on me,

He knew something was wrong. Something was up.

But he couldn’t ask right now.

So I went back to my exam with shaking hands, trying to complete as much as I could in the last few minutes.

The bell rang a few minutes later, and we were asked to put our pens down.

Mine clattered against the desk, and I clasped my hands together to prevent them from shaking so much.

“Lia,” Zane whispered, leaning towards me. “What’s wrong?”

I closed my eyes shut. “Shh. Stop talking to me. We still have our papers.”

Thankfully, he listened.

The exam papers were collected, and I immediately stood up, hurrying out of the class and rushing to the ladies’ washroom. I closed the door and leaned against the sink, glad that there was a place Zane couldn’t follow me inside.

I took a deep breath to calm my heart.

Nothing happened.

Selene handled it.
