“Shut up, you guys,” she whisper-yelled at them, also shooting me a look. “You’re an idiot, Zane.”

I chuckled. “They would’ve smelled it on us anyway.”

“You could’ve waited for that to happen.”

I shrugged.

My gaze met with Christy’s as I looked around the room, and her eyes were narrowed slightly.

She raised her head to ask me ‘what’, and I shook mine. ‘Later’, I mouthed to her. She went back to talking to Nathan.

Final exams were starting, and I knew for certain that none of us were prepared.

Warner and Ajax weren’t even trying to hide it.

They were both fast asleep on their desks, and Ajax was even snoring.

Normally, maybe I’d be doing the same.

But Lia still had a bit of a nerd left in her, so she would have killed me if I tried that.

I’d told her it didn’t matter how the exam was. They weren’t going to kick us out of the school or fail us. We had agreements with influential people in place. They let us keep up our disguise as normal school going humans, and in return, we ‘left them alone’.

As if we were just waiting around for a chance to hurt humans.

It was funny but whatever worked.

The teacher entered the classroom with a stack of papers, and slammed them onto his desk.

“Everyone. Stop talking now. The exam is about to start. If I see anyone trying to play funny, I will cancel your exam.”

The usual warnings continued, and I squeezed Lia’s hand under the desk.

She almost jumped, shooting me a look.

I grinned, not glancing at her.

I couldn’t believe she was finally completely mine.

-LIA’S POV-

I glanced up at the clock.

There were barely ten minutes left, and I still had to attempt an entire question of integration.

The old Lia would have been rechecking her answers right now.

But this new one had too much going on in her head and life to be able to math.

“Last ten minutes are left,” the teacher shouted, deliberately being louder than was needed to make us all jump in our seats. I could swear he snickered after.

I rolled my eyes and went back to my paper, starting the question.

It wasn’t too hard-that I knew.

But just as I drew the integration sign, a sharp pain broke out in the back of my head.

Sharp enough to make me drop my pen, and pull an ‘ah’ from my lips.

Zane grabbed my hand at once, scooting closer to me. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

My ears rang, black dots infiltrating the corners of my eyes.

I blinked down at the exam paper, as the teacher walked up to us, yelling.

Zane argued with her, but the words were all distant and distorted.

I couldn’t make out what they were saying.

The paper was yanked away from my table, and I clenched my jaw, glancing up.

Heat filled my eyes without warning, and gasps broke out in the classroom as the teacher backed away from me with wide eyes.

“Lia,” Zane shouted, clasping a hand over my eyes.

But it was too late.

I forced Zane’s hand away and stood up, looking around.

People were screaming, chairs were scraping back and they were all running out of the classroom. Some of them had their phones out, cameras pointing at me, recording.

My claws had surfaced.

My eyes were glowing purple.

Canines pricked my tongue.

I had just been exposed to a bunch of high school kids who wouldn’t stop talking for years.

I had to do something.

If I didn’t, I would be all over social media within minutes.

-LIA’S POV-

The classroom froze around me, everyone stopping in their tracks, halting whatever they were doing.

I blinked, looking around at their terrified faces.

Rhonda and her friends, the teacher, even Christy and the

Hounds.

My gaze moved to Zane, and his expression broke something inside me.

His eyes were wide, his mouth open mid-shout, arms extended towards me.

My eyes were gleaming purple, claws were out, and skin glowed an odd silver.

For a moment, the world came crashing down around me.

What was I supposed to do?

How long would they stay frozen?

I couldn’t handle this alone.

I needed help.

I took a deep breath, turning fully to Zane. “Zane,” I choked, “move.”

But he didn’t oblige.

*****

He didn’t even blink.

He was a statue.

“Zane,” I said again, my tone growing more desperate. I stepped closer to him, my heart and head pounding in sync. “Move.

Unfreeze.”

Nothing.

I swallowed down the bile that rose up my throat.

My hands trembled as I touched his, thinking about shaking him.

But what if I hurt him? What if he was actually frozen and anything I tried to do ended up breaking something?

How did this happen?

A sob left my lips, and I stepped back, away from him.

I looked around the classroom.
