“Did you do something to her?”

I pursed my lips to suppress a laugh.

Zane glanced from Dad to me.

“No, sir. I would never hurt her.”

“I’m not asking about hurting her.”

“Honey,” Mom scolded, thankfully intervening. “What’s wrong with you? Stop embarrassing the children.”

I smiled, my eyes on the floor.

“If you ever hurt her, Zane Adams, you won’t live to see another day, you hear me?” Dad warned. “You are going to marry her, right?”

“Dad,” I cried.

“Of course,” Zane replied without hesitation. “I absolutely will. She doesn’t want to just yet, or I’d already be shopping for a ring and a white dress.”

“Do your parents know about her?”

“Yes, Dad,” I reassured. “They do.”

“Okay, well,” Mom said, changing the subject as she shut the door. “I am so happy to see you both here. You spend the night, understand? I’m not letting you both go. You promised to visit often and you’ve barely shown us your face, Lia.” you

“I’m sorry,” I said, taking her hands. “I’m here now, I promise. I was just really busy adjusting.”

“It’s alright.” She kissed my forehead. “Come on, take a seat. Zane, come, honey.”

-LIA’S POV-

The drive back to the pack house was uneasy.

I couldn’t stop thinking about what she wanted.

Why she went to my house to see my parents.

They said she simply asked them about me. About how I was doing, what I liked and disliked, what my hobbies were. Whether or not Zane was the ideal partner for me. Whether or not I was happy.

None of it made sense to me.

Why go to see them after she disappeared from the pack house?

After she literally had the chance to ask me everything directly and decided not to?

It felt like a warning of some kind.

Like she was daring us to ask her to go back.

Like she knew exactly what we were going to say to her when we saw her again.

Her visit to my parents’ house was a declaration.

She was still in control of everything, even if she was down here and didn’t know much of what was happening.

“You okay?” Zane asked, trying to sound concerned.

I mean, he probably was, but more than concerned, he was disappointed tonight. And he was trying to hide it.

We’d finally completed our bond. We were finally one.

And yet, we’d barely got any time to enjoy it.

Honestly, with how things had been going lately, I was surprised we weren’t interrupted in the middle of the deed.

“I’m sorry, Zane,” I replied, placing my hand on top of his and lacing our fingers. “I know you’re upset our moment got destroyed again.”

He frowned. “There’s nothing to be sorry about, love. You didn’t do anything, none of it is your fault. And no power in the universe can destroy this moment for me. Alright?” He kissed my hand, and I squealed as tingles erupted throughout my body.

Zane laughed as I pulled my hand free of his, gaping at him.

“What was that?” I asked.

“Just a completed bond, Lia.” He chuckled.

“I… it didn’t feel that intense at the school,” I muttered.

“Oh it absolutely did,” he replied. “You were just too caught up in the moment.”

Was I?

I thought back to the events of the library, and my cheeks flamed.

“Yeah, that sounds about right,” I whispered.

Zane extended his hand again as we pulled through the gates of the pack house. I eyed it dubiously.

“What?” He laughed, grabbing my hand himself, parking the car.

“Hey,” I scolded as my heart leapt in my chest.

Zane turned to me, eyes narrowed. “Shut up,” he said, pressing a finger to my lips. I shuddered against his touch, “Learn to live with it, baby. You’re not getting a moment away from me anymore. Is that clear?” His blue eyes darkened, and a shiver crawled through me.

“Yeah,” I whispered, blinking at him. “Okay.”

“Good girl.” He leaned in and pressed a kiss to my nose, making me smile and lower my gaze. Zane pulled away with a victorious smile, and pinched my cheek. “Are you gonna be blushing like this all the time now?”

I giggled, pushing his hand off with my free one. “I don’t know.”

He grabbed both my wrists in one of his hands, and pushed them down against my thighs. “Don’t push me away, love. Not even a little bit.”

I laughed, struggling to free myself. Somehow, it felt like he’d gotten even stronger.

“Why do I feel like you’re not even gonna let me go to the bathroom without you?”

Zane’s eyes glistened with mischief, and a grin spread across his lips. “Ah, you just ruined my surprise.”

“More of a shock.” I laughed.

“Liar,” he teased, narrowing his eyes. “You’re as excited about it as I am. Listen to your heartbeat if you don’t believe me.”

He wasn’t wrong. I was excited, and my heart was raging like it wanted to fight its way out of me.

“Fine,” I whispered. “You’re right. What are you gonna do about it?”

“Oh, you’ll see.”

He grabbed me off my seat, pulling me into his lap despite the scream I let out in protest.

I threw my hands around his neck, laughing as he stepped out of the car with me, kicking the door closed.

“We’re not married yet, Zane, you should save this for our wedding night,” I teased as he carried me inside.

“Was I not clear when I asked you to shut up?”

I laughed harder, staring up at his beautiful face as we ascended the stairs to our bedroom.

Whatever was going on with the Moon Goddess, we’d deal with it tomorrow.

-ZANE’S POV-

The school year was finally ending.

After everything that went down, it felt like it had stretched on forever.

Lia’s hand was clasped in mine as we raced down the corridor, reaching the classroom just before the bell went off. We quickly entered and took our seats, hearts hammering, our clear stationery pouches clutched in our free hands.

“Where were you guys?” Sheila whispered behind me. “We thought you forgot.”

I turned to glance at her and gave her a grin.

Her mouth formed a knowing ‘O’ and then she smiled widely.

“Congratulations,” she whispered, while Aaron made kissing sounds to tease me.

Lia turned to them too, her eyes wide and face red.
