A heavy silence fell upon us,
Grunting, I let go of him, and stepped away, calming myself down. Once my eyes returned to normal, Aaron dared to speak to me.
“Alpha,” he said softly, still not having the guts to address me by my name. “Is she our future Luna?”
“Yes,” I replied, then paused. “Possibly.”
“Possibly?” he asked.
“Lia is my mate,” 1 announced.
Their mouths fell open.
“But she’s human,” Sheila said softly. “Our pack is one of the strongest in town. How will a human girl lead us?”
I shot her a look, and she immediately lowered her gaze. “I don’t mean any disrespect, Zane. I am just voicing out what each of us is thinking. Even if we ignore the years of pranks we’ve pulled on her, why would she want this?”
“Because she’s a nobody,” Ajax said softly. “With all due respect, of course.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Her humanity is the least of our concerns,” I said. “There is another problem.”
“Blake Walker,” Warner said softly, frowning. He was still slightly shaken up by my outburst.
“Right,” Sheila said. “Why is that guy so interested in her? We thought maybe she is his mate.”
I clenched my jaw
“She is.”
“What?” Aaron said incredulously. “You said she’s yours.”
“She is.”
The four of them glanced at each other, then at me, waiting for me to elaborate.
My mind drifted off to my birthday.
I’d spent the last sixteen years of my life waiting for this moment. For this day. The day I’d turn sixteen and finally find my mate. The one who would go on to rule beside me, the one who would become my strength and my weakness, the one who would be my queen, my Luna. I had spent long nights wondering what she’d look like, what she’d sound like. And most of all, how she would make me feel.
The second I’d turn sixteen, if she was anywhere closeby, our hearts would call out to each other, draw us towards each other until our gazes would meet.
If she was a werewolf, which was the most common and likely case, and she hadn’t turned sixteen, she would feel half the pull. If she was already sixteen, she would have already found met and informed me of our bond. But she hadn’t, so she had to be younger than me, or she had to be human.
Having a human mate wasn’t preferred for Alphas like me. It wasn’t opposed, as no one could dare to question the Goddess’s decisions, but it wasn’t entirely appreciated. For Alphas, human mates proved to be a vulnerability, a liability, and most Alphas turned their mates. Some of them did it by force, which worked out fine for them, because as soon as the human became at werewolf, they felt the bond too and did not want it any other way. Others took their time to convince their mates for it. Sooner or later, they agreed.
But there were some who left it completely up to their human mates. And I had decided I would be one of them. If I had a human mate, I wasn’t going to kidnap her or force her to be with me. I wasn’t going to lock her in a room and visit her and spend time with her until she’d fall for me. I would let her be, stay close and be good to her, until she wouldn’t be able to resist and finally give in to me. Until then, I would respect her choices. Protect her, not coerce her.
But never in a million years could I have suspected what actually happened.
The second the clock struck twelve, a face flashed before my eyes. A scent filled my nose, one I recognised immediately. My heart went into a wild frenzy, my wolf taking over my body without giving me a chance to retaliate.
I was out on the streets, rushing towards the scent, towards the aura. Towards the presence.
It brought me to a house. A normal, simple house, on a normal, simple street.
I tried the door, and it was open.
My mate was not just human, she was also naive.
And I had a very strong idea who it was.
But I couldn’t be sure. Not until I saw her. Not until I looked her in the eye and sniffed her neck.
I marched inside her house, the pictures on the walls confirming my suspicions. It was her house. It was probably her.
But no, how could that be? Lia Snow could not be my mate. Because if she was, getting her to fall for me would be much harder than I’d thought.
I heard and felt her upstairs, and made my way up, stopping at a door.
-ZANE’S POV-
Without a doubt, my mate was on the other side of it. A low growl escaped my lips. I wanted her immediately. I needed her close to me. My heart pounded with anticipation.
I heard her footsteps inside, and a small, tiny whimper.
She’d heard me, definitely.
I should have left her alone. I should have simply walked away.
But there was no way I was leaving without seeing my mate. I needed her. I needed her close.
So I broke her door down and entered her room, making her let out a loud scream. She froze when she saw me, tears rolling down her cheeks, her heart beating so loud I was afraid she would collapse. She wasn’t wearing her glasses, her brown eyes glassy and shining with tears. Her chest heaved up and down as she struggled to breathe, staring at me with nothing but terror in her gaze.
I wanted to reassure her. I wasn’t going to hurt her. She could relax.
I stepped towards her, only for her to back away, stumbling over a fold in the carpet and falling down. Goddess, she was clumsier than I thought. But so adorable.
Her sobs had filled the room, and I could see there was nothing I could do to calm her down. Nothing except leaving her alone. So I had to do that quickly. I didn’t want my mate to be scared of me. I didn’t want to torment her. She was just a tiny human.
My Little Lia. sta
She shuffled away from me, backing entirely against the wall. I smiled to myself. She’d just trapped herself for me.
I moved closer to her, my movements slow and careful, not wanting to scare her more than she already was. I lowered my head to her level, and stared into her eyes for a moment. Now that I was close enough, I realised just how beautiful she was. I’d always known it, but I never paid heed to it, considering her nothing but a classmate. And my birthday twin. And a cute little nerd my Hounds liked to play with.
Now she was mine. Now only I could play with her.
She closed her eyes shut, and I leaned it to her neck, her entire figure trembling like a leaf. Goddess, I wanted to kiss her. I wanted to mark her as mine. Claim her that very instant. But doing so would only frighten her further. She would definitely pass out.
I let out a growl to distract myself, and using every bit of strength I had in me, I pulled away from her.
I had to leave before I lost control.
I had to leave before I’d accidentally hurt her and lose her forever.
“That is so cute,” Sheila cooed, smiling at me. “Who could’ve thought that nerdy girl would turn out to be our Luna?”
“She has a name,” I stated.
“Right, sorry,” Sheila nodded.
“But what’s the deal with Blake Walker?” Warner asked. “If she is your mate, why does he have his eyes on her? How can she be your mate and his too?”
“It’s rare but it happens,” Ajax said. “I heard about it once.”
“The Goddess works in mysterious ways,” Aaron added, shrugging. “But the question is… will you be able to share her,
Zane?”
“I’m not gonna share her,” I growled. “She’s a human, not a toy. And I’m not a child. She will have to make a choice, of course.”
“You’re gonna leave it up to her?” Warner asked, shocked. “She would never choose you, Zane. She hates us.”
“She hates you guys,” I replied. “Not me.”
“Are you sure?” Sheila asked.
“Yes. I’ve had enough moments with her to make that clear. She wants me as much as I want her. Her entire body reacts to me.”
“That’s probably due to the bond,” Ajax said softly. “We have tortured her for the last ten years, Alpha. Why would she trust you now?”
“Did you not hear her today?” Aaron said. “She trusted he will stop us.”
“Yeah, and I broke it,” I said, sighing. “I hadn’t told you guys. and I didn’t expect her to announce it like that. I should have told you guys beforehand and then stood by her side.”
“Yeah, you should have,” said Sheila. “You just let Blake become a hero in front of her again.”
“That’s okay,” I shook my head, “I’ll pay her a visit tonight and reassure her.”
“Tonight?” Sheila teased. “How long has this been going on?”
I rolled my eyes, but felt an odd heat in my checks. What was this weird feeling?
“Since my sixteenth birthday. I thought that was clear.”
