Everyone shook their heads in sympathy.
In the restroom, the woman couldn’t hold back her tears any longer.
The truth was, she had liked Howard for a long time. As a technician, she greatly admired his abilities. Beyond that, he was kind, polite, and an all-around amazing person. She had put in so much effort just to be by his side. Finally, when she got the chance to work with him, she found out he had a girlfriend.
Overwhelmed, she couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. Nearby, someone commented, “Wow, my favorite celebrity is absolutely stunning!”
“Did she post any new photos? Let me check. Wow, she looks amazing. I knew she would be a big hit the first time I saw her.”
Hearing the voices, the woman quickly wiped away her tears, not wanting anyone to notice her distress. As she turned to leave, she caught a glimpse of their phones, displaying photos of a woman that seemed oddly familiar.
The woman was stunning, her face almost doll-like in its perfection. Yet, despite her beauty, there was something genuine and serene in her eyes—a simplicity that was undeniably captivating.
Wait a minute… wasn’t this the same woman she had seen in Howard’s room that day?
“Excuse me, could you tell me who this is?” she asked quickly.
The waitress, thrilled to share her enthusiasm, eagerly explained, “Oh, that’s Milly Duncan, my absolute favorite star! You might not recognize the name since she’s new. She just started in her first TV drama, and her acting is really impressive. I first liked her for her beauty, but she turned out to be incredibly hardworking too. Isn’t she gorgeous? I have photos if you’d like to see.” The waitress swiped to another photo.
The woman was left speechless.
There was no denying it—Milly was breathtakingly beautiful. In fact, she couldn’t remember the last time she had seen someone quite this gorgeous.
But then a troubling thought crossed her mind. Was Howard the type to prioritize looks? She had believed he wasn’t focused on appearances, but it seemed he was just like any other man.
For a moment, she felt her fascination with Howard wane.
Seeing the woman in a daze, the waitress assumed she was stunned by Milly’s beauty. “You should follow her on social media!”
“No, that’s okay,” she snapped out of her thoughts and left.
The waitress was puzzled by her reaction.
After the celebration party, everyone headed back home.
As Elaine got into the car, she asked Howard, “You have a girlfriend? Who is she?”
Elaine was absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed. All her sons had been single for a while, and now two of them were in relationships. She could hardly believe it. Could this mean she might soon have a grandchild?
“Mom, I was lying. I just didn’t want my colleague to have feelings for me.” Howard’s words hit Elaine like a thunderclap, shattering her hopes.
“What? It’s all a lie?” Elaine’s smile vanished. “Well… I actually think she’s a great girl. She seems quite taken with you.”
“I just want to focus on work,” Howard replied firmly.
Elaine sighed inwardly, wondering if Howard was still hurt by his past with Tatiana. The thought of Tatiana saddened her. “I truly regret letting you get engaged to Tatiana. I should have known better.”
“It’s all in the past, Mom. No need to dwell on it,” Howard said with a calm demeanor.
Elaine fell silent, her sadness evident.
Isabella glanced at Howard and stayed silent.
Once they were home, she called Howard and asked, “Why didn’t you tell Mom about your relationship with Milly?” She was curious whether Howard had any real feelings for Milly.
“I’m afraid Mom might not approve of Milly. Besides, Milly isn’t confident about herself right now,” Howard replied.
Isabella was direct. “I think you’re overthinking it. Mom likes Milly, for sure. She wants you to be happy.”
“Alright, I understand. But Milly prefers to keep our relationship private for now. She doesn’t think she is good enough for me. Despite my reassurances, she wants to wait until she is more successful in her career before making our relationship public.”
“Fine,” Isabella said, respecting Milly’s wishes. But Milly didn’t seem like someone who would feel inferior. She appeared detached and indifferent to everything, almost robotic, except when she was with Howard, where she showed a range of emotions.
The more Isabella thought about it, the more concerned she became. “Howard, I’m not sure if I should say this, but I have a feeling Milly might not be an ordinary woman.”
“What makes you say so?” Howard asked gently.
Isabella noticed that Howard didn’t seem upset by her observation, so she continued, “Milly may appear simple, but she’s actually quite cold. She shows no emotion when interacting with others. Only when she looks at you does she display any feelings.”
Her thoughts wandered to the notion of a professional killer—someone trained to be emotionally detached.
Howard smiled and cheerfully replied, “She’s been through a lot, and now she relies on me. That’s why she only shows her emotions with me.”
Isabella was taken aback, not expecting that response. It was clear that Howard was deeply invested in Milly. Isabella took a deep breath, thinking of Dane and realizing that love often made people a bit foolish. She knew that Dane’s choice was good, but Howard’s—well, she had her doubts.
With Howard being love-struck and not thinking clearly, she decided it was pointless to continue the conversation and quickly ended the call.
The night was tranquil, except for one bustling location: Milly’s film set.
Milly was about to perform a challenging martial arts scene on the wire.
Victor, concerned about her safety, asked if she could handle it. Given that it was her first acting gig and a tough scene, even a professional might struggle.
Milly confidently replied, “I can do it.”
Victor reassured her, “You don’t need a stunt double. Start learning from the martial arts coach.”
Milly then went to the martial arts coach.
Nearby, Tatiana watched Milly with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. Was Milly really dating Howard?
As Tatiana pondered this, someone passed by, saying, “We need to tell Victor that the wire is too old. If we keep using it, it could be dangerous.”
Tatiana regained her composure and glanced at the two staff members. She then stood up and stopped them. The staff members were respectful to Tatiana.
“Tatiana, is something wrong?”
Tatiana leaned in and whispered a few instructions. The staff members hesitated but eventually headed back, following her directions.
Sitting back down, Tatiana felt a surge of satisfaction. One of the assistants guessed her intentions, saying, “Tatiana, if Milly falls from that height, she could be seriously injured.”
Tatiana smirked. “It would just be bad luck for her.”
Half an hour later, after Victor wrapped up a scene, he went to check on Milly’s progress. He found the martial arts coach, Kendall Hilton, lying on the ground with Milly standing nearby.
“Kendall, why are you on the ground? Didn’t I ask you to teach her to fight while standing?” Victor demanded.
Kendall was at a loss for words. He had fallen to the ground suddenly, unsure of what had just happened. Having a background as a mercenary, Kendall felt uneasy around Milly, who seemed oddly intimidating.
“She’s fine. Go ahead,” Kendall said.
“Okay, let’s go.”
With that, Milly took her place on the wire.
The crew prepared for the next shot. Victor called, “Action!”
As the wire lowered, everyone watched in anticipation. Suddenly, the wire snapped, leaving only half of it intact and shaking wildly, with Milly swinging dangerously. Panic erupted among the crew.
“The wire snapped!” someone cried out.
Victor, furious, shouted, “Who checked the wire? Get the actress down immediately!”
But it was already too late. The remaining half of the wire snapped, sending Milly hurtling through the air. It was a three-story plunge. If she hit the ground, she faced either death or serious injury.
The crew screamed in terror, but Tatiana alone watched with a sinister gleam of satisfaction and anticipation in her eyes. “Go to hell, Milly! If you’re gone, Howard will be mine. He was never yours to begin with!” she muttered to herself.
However, when panic gripped everyone, Milly twisted mid-air, landing with astonishing grace. She rolled smoothly a few times before standing up, composed and unshaken. She stood among the crew, her gaze icy and unmoved. In that moment, she seemed to command the night like a dark queen.
