How would I word it?
Warner was the first to notice our return, and he quickly alerted the others.
They all turned to us, their gazes expectant.
“Well?” Sheila asked, staring at me. “How is she? Did you hold her hand?”
“Did she like you?” Aaron asked, eyes narrowed.
“Was she glowing silver?” Christy muttered, more to herself.
Lia and I remained silent.
“What’s wrong?” Warner asked, stepping forward.
Lia looked at me, and I nodded. It was better if they knew.
“Well,” she sighed, then cleared her throat. “She’s not Selene.”
All of them frowned.
“She goes by Sarah now.’
“What?” they asked in unison.
Lia smiled and it didn’t reach her eyes. Yeah. She said her name gives her away. Sarah is cooler. And it keeps her identity a secret when she walks around falling in love and having babies which she later gives aw-
!!
“Lia,” I whispered, lightly squeezing her hand.
She gave me a pointed look. “What? You wanna sugarcoat it?”
I pressed my lips into a thin line. “A little bit, yeah. Let me tell them, please.”
“Be my guest.”
I turned to the Hounds, wondering why I thought letting Lia speak first was a good option.
“Yeah,” I said, rubbing the back of my neck. “She goes by Sarah now. Apparently she’s been on earth for the last seventeen years.”
Warner’s eyes narrowed. “Seventeen?”
“Yes,” I replied. “She fell in love with Lia’s dad. Stayed behind. Said she couldn’t leave him. Even after she gave her away, she didn’t go back. He left her then, but she still remained on Earth. Said she fell in love with it.”
No one spoke, their faces blanched and eyes wide. Dubious, even.
They were waiting for me to burst out laughing.
“That’s why things have been messed up,” I continued. “Multiple mates, witch mates, bonds clashing… it’s all because the Moon Goddess hasn’t been watching over the system. She left her post, basically.”
“So who is up there then?” Ajax asked, staring at the moon. “What the hell?”
“Some imposter. Even the Moon Goddess doesn’t know anything if she isn’t up there.”
“So what now?” Sheila asked softly. “Is she staying forever? That would cause chaos.”
“We thought about talking to her,” Lia said. “To convince her to go back and fix things. But when we came back to the lounge, she was gone.”
“Gone where?” Warner asked.
“No clue,” I said. “Just vanished.”
There was another stretch of silence.
“Should we look for her?” Ajax finally asked.
I shrugged. “No point now. The party’s still going. Our pack deserves a break. Let’s finish tonight. We’ll talk about our next move tomorrow.”
“Do I need to call Sapphire again?” Warner muttered, already reaching for his phone.
“Yeah. Call her again,” I said. “Tell her everything. We’ll need her. She might know something.”
Warner nodded and stepped away, dialling.
Lia leaned her head lightly against my shoulder, and I wrapped an arm around her waist.
No one said it, but we were all thinking the same thing.
Nothing would be the same after tonight.
How could it?
No matter what danger we were facing before, at least the moon shone down upon us, reminding us that the Goddess was up there. Watching over us. The one who could change everything in a heartbeat.
Every time we lost pack members to sickness, to war, to The Order, we’d thought they would be in a better place.
That the Moon Goddess would hold their hands and guide them to eternal salvation.
But now I realised that they weren’t.
They were all stuck. In the void. happ
The same void I’d still be in if Lia hadn’t pulled me back to the human world.
But everyone else we’d lost in the last seventeen years?
They were still in the dark, with no one to bring them home.
No matter the risk, I owed it to my loyal pack, to the ones who had laid their lives down for me, to send the Moon Goddess back home.
Whether she wanted it or not.
-LIA’S POV-
I turned onto my side for the twenty-seventh time, and the fact that I was keeping count was proof that I really couldn’t get my brain to stop.
It didn’t wanna shut up.
Not about Selene. Or Sarah. Or whoever the hell she was.
Not about whoever was up there right now, watching us, playing games like our lives were mere movies they directed.
Not about Zane. The Hounds. What they must be thinking.
And definitely not about how I couldn’t fall asleep no matter how still I lay for how long.
Zane wasn’t asleep either.
He was pretending.
Even fake snored at one point.
But he was awake.
Maybe he’d forgotten I was a werewolf too now, mixed with something much worse.
I could sense when he was awake. It was in the pattern of his breathing, his heart rate, the way his eyes twitched. I didn’t even have to stare at him to notice.
I didn’t tell him, though.
I didn’t want to confront him, or to have him confront me. wh
My thoughts were all over the place.
And honestly? I was tired.
Of everything.
Iv
I let out a huff when my body started to ache in a weird way.
Zane opened his eyes immediately, glancing at me.
I sat up, taking a deep breath.
