But it didn’t make the wait easier.
After all, who knew how many more years I had with him?
And then-out of nowhere-I heard her.
A girl’s voice. Clear. Gentle.
“The members of The Order are no longer bound by my previous command, the one I gave on the night of the Blood Moon…”
I stiffened. My breath caught.
“You’re free now. Free from the curse, free from my voice…”
I couldn’t move.
“To you, peace will feel like the only thing that had ever mattered.
The silence after felt too deep. Like the whole world had stopped.
But the voice remained fresh in my head.
She said something about forgetting. About letting it stay buried.
But it didn’t work. Not for me.
I sank onto the bed, hands clenched, staring at the place where the voice had come from.
She… was talking to me. To everyone else.
Trying to fix something.
She… was out there.
And I could find her.
She knew now.
She had to.
But would she forgive me?
-LIA’S POV-
Zane gently lifted me up into his arms, carrying me out of the conference room.
I stared up at him, blinking slowly, watching how tightly his jaw was clenched and how his blue eyes glistened with tears.
He was everything I could have ever wanted.
And maybe now, we could finally focus on each other.
Not my powers. Not my suddenly elevated status as a goddess’s daughter. Not The Order or Blake or anything else.
Just us. Just him and I.
He carried me all the way to our bedroom, shutting the door with his foot before taking me to the bed.
He gently placed me down in a sitting position, before kneeling on the ground beside me, taking my hands in his.
“You need to stop, Lia,” he whispered, his tone filled with desperation.
“Stop what?”
“This,” he waved a hand in front of my face, “putting yourself in danger over and over again. You should’ve let them die.”
Zane pulled away, a frown on his face. “What? Really?”
“Yes,” I nodded. “I just want to be with you now, Zane. I don’t want to be a goddess, or a Luna, or even Lia Snow. I just wanna be yours.”
He caressed my cheek with his thumb, staring at me intently.
“Maybe I can make that happen,” he whispered, leaning in and kissing my forehead.
-LIA’S POV-
“Okay,” Zane said, gently pulling away from me and climbing off the bed.
“Where are you going?” I frowned.
“I need to clean you up, love. Your face is covered in blood.”
My heart warmed in my chest, and I didn’t protest as he walked into the washroom.
I stared at the door, waiting, until he returned with a sponge and a small tub of water.
“It’s warm, don’t worry,” he said, bringing it over to me and placing it on the floor.
I started to sit up, but he pushed me back down.
“That’s okay,” he said. “You need rest. I got you.”
I released a soft sigh, staring at him as he pulled his shirt over his head, tossing it aside.
My gaze travelled down his toned chest, and heat rose to my cheeks, making me smile and look away.
Zane chuckled, taking my chin and turning my face to him. “Really?” He raised a brow, blue eyes glinting with mischief. “You’re gonna blush because I took my shirt off?”
I laughed, covering my face. “Don’t tease me,” I muttered, my stomach flipping.
“Goddess,” he whispered, pulling my hands away from my face. He leaned in and kissed my forehead again, then my nose, my cheeks, the corners of my mouth, followed by my chin and finally my lips. I laughed against his mouth, my insides melting.
“I love you,” I murmured, as my fingers tangled into his hair. “I love you so much.”
“I love you more,” he replied, leaning his forehead against mine. “Now quit distracting me, will you? I’m trying to get you cleaned up.”
“I didn’t even say anything,” I pointed out.
“Then just stop being so cute.”
I pouted dramatically, making him chuckle. “You’re just making it worse, love.”
I grinned now. “It’s okay. You can find me cute and still work.”
“But it’s distracting,” he whined. “Every time you act like this, all I can think about is how much I want to kiss every inch of you.”
My cheeks flamed, and I lowered my gaze, feeling a surge of heat crawl through me. “Careful, Zane,” I muttered. “I’m gonna go into heat again.”
“That would be fine. I’d ease you this time. The way you deserve.”
My eyes shot to him, mouth parting in surprise. “Wait, for real? You’re ready?”
“Yes, my love. I’m ready.”
I smiled, watching him as he dipped the sponge into the tub of water, then squeezed the excess out. He gently dabbed it onto my cheek, his touch so light I let out a giggle. “That’s not gonna clean anything, Zane.”
“Just trust the process,” he replied, sitting down on the edge of the bed and repeating his action.
I laughed again, shaking my head at him. “You have to be a bit more firm with it.”
“Shh.”
I shut up now, watching him silently with a grin on my face.
Zane cleaned the blood from my cheeks, then my nose, then my upperlip and then my chin. He then dipped the sponge again, before moving onto my neck.
I sucked in a breath, goosebumps covering my skin as drops of water trickled into my clothes.
Zane’s eyes followed a drop, darkening, then turning completely black.
I swallowed, toes curling under the blanket he’d covered me with.
Zane bit his lip, practically tearing his gaze away, shifting his focus to the tub again.
His jaw was clenched now as he continued to clean me up, until I was sure that every part of me was spotless.
“There,” he said softly, pushing my hair away from my face. “All done.”
