I placed my hand in his, eager for the contact. The small table between us suddenly felt extremely large. I needed to be closer.

“Shit,” Ace said under his breath.

“Shit.” Ace pulled my hand closer, pressing his lips to my skin.

Sparks exploded up my arm and I gasped.

“What?” I asked breathlessly. Whoa, I could hear my heart beating in my ears.

“You’re just really hot,” Ace explained. “You’re getting another fever.” He dropped my hand and threw his napkin on the table. “We need the bill.”

He looked around the restaurant, gritting his teeth when he noticed the waiter walking away from our table.

Another fever? As in the same sort of fever I got when Ace and I were eating dinner with my family? Did that mean that it could only be fixed by him giving me another mind-numbing orgasm?

I squeezed my thighs together at the thought.

“You can tell I’m getting a fever just from holding my hand?” My foot made its way up his pant leg under the table, pulling a low growl from Ace’s chest.

“Yes. I can.” He slid over on his side of the booth to make room for me. “Come here, baby. Come sit by me.”

I stood and sat down next to Ace, getting as close to him as I could. His skin felt like soothing ice, and I sighed in bliss. It was exactly what I needed.

“That’s it, lean on me, Doe; just like that.” Ace kissed the top of my head, keeping his cool lips pressed to my hair as he rubbed my arm up and down, leaving goosebumps in his wake.

“We just need to pay and then we can get out of here, yeah? Hold on just a little longer.” He glared at our waiter who was still across the room.

“Okay.” I snuggled in closer to him, taking in large mouthfuls of his addictive scent.

He smelled extra good, like pine, and rain, and morning dew, and pure, unadulterated masculinity.

“Doesn’t wear cologne, my ass,” I muttered quietly into the fabric of his suit.

Ace laughed. “What was that?” He leaned down to nip at my shoulder playfully.

I shivered. I wished he would bite me even harder.

Huh, what a strange thought.

I rose up onto my knees in the booth and turned to face him. “You lied to me about not wearing cologne. You smell far too good right now not to be wearing anything.”

The sound of his chuckle settled low in my abdomen, making my stomach feel like it was full of lava.

“I didn’t lie to you. I don’t wear—”

He was cut off by me abruptly pressing my nose close to his neck, where his scent was strongest.

“See?” I practically purred. I threw a leg over his so I was straddling his thigh and pushing my breasts against his hard chest and arm. I couldn’t seem to get close enough.

I kissed and nuzzled the pulse of his neck, breathing in more of his delicious scent.

“Right here. You smell best right here. Right where you’re supposed to spray cologne.”

Ace growled and squeezed my sides. His leg shifted beneath me so it was flat against my pulsing clit, nearly causing my eyes to roll back.

“As much as I love this—and trust me, I do love this”—he cursed as I began sucking on his pulse—“I feel compelled to remind you that we’re in public.

“Now might not be the best time to crawl into my lap and kiss your way up my neck, baby.”

His words instantly brought me back to reality. With a gasp, I planted my butt back down in the seat, my cheeks warming so I knew they were blossoming with color.

I made sure to put a few inches of space between Ace and me and scanned the restaurant for anybody who may have just witnessed my inappropriate behavior.

Thankfully, we were in a private corner at the back of the restaurant. I couldn’t even see anyone from our side of the booth, meaning no one else could see us either.

“I-I’m sorry,” I whispered to Ace.

Why did I do that? It was like I completely forgot where I was.

I reached up to cover my flaming face with my hands. “Ugh, I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

Ace hauled me to his side, tucking me under his arm. “Hey, who are you apologizing to? I sure as hell didn’t mind. I just don’t want you to regret anything tomorrow when you’re level-headed again.

“And I never want to hear you insinuate that there’s anything wrong with you ever again. You’re perfect. Absolutely perfect. No more saying things like that, got it?”

My head fell back against the back of the leather booth as I let out a sigh. I was so sick of feeling confused and out of control. I grit my teeth together in an attempt to keep my emotions in check.

To make matters worse, the heat running through my body was only getting worse.

“Can we please just get out of here? I need some fresh air,” I begged. I held out my hand. “Give me my wallet. I’ll put my card on the end of the table so the waiter knows we want to go.”

Ace nodded but didn’t give me my wallet. Instead, he grabbed his full glass of water and put it in front of me. “Drink. I know you’re thirsty.”

Once again, Ace somehow knew what I needed before I did. I practically lunged for the glass of water, noticing for the first time how incredibly parched I was. My tongue felt like sandpaper.

While I chugged down the water as if it were the last drink I would ever get, I watched Ace take out his own wallet and throw two one-hundred-dollar bills on the table.

“What are you doing? I’m paying, remember? This was a birthday present.”

Ace gently pushed me out of the booth. “Don’t worry about it. Being with you is present enough.”

Leave it to Ace to come up with the cheesiest line ever.

“No, seriously, I want to pay. You think I’m going to take you to an expensive restaurant and then make you pay for it?”

“Argue with me all you want. There’s no way I’m letting you pay for our first date.”

After sliding out of the booth, Ace wrapped an arm around my waist and attempted to lead me toward the door.

I dug my heels in. “I’m not leaving this restaurant until you let me pay.”

Ace looked down at me, raising his brow at the challenge. With a devilish smile, he leaned down and kissed me. I melted into it, pleasure racing through my form, a soft moan coming from my chest.

What were we talking about again?

He pulled back. “I’m not afraid to throw you over my shoulder and haul your ass out of here, Doe,” he whispered against my ear. “I just want to get out of here so I can take care of you.”

I wasn’t sure what it was about being in Ace’s car—maybe that we were alone or that I was locked in a small space with him—but once we hit the road, the heat in my body became too intense to ignore.

At the restaurant, it had been a mere thrum. But in the car, it was an all-out, blazing inferno in the pit of my stomach, and quickly alighting the rest of my body.

I couldn’t seem to take in enough air, my chest rising and falling with labored breaths, as sweat beaded over every inch of me.

But as bad as the heat was, it was the incessant ache between my legs that was really driving me mad. It felt…empty. I needed Ace’s touch.

“Ace,” I moaned, shifting in my seat, “something is wrong.”

“I know, baby, I know. Just let me get you home and then I’ll make it all better.”
