“What uh… what were they doing?” I whispered.
“The guy who used a tree branch was alone in the forest. So there is no way to know. But the other man, Sean, he was at home with his wife. He was cooking dinner, and then he randomly slit his throat.”
My eyebrows pulled together.
What?
“Why would he do that?” I asked.
“I was hoping you’d be able to tell me, “Blake said softly.
“How would I know?”
Blake was silent for a moment. Then, as if having mustered his courage, he said, “I heard they were willing to slit their throats for you when you last saw them.”
My blood ran cold.
“What are you accusing me of?” I whispered. “You think I’m doing this?” I snapped, my tone rising.
“No, no, Lia. Of course not. I’m just worried because Caitlyn was a member of The Order too. So I’m only ensuring her safety. If there’s anything going on, anything you know, please, just tell me, alright? I’m worried about her, I can’t lose her.”
I clenched my jaw, my thoughts spiralling.
Why were they dying?
Why were they slitting their throats?
Blake was right.
They had been ready to do that for me.
But I’d chosen mercy..w
I’d chosen to let them live, even though I didn’t want to.
When they asked, I had told them to-
I drew in a sharp breath.
My words…
Oh God.
“Hello?” Blake said. “Lia, you still there?”
I gulped down air.
“Blake,” I said, trying hard to keep my voice steady, but failing. My heart knocked at my ribs, ears beginning to ring. “That guy who was cooking… uh, do you know if he was cooking meat? Or if the guy in the forest was hunting or something?”
“No, I’m not sure. But I can find out. Why?”
“Find out,” I said. “Immediately. And get back to me at once.”
“Okay, you can stay on the line.”
“Okay,” I nodded, blinking back the tears forming in my eyes.
“Abby!”I heard him call.
A few seconds later, there was a girl’s voice. “Yes, Alpha?”
“Did you get the full statement of Sean’s wife? Did she say what he was cooking? What exactly he was doing with the knife?”
“Yes. He was cutting lobster.

My breath caught, stomach twisting into a tight knot.
I ended the call, my eyes wide.
The room started to tilt.
Growing up, my dad loved lobsters.
Sometimes, when he brought them home, they were still a bit alive. Mom would always grumble about having to murder them before cooking.
What if…
No…
A choked sob left my lips, and I stared at my phone as it rang again.
Blake’s name flashed on the screen non-stop.
But I didn’t pick up his call.
I didn’t have the guts to.
What would I say?
That this was my fault?
That in that terrible moment, as I stood over Zane’s dead body, I hadn’t thought my words through?
That I’d caused deaths of two people who had already surrendered to me?
Everything inside me trembled, as hot tears rolled down my cheeks.
“Zane,” I whispered, kicking off the blanket and climbing out of bed. If there was anyone who could help, it was him. He would know what to do. How to stop it. “Zane!” I called louder, rushing out of the room.
-ZANE’S POV-
The conference room was quiet now.
Everyone had said what they needed to. We’d gone over the reports, discussed the situation at the border, the last known movement of the rogue wolves and any new threats rising against us.
After The Order was disbanded, life had returned to normal.
I took a breath and looked around the table. Every chair was full-my wolves, the ones I trusted most. The Hounds sat close together, Aaron and Sheila holding hands under the table. Ajax leaned back with his arms crossed. Warner was focused, like always.
It felt like victory.
Lia and I had finally moved into the pack house together. The rooms were hers now too. Her scent lingered on the sheets, on my shirts, in the hallway. She belonged here-not just in this building, but in this life. And now, I was about to make it official. She would soon take up her responsibilities as Luna of the pack.
My Luna.
She’d be included in pack meetings, she would have a say in every important decision, she would be able to choose who to attack, who to kill, and who to save.
Truth was, I’d mistrusted her once.
Now I would fix it by placing all my faith in her.
I still remembered when she was just another human girl in school-sitting next to Christy, quiet in class, stubborn in the weirdest ways. If anyone had told me back then that she would be the centre of my future, that she’d grow into something almost divine, I’d have laughed. But here we were. She was stronger than any of us. She’d bled for us, pushed herself for us, and stood tall when we all fell. It was time they saw her the way I did.
I opened my mouth to speak-then froze.
A wave of panic slammed into me. Sharp, cold, urgent. My hands clenched the edge of the table.
That wasn’t mine. That wasn’t my fear.
It had to be Lia’s.
The moment I realised it, I heard her shouting desperately. “Zane!”
Without missing a beat, all of us were moving. I shoved the chair back and ran. The Hounds followed without a word, shoes thudding against the floor. I threw the door open just in time for Lia to crash into me.
Her whole body trembled. Her heart raced against my chest, breaths quick and shallow. She looked up at me with wide, terrified eyes.
“Everything’s going wrong,” she choked out. “Blake-he called me. Zane, he said Sean, a member of The Order is dead. Slit his own throat. Same with another. They were both trying to hurt something-Sean had a kitchen knife, he was just trying to kill a lobster, Zane. He was cooking dinner for his wife. And he died.”
I stared at her, brain stalling for a second. “What?”
“It’s me,” she cried. “It’s what I said when The Order attacked, when they killed you. I told them they couldn’t raise a weapon against anything alive. I thought I was stopping them from murder-but it’s worse. It’s like… it’s like a curse. Anyone who tries, just-“
She dragged her hand across her neck.
