Jada felt a glow of excitement. Why hadn’t her father addressed her directly before this?
Esteban continued, “Starting tomorrow, both of you will begin internships at the company.”
Jada felt like she might faint from shock. Susan was also included? She had always been unreliable! What was her father thinking?
Despite her inner turmoil, Jada kept her thoughts to herself. “Alright, Dad,” she said, glancing at Susan. “It looks like we’ll be interning together.”
Susan completely brushed off Jada’s attempt at friendliness.
Jada let out a resigned sigh.
Esteban gave Susan a slightly reproachful look but chose not to comment on her behavior. “Here are some company documents. Please review them tonight and join me at the office tomorrow.”
The two girls took the documents and exited the study. Susan went back to her room and began meticulously going through the papers.
After a while, there was a knock at her door.
“Come in,” Susan called out.
Esteban entered and placed a notebook on her desk. “This was your mother’s notebook. It might be useful to you.”
Susan felt a flutter of nerves as she opened the notebook and saw her mother’s handwriting.
She had few memories of her mother, who had passed away when Susan was just five, yet as she looked at the notebook, tears welled up in her eyes. Fighting back her sobs, she whispered, “Okay.”
Esteban gazed at Susan with a flicker of sorrow. He raised his hand as though to comfort her but then hesitated and pulled it back.
The moment Jada stepped out of the study, Mara was quick to find her. “What did your father say? Was it about you joining the company?” Mara asked, her excitement palpable.
“Yes,” Jada confirmed.
“Just as I thought, Jada, you’re the future of the Riggs family,” Mara couldn’t hide her smile. Even if that woman had won Esteban’s love in her lifetime, her child was still overshadowed by Jada after her death.
Mara was filled with pride, already picturing a future where the Riggs family was completely under their control, with Susan completely sidelined.
“But Dad is also bringing Susan into the company,” Jada added.
Mara’s smile abruptly froze, her face showing clear disbelief. “Susan? What on earth could she possibly contribute to the company?”
Esteban had mentioned this possibility before, but Mara hadn’t taken it seriously since nothing had come of it. With Jada’s return, she was certain they could easily take control of the Riggs Group. She hadn’t anticipated that Esteban would let Susan join the company alongside Jada.
Unlike her shocked mother, Jada stayed calm and offered reassurance. “Mom, don’t worry. Even if Susan joins the company, she’s no threat to me. It could actually work in my favor.”
Mara frowned, still uncertain, but when she saw the confident sparkle in Jada’s eyes, she understood and smiled. “I knew it. My Jada is exceptional. Susan can’t compete with you. She’ll just be a backdrop for your achievements at the company.”
“Exactly. If I were to go alone, my abilities might not be fully appreciated. But with Susan there as a comparison, it will clearly show how capable I truly am,” Jada said with a smile.
“That’s my girl!” Mara looked at her daughter with deep admiration.
Although she was Jada’s mother, there were moments when Mara felt she could never quite measure up to her daughter.
She was incredibly proud of her; Jada was far more capable than Susan, who barely reached a fraction of Jada’s abilities. This realization brought Mara a deep sense of pride and peace.
Meanwhile, once home, Isabella called Susan. “Is Jada your sister?” Isabella asked.
“Yes, she is. Did you find out?” Susan asked, raising an eyebrow in confusion.
“I saw her. It seems she and Andrew grew up together,” Isabella explained.
Susan paused, considering Isabella’s words. “That could be the case. Jada is quite well-connected in Arasport, but I’ve been out of the loop since I moved to Germany early on.”
“Jada can be very manipulative and dangerous, so you should definitely be cautious and keep your distance from her.”
“I understand,” Isabella replied, having already observed that Jada was much more formidable than both Kristine and Courtney. Jada had genuine skills and talents, making her a tough opponent.
However, Isabella didn’t believe Jada was a match for her just yet. “You should also be cautious. She’s clearly set on taking over the Riggs Group.”
Susan was determined. “I’ve made up my mind. I won’t let her have the Riggs Group.”
“Alright. If you need any assistance, just let me know. I’m here to support you,” Isabella said gently.
When Susan heard what Isabella said, she suddenly felt her eyes sting. She had spoken with determination moments ago, but deep inside, she was still worried. She knew she couldn’t match Jada’s connections. Fortunately, Isabella was there to support her. Isabella made her feel she was not alone. She replied, “Okay, Isabella.”
“And don’t think that I am simply helping you. Actually, I will also benefit from this. Once you take over the Riggs Group, we can have more collaborations. So, it’s a mutually beneficial arrangement, right? That is why, whenever you need my help, be sure to let me know,” Isabella said earnestly.
“I understand. Don’t worry. You will always be the first to know if I have problems.” Susan was deeply touched by Isabella’s sincerity. “With you by my side, I will definitely become stronger.”
They talked for a while before hanging up.
Since Edge Entertainment was new and developing steadily, Isabella didn’t need to devote all her time to it. She could now deal with other things, so she began investigating the person who had started the Patton Group with her grandfather. His name was Dalton Smith. Dalton was in his seventies; he had already retired from the company and was enjoying his later years. Since his retirement, he was replaced by Edgar Smith, his second son and the company’s current vice president. In terms of education and capability, it was said that Edgar was impeccable—a typical elite executive.
Isabella continued to dig deeper.
She found that Dalton was genuinely a good person. He had never taken advantage of her grandfather. In fact, after her grandfather passed away, he also left the company and would visit his grave from time to time. Dalton and her grandfather were not blood-related, but they treated each other like brothers. He really didn’t seem like someone who would seize power.
The next day, Isabella woke up early and prepared to go to the company.
While riding in Andrew’s car, she was lost in thought.
“What are you thinking?” Andrew gently asked when he noticed she was absent-minded.
His voice brought Isabella back to her senses. She hesitated to tell Andrew, but when she saw the gentle and trusting look in his eyes, she decided not to keep anything from him. “The fact that Eliza, Aidyn’s daughter, and I switched at birth is accidental!”
“Really?” Andrew was obviously surprised. “Tell me about it.”
“From the very beginning, I suspected Jeffry had kept something from me. It turned out someone had asked him to raise me. But I haven’t found out who this person is. I’m still investigating,” Isabella explained.
“They can’t be from the Patton family. Your aunt and uncle are not that type of people,” Andrew said after quickly analyzing the situation. “So, it must be someone close to the Patton family. And the one most interested in the Patton family is Dalton.”
Andrew’s analysis shocked Isabella, but it was not how quickly he came to the conclusion; it was because of how well he knew the Patton family.
Andrew looked at her widened, round eyes and found her very adorable. He reached out and pinched her cheek. “Prominent families are always well-informed about their connections.” Isabella realized that she was not as well-informed as Andrew.
“But don’t think Dalton is such a person,” Isabella said. “How about Edgar?”
“It’s most likely Edgar,” Andrew said calmly, but there was a hint of certainty in his voice. “Edgar may seem gentle and kind, but he is not as good as he appears.”
“You think so?” Isabella’s eyes narrowed. It seemed she needed to investigate Edgar further.
Andrew reached out and stroked Isabella’s head. “He probably had plans to switch your brothers as well, but he didn’t have the opportunity until it was your turn. In your absence, Kristine smoothly entered the Patton family, making it easier for Edgar to gain control of the Patton Group.”
Isabella couldn’t help but admire Andrew’s reasoning. “Andrew, you are amazing. I am truly impressed.”
“Thank you for the compliment, honey. I am your boyfriend. So, whenever you need me, I am always here.” Andrew held her in his arms, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “So, what’s your next move?”
“I’ll investigate Edgar first.”
“Alright. Don’t worry. I’ve got your back.”
While chatting, the car had already arrived at Isabella’s company.
To Isabella’s surprise, before she even started investigating Edgar, she received the news that he had arrived in Arasport. While she was busy working, Glenn and Elaine suddenly came to her office.
“Dad?” Isabella was surprised to see him there. Wasn’t he supposed to be dealing with matters at the branch office at this time?
“Isabella, are you busy today? You must be tired,” Glenn said, putting the fruits and snacks he brought on the table. “Take a break first.”
Elaine added, “Isabella dear, don’t overwork yourself. You can delegate tasks to your subordinates.”
