“Stop,” I whispered.

The blade turned towards my neck.

My body trembled, panic rising fast in my chest. I tried to drop the knife but my fingers wouldn’t move. I tried to scream for help, but my throat just closed up.

My hand was shaking violently now, dragging the knife higher, closer to my throat.

“N-no-” I choked out.

I used my other hand, tried to grab my wrist and force it down. My muscles strained. I pushed back hard, panting, sweat forming on my forehead.

But it was no use.

A voice echoed in my head.

“You will not raise another weapon against wolves, witches, or anything else that breathes… And if you try, you’ll slit your own throat before the thought finishes forming.”

My eyes widened.

“No. No-please-“

My knees hit the floor.

I fought it with everything I had-the pressure in my arm, the aching in my muscles, the sheer panic pumping through me-but it didn’t matter.

I couldn’t stop it.

I had to do as she had said.

The knife moved forward in one clean swipe.

There was a burning flash-white-hot and wet. Then came the spray.

I barely even felt the blade.

Just warmth gushing down my neck and chest.

A scream tore through the room. Gwen.

She was running, her bare feet skidding on the floor.

“SEAN!”

I collapsed sideways, hitting the ground with a dull thud. My head felt far away. Everything was spinning. My eyes fluttered open just long enough to see her face above me, tear-streaked and pale.

“Stay with me, please, stay with me!”

Her voice was distant now. Everything else was too. The ceiling blurred. My limbs went cold. The kitchen was fading. I felt my pulse in my ears-then not at all.

Darkness swept over everything.

The girl’s word was law.

She was the Moonborn.

The Moon’s Lost Daughter.

And the Bender of Wills.

-LIA’S POV-

“Don’t go,” I whined, wrapping my arms around Zane’s, cuddling closer to him.

He chuckled, placing a soft kiss to my head. “I have to, love. Pack duties. Unfortunately, I cannot stay in bed with you forever.”

“I could command it,” I grumbled. “No one can tell me what to do. I’m a goddess.”

He snorted. “That’s what you’d use your powers for?”

“Maybe,” I mumbled. “Stay here.”

“Lia…” he laughed.

“Fine.” I let go of him, scowling.

“Hey, I’m not gonna go if you look like this.” He tapped a finger on my nose.

“Then don’t,” I grinned.

“You know I have to,” he said gently.

I huffed. “Am I not Luna yet? When will you start including me in these top secret meetings you have? I’m a werewolf too, and I’m a part of your pack too, am I not?”

“Of course you are,” he replied, frowning. “I thought you wouldn’t wanna be involved yet.”

“Why wouldn’t I?” I blinked. “I’d love to, Zane. Anything that’s important to you is important to me. And if I’m Luna, I should know how things work, right? Don’t I have responsibilities?”

He stared at me, and a genuine, warm smile crawled onto his lips. “You do,” he nodded. “And you’ll be great at it all. I’ll speak to the Hounds and the pack today and you can join in from tomorrow.”

“Why not today?” I asked. “Aren’t you like, Alpha?”

“I am,” he nodded, “but there’s still procedures and a way of doing things. I need to make them feel respected. I do that by taking their opinion on most things, and informing them beforehand about others.”

I nodded in understanding. “That makes sense. Okay. Tomorrow works for me.”

“Great.” He pressed another kiss to my forehead, then climbed out of the bed. “I’ll be back before you know it.”

“You better,” I smiled. “I love you Zane.”

“I love you too.”

He left the room, and I released a slow breath, glancing up at the moon.

“What did I do to get him, Mother? Did you just give him to me because you love me and want me to have the best?”

My phone buzzed beside me, making me sit up and search for it under the covers.

When I found it, I froze.

The name flashing on the screen was one I thought I’d never have to see again.

Blake Walker.

My ex mate. le

-BLAKE’S POV-

I’d been staring at the same report about the pack for twenty minutes, and still hadn’t read a single line.

The study was quiet, except for the ticking of the old clock on the wall. My tea had gone cold. Again.

Caitlyn.

Even just her name in my head made something twist in my chest.

It’d been a long time since I brought her here, since I was forced to kidnap her so she’d stay away from Lia and not get herself killed. And somehow, she still looked at me like I was the enemy. Like I was some stranger who didn’t deserve to breathe the same air as her.

Maybe I didn’t. Maybe I was a complete and total piece of shit.

But I was trying.

I was trying to get her to warm up to me.

I had kidnapped her, yes. But I’d only ever been kind to her after. I was never rude. Never raised my voice. I left her alone every time she told me to.

But I couldn’t let her return to her town.

Because knowing her, she’d go straight to Lia and Zane’s pack and try to attack them again.

I couldn’t risk it. She was everything to me now.

A knock at the door pulled me out of my thoughts.

“Yeah?” I called out, looking up from the sheet of paper.

The door opened and Abby stepped in. She looked tense, her eyes slightly wide.
