The conversation reminded me of what I’d seen in the forest.

The man who died by a tree branch.

What if…

“Guys,” I said softly. “That day, I was with Sapphire, and-“

“Ooh,” Ajax wolf-whistled. “Sapphire.”

I shot him a look. “I’m serious here.”

“Sorry,” he grumbled.”

“We were in the forest, just talking, when we heard a loud scream. When we went to check it out, a frightened girl came stumbling out of the bushes. She pointed us in a direction, and we found a dead body there. His throat was slit-against a protruding tree branch. It didn’t… it didn’t seem like murder. More like suicide. And it wasn’t normal, like, it doesn’t make sense. Why would someone use a tree branch to kill themselves? Why not something else? Maybe a knife or a gun. What was so urgent?”

Sheila raised a brow at me. “What are you trying to say?”

I released a slow breath. “I mean… when I saw the guy, I thought he looked familiar. But I couldn’t put my finger on it. But now, I have a feeling he was from The Order.”

Their faces fell now, and they exchanged glances.

“Do you mean…” Aaron trailed off, clearly afraid to finish the sentence.

“I don’t know,” I said softly. “But I think we need to keep an eye on Lia. She might not understand how her power can work. How dangerous it can be. I’m not saying she’s evil. But I do think she has no idea what she’s capable of. What she can accidentally cause if she’s not careful.”

“We should talk to Zane,” Sheila said softly. “He’ll know what to do. Maybe he can speak to her.”

“I don’t know if that’s safe,” Ajax muttered. “What if she gets offended like she did today? We didn’t even say anything and she stormed off after seeing the looks on our faces. Zane even followed her, but she left school and didn’t even tell him.”

“She’s changing,” Sheila said. “That’s dangerous. And now she lives with us.”

“No, that’s good,” Aaron said. “We can keep an eye on her this way.”

“But we have to be careful. She should not get an idea. I don’t think she’ll take it well,” I said.

They all nodded, and then silence engulfed us while our thoughts ran wild.

-UNKNOWN POV-

Ever since The Order was forced to disperse, life had come to a sudden halt.

It had almost been a month, and this whole time, I’d barely left my room.

My wife was devastated by the way I acted.

But how could I not?

How could I act normal after… after what I saw that day?

It was a constant terror to know that she was out there. Someone-something so powerful, so wicked, completely against the rules of nature.

Were there any?

Or everything we’d ever believed in had been wrong?

Werewolves roamed amongst us. Monsters who could look like humans and mix with us, act like us, pretend to be normal like us.

Creatures who could rip us apart with their bare hands if they wanted.

But that much was still believable. It was something I’d been able to digest.

Sure, I’d taken up arms against them.

But I hadn’t spent a month locked up in my room, afraid to step out.

That girl… she was an abomination.

She was… a goddess walking amongst us.

Or maybe a devil.

She’d joined hands with them, after all. Not us. She loved a monster.

With her by their side, they’d become completely untouchable.

Knock. Knock.

My heart jumped in my chest.

I had to take deep breaths before I could answer.

“Yeah?”

“Sean,” my wife called out gently. “Could you come out? I… I don’t feel too well today. I was hoping you could cook.”

I didn’t respond for a few seconds.

I wanted to say no. To make an excuse.

But I couldn’t do that to her. She had been putting up with me for too long already.

Anything more, and she’d ask too many questions I wouldn’t be able to answer.

I slowly stood up, my legs feeling odd as I made my way to the door.

I took another deep breath before finally opening it.

Gwen stood in front of me, wrapped in a shawl. Her eyes were tired. She hadn’t been sleeping either.

I did this to her.

“Thanks,” she still said when I stepped out. “I know you’re going through a lot after losing your job. But it’s all gonna be okay as long as we keep showing up for each other.”

I gave her a tight smile.

She led me to the kitchen and leaned against the wall while I grabbed the apron hanging by the pantry door.

“You just need to cook the lobster. It’s in the freezer,” she said, gesturing lazily toward it. “Don’t worry about anything else. I’ll go lie down for a bit.”

“Alright,” I muttered. I didn’t trust my voice much. It felt too dry.

I tied the apron around my waist and pulled open the freezer. There it was, the plastic container right at the back. I brought it out and placed it on the counter.

As I opened the lid, I paused.

The lobster moved.

Only slightly. But enough.

Its claws twitched slowly, like it was barely holding onto life. I stared at it, my stomach curling.

It should’ve been frozen solid.

What the hell?

I reached for the knife block beside the sink. The blade felt cold in my hand. I hesitated for a second, then turned back to the lobster. If it was still alive, I had to end it quickly.

I lifted the knife.

But just as the thought formed-just as I imagined bringing the knife down-

My hand twitched.

No. It jerked.

I gasped, dropping the lobster in surprise. The knife was still in my grip, but I… I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore. Like I’d suddenly lost my arm.

“Wh-what the hell?” I whispered.

My arm began to move on its own.

It lifted. Slowly. Deliberately.

Mocking.

I looked down at it, wide-eyed.
