Like I’d killed someone.
Their audacity was shocking.
Zane and the Hounds had spent years bullying me. Bullying others. Smashing someone’s face into cake was nothing in comparison. Ajax had once almost set fire to my hair.
And now they were judging me for fighting back against someone who hurt my friend?
It was ridiculous.
My phone buzzed, and I turned on my side, picking it up.
It was Zane.
I cut the call, rolling my eyes.
I didn’t want to talk to him.
Out of everyone, he was the one who should have understood mysituation. Without needing an explanation.
I turned away from him. ab
“I can’t stay away, Li-” he stopped short, making me frown.
I turned my head to glance at him.
He was frowning down at his feet.
“What?” I asked.
His body jerked forward, making me flinch, but his feet didn’t move.
He met my gaze again, his eyes wide. “I’m unable to move, Lia,” he whispered. “You told me to stay away, so I’m not able to come. closer. It’s like my feet are rooted to the floor.
My eyes widened now, all my anger dissolving into worry.
“What? Sorry. You can move,” I said, turning to him fully.
He tried again, but his feet remained glued to the spot.
“I’m not able to,” he whispered, his heart starting to race a little. “Lia, I’m afraid you’ve frozen me to the spot forever.”
My stomach twisted.
-LIA’S POV-
“No,” I said, immediately hurrying up to him, jumping off the bed to stand beside him. “Zane, move,” I said, but he didn’t glance at me, nor did he listen.
“I can’t, Lia,” he said, staring down at his feet. He tried to move, but failed once again.
My heart started to pound in my chest, my throat going dry.
“What-what do I do?” I whispered. “Zane, how can I help?”
“I can’t feel my feet. Maybe if you touch me everywhere, the tingles will help bring back feeling to my skin,” he suggested.
“Okay,” I nodded, immediately cupping his face. I slowly lowered my hands to his neck, then removed them and slipped them under his shirt.
Zane drew in a sharp breath as I caressed his chest, then went straight down to his legs.
I crouched down, pushing up the hem of the legs of his pants.
I rubbed his skin gently before moving down to his feet.
“Your shoes,” I said, undoing his laces.
He raised his foot up and helped me remove one shoe, and then the next..
I traced my fingers over his toes, then froze.
My eyes narrowed.
I glanced up at him.
He was barely containing his laughter.
“You jerk!” I snapped, slapping his thigh and getting up.
Zane burst out laughing, wrapping his arms around my waist and lifting me up.
“I’m sorry,” he said, still shaking with his loud amusement.
“Let go of me,” I gritted out, slapping his chest.
Zane smirked. “Yes, Goddess.” He stepped forward and dropped me on the bed, before climbing on top of me.
“Zane-“
“Shh.” He pressed his hand over my mouth. “Quiet. Beautiful girls like you look best when they’re silent.”
My eyes narrowed further, but I felt the tiniest flutter in my stomach.
Stupid. Idiot. Traitorous body.
“Just kidding. I love your voice,” he whispered, removing his hand. I opened my mouth to yell out his name, followed by a string of curses, but he quickly cut in, “You can scream my name if you want.”
I froze, frowning.
Zane chuckled, leaning in and pressing a kiss to my lips.
Now everything melted inside me.
I groaned softly as he pulled away.
“I’m sorry, Lia,” he said softly, brushing my hair away from my face. “I should have trusted you. And I shouldn’t have judged you. You were right to be mad. I promise, it won’t happen ever again. I will always give you benefit of doubt, and I won’t jump to conclusions in my head without speaking to you about it.”
My face finally softened, the anger melting away like it never existed at all.
“You promise?” I said softly.
“I promise.” He planted a kiss onto my nose.
The corners of my mouth curled into a smile I couldn’t hold back.
Zane grinned down at me, his blue eyes boring into mine. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” I replied, wrapping my arms around him. “Also, don’t ever do what you did just now. About your feet being stuck.”
Zane snorted. “No promises. The look on your face was priceless.”
I smiled, glaring at him. “You’re an idiot.”
“Only yours.”
-WARNER’S POV-
“I can’t believe she did that,” Aaron said once we alone behind the school.
“That isn’t like her,” Sheila added.
“Rhonda deserved it,” said Ajax. “I hate her.”
“It’s not about what Rhonda deserved,” I said. “It’s about Lia misusing her powers. It’s about her almost exposing herself in a cafeteria full of students with cameras. She’s making the same mistake again.”
Lia had exposed us to The Order once.
Each of us had paid the price for it.
I’d almost died. Sheila almost died.
Zane too. Her own mate.
And yet, she did something reckless again.
“It was just cake,” Ajax said softly. “We’ve done much worse.”
“Do you not get it?” Aaron clicked his tongue. “She commanded Rhonda. And Rhonda listened. Now she’s gonna talk about it to her friends. Tell them that she didn’t do it on purpose. She felt controlled. As if someone were pulling her threads like a puppet. You think they’re not gonna start questioning anything? Everyone in this town heard about the sudden Blood Moon. The strange happenings. If Lia isn’t stopped, she’s gonna keep pulling stunts like this and get us all killed by terrified humans. They can’t find out we exist. Or that anything supernatural exists.”
