“Are you at the hospital right now?”

“Yes, I just grabbed some breakfast,” Susan replied. Isabella wished her well and ended the call.

Susan had been in high spirits lately; her grandfather was doing well, and she and Dane were back together. Things were looking up.

Yet, as Susan turned a corner, she bumped into someone, causing her breakfast to tumble to the floor.

At first, she thought the person was just careless and checked to see if they were burned, but then she recognized the face that always made her uneasy.

“Susan, I finally found you,” Josie said, her expression grim.

Josie had faced some challenges in Anspart recently. Her deal with the Riggs Group had fallen through, and her attempts to approach Dane had been rebuffed. After days of feeling downcast, she finally tracked Susan down.

“Josie? You just ruined my breakfast,” Susan said, her face devoid of emotion.

Looking at the noodles scattered on the floor, Josie scoffed. “Is this disgusting meal your breakfast? You’re as poor as ever! How did Dane even fall for someone like you? Is he into plain girls now?”

Indeed, Josie couldn’t figure out why Dane had fallen for Susan.

Susan remained expressionless. “No matter what kind of girls Dane likes, he will never like you. Also, you owe me for my breakfast.”

Josie pulled out a bill and threw it on the floor. “Here, one hundred. Is that enough? Pick it up yourself!” The bill fell into the soup, becoming soaked—a blatant insult.

Susan clenched her fists and said, “Josie Reed!”

“What? Are you upset? Susan, how dare you pursue Dane and then snap at me?” Josie taunted, her tone overtly aggressive.

Bystanders in the corridor began to pause and gather, drawn to the escalating scene.

“Since you’ve chosen to interfere in our relationship, you should expect to be rebuked!” Josie yelled.

People generally relished drama, particularly gossip of this nature. When they overheard the well-dressed woman accusing the plainly dressed Susan of being the other woman, they started to look down on Susan.

People naturally dislike those who interfere in others’ relationships. This woman appeared so pure and innocent; they were shocked to see her implicated in such actions. This stirred a sense of morality among the onlookers.

“You’re still young. Can’t you earn your own living? Why resort to such behavior?”

“Don’t be lenient with the other woman. A firm hand will set her straight!”

“It’s disgusting. I hate women who seem innocent but act shamefully behind closed doors. So disgusting!”

Everyone glared at Susan with contempt, some even spitting in her direction.

Susan recoiled and stared at Josie in disbelief. She couldn’t believe Josie would stoop to spreading such slander!

Her expression chilled, and she said, “Josie, don’t go too far. Dane has never cared for you! Why accuse me of being the other woman? Even if you’re envious, you shouldn’t stoop so low! What will Dane think when he finds out?”

Josie momentarily felt uneasy from Susan’s words but quickly regained her composure and retorted, “Susan, in the end, family will choose me, not you. Doesn’t that make you the other woman right now?”

At that, Susan nearly laughed. “Alright. I’ll call him here, and we’ll see if I’m the other woman.”

Susan pulled out her phone to make the call. Josie’s expression shifted subtly as she quickly grabbed Susan’s hand. “Susan, be realistic. You and Dane are not a good match. Do you really want everyone to think Dane has poor taste for choosing you? People in his circle will mock you for it!”

At that, Susan hesitated, her heart pangs of uncertainty. She didn’t want to cause any issues for Dane.

She understood that wealthy families often aligned themselves with power, and her status could negatively impact Dane.

Seeing that Susan hesitated, Josie quickly said, “You know you’re not right for Dane, don’t you? Just leave. Don’t cause trouble. Dane will marry me eventually. Do you understand?”

The onlookers slowly started to grasp the situation. Josie’s jewelry hinted at her wealth, marking her as someone from a well-off background.

In contrast, Susan looked plain but had a stunning face. “There are no fairytales these days. Young lady, don’t meddle in the affairs of the rich people.”

“That’s right. The rich and the common live in completely different worlds. How could you ever think of marrying into wealth?”

The crowd seemed to agree that Susan was being overly ambitious.

Josie smiled triumphantly. “Susan, everyone here is making sense, don’t you see? Even if you are together, it wouldn’t lead to happiness.”

“Really? My daughter doesn’t deserve to be with Dane,” a deep voice came from behind.

It belonged to someone who sounded like an experienced businessman, carrying an air of authority.

Josie turned and was shocked to see Esteban. “Mr. Riggs, why are you here?” Suddenly, Josie’s demeanor shifted dramatically. With a sycophantic smile, she asked, “Mr. Riggs, are you here for medical treatment?”

Susan was also surprised to see Esteban but quickly disregarded him.

Seeing Susan’s detached response, Esteban felt a pang in his heart and coldly asked, “Miss Reed, do you think Lily’s daughter is inferior to you?”

“How could I possibly think that? Your daughter is remarkable. It’s clear to everyone!” Josie felt a bit confused as to why Esteban would ask her that question.

Jada was indeed exceptional; even Josie, who lived outside of Ansport, was aware of her status as the city’s most renowned socialite.

“Is that so? Then why did you just say that?” Esteban moved toward Susan, and in that moment, Josie noticed subtle similarities in their appearances.

Her mind went blank, leaving her at a loss for words.

Esteban regarded Josie with a cold expression. “Moreover, Dane never said he was interested in you, yet here you are, warning another woman to leave him. Are you out of touch with reality?”

Esteban rarely resorted to insults, but when he did, he was sharp and direct. His authoritative demeanor left no doubt that he was a man of significant stature. Having heard Josie address him as “Mr. Riggs,” most of those present quickly recognized him as Esteban, the head of Riggs Group.

So, was this unassuming young woman actually his daughter?

Had the young ladies of wealthy families become so low-key these days?

Was Josie out of her mind? How could she fail to recognize Esteban’s daughter?

Josie looked at Susan. “You’re Mr. Riggs’s daughter? How is that possible? Isn’t Jada his daughter?”

Esteban’s frown deepened. “Susan is my firstborn.”

Josie turned pale, almost collapsing to her knees. Esteban’s eyes caught sight of the bill on the floor. “Did you throw this?”

“Mr. Riggs, I—“

“Pick it up,” Esteban ordered sharply.

Josie shuddered as she instinctively crouched to retrieve the bill, now limp and soggy from the spilled soup. This was the most humiliating thing she had ever done, and she felt utterly miserable at that moment.

“Since you ruined the breakfast, go buy another one,” Esteban commanded.

Josie could only mutter, “Okay.”

She clenched her teeth, shot a glance at Susan, and departed.

The onlookers were stunned by the dramatic turn of events. They grew nervous, fearing Susan might hold a grudge for their earlier remarks. Despite the Riggs family’s legitimate business ties, they were well-connected in less savory circles.

“Wow, Miss Riggs is incredibly unassuming. We didn’t recognize her at all. That woman must be out of her mind, claiming Miss Riggs isn’t good enough for the man she likes. Who isn’t good enough for Miss Riggs?”

“Absolutely. She’s just envious. How absurd she was! I think Miss Riggs surpasses her in every way.”

The crowd began complimenting Susan, hoping to avoid any bad blood. Susan chose not to engage further and headed to Erick’s hospital room.

Esteban followed her inside.

Upon seeing Esteban, Erick wasn’t in the mood for much conversation. Esteban set down the gifts and greeted him, “Erick, how are you?”

“Still here,” Erick responded nonchalantly.
